Personally, I prefer just one space after a sentence. It seems anal to want a pair of spaces. But that's just me.

I'm with you on this one, SDog. But I fear we may be showing our age

I know there are two spaces after a period because that's what my typing teacher taught us back in middle school

EDIT: This is an addition to my post.     I want to see if something works.

what is wrong with just one space? It saves you on characters used if you are writing a particularly long post.

Being the language Nazi that I am, I get very upset when people do not use proper punctuation. Two spaces folks
.

When people use only one I get the impression they are trying to speak quickly..

Is this language related?  I never heard about it here in Portugal, but I never had any typing classes (although I use all my fingers when typing).

Yes, it did.  Although I ended up with 5 spaces instead of 2.  Hopefully this will work better

Edit: cause it didn't
Edit again, cause I really want to share but this is probably not technically an "ATS Issue":

The Chicago Manual of Style folk have spoken: they feel the extra space is unwarranted and a holdover from typesetting. Not all agree:

One Space or Two?

Q. About two spaces after a period. As a U.S. Marine, I know that what’s right is right and you are wrong. I declare it once and for all aesthetically more appealing to have two spaces after a period. If you refuse to alter your bullheadedness, I will petition the commandant to allow me to take one Marine detail to conquer your organization and impose my rule. Thou shalt place two spaces after a period. Period. Semper Fidelis.

A. As a U.S. Marine, you’re probably an expert at something, but I’m afraid it’s not this. Status quo.

When you want two spaces just use one of each.

If you want three or more use one of the normal type and for the rest use the "secret" one.

Not officially language related, but as far as the "proper" way to type up documents and what not.

It is generally accepted that the practice of putting two spaces at the end of a sentence is a carryover from the days of typewriters with monospaced typefaces. Two spaces, it was believed, made it easier to see where one sentence ended and the next began. Most typeset text, both before and after the typewriter, used a single space.

So that's a kind of valid reason, but here's the rebutal:

Today, with the prevalence of proportionally spaced fonts, some believe that the practice is no longer necessary and even detrimental to the appearance of text.

With monospaced typefaces every character takes up the same amount of space on the page. M uses the same amount of space as i. With proportionally spaced fonts, the characters take up an amount of space relative to their actual width - the i needs less space than the M. (as illustrated by the graphic in the sidebar)

And we all learnsomething today
.

Isn't this what the spacebar is for?

And the enter key?

Well...guess not. I put 4 spaces before and after the word spacebar.
Enter key worked for spacing paragraphs.

Off to do do something I know I can do....
