That is actually a very interesting theory. Excommunicating a group and disavowing them would be a very good cover story if you were secretly conspiring.

I am not sure how I could respond without offending my brothers and other ATSers who are Catholic, except to say that if I found out we were secretly serving the Pope I would turn in my apron today.

I apologize if that offends any Catholics. The Catholic ministries of healthcare and charity are probably unsurpassed by any group in the world. I also believe the overwhelming number of modern Catholics are good people.

However, I would not serve the Pope (or Satan, or Lucifer) in any capacity.

Again, I am not speaking for masonry. Maybe some other brothers could shed light on their beliefs, but for me - no way!

I will also admit that I will 'promot', defend and protect Freemasony from outrageous lies, innuendos, half-truths and the ilk and I make no apology for doing so. Having first-hand experience of Masonry, I know when certain people are speaking out their sphincter and I make no apology for pointing such things out (however embarrassing for the sphincter-speaker they may be).

Oddly enough, M&D has yet to be introduced to me, even though I'm well into the officer line in my Lodge. Guess they're waiting until I'm about to be Master to spring it on me. I don't even know where to start. Exaggeration, or hyperbole, is a literary device and predates freemasonry I would assume. Although I guess assumptions are what got you to where you are... so perhaps I should avoid making them.

Couldn't say for sure as I'm not especially inclined to be following links posted by Achilles judging from his posting manner. If you ask my stepdaughter when she and I've been bickering, she might say she thinks I come off that way. But aside from those rare occasions, I think it's safe to say I blend in nicely with the rest of human kind.

Yeah, that last quote is where you went totally wrong. Quoting a site that appears to be about tax evasion on Freemasonry may not be the best matching of source to topic.

It was a requirement at one time that to join the Shrine, a man had to have completed either the York Rite or the Scottish Rite (32nd Degree). However, not all Scottish Rite 32nd (or even 33rd) degree masons are Shriners. The requirement has since been dropped and you need only be a Master Mason to become a Shriner.

The Scottish Rite has nothing to do with the Shrine. The Shrine has nothing to do with the Scottish Rite. They have separate officers, separate meetings, and different purposes.

Honestly, it isn't that hard to figure out.

Freemasonry has at it's base and heart the Blue Lodge where everything starts. Everyone man who wishes to go elsewhere in the system has to be a Master Mason in good standing with a Lodge. Then you may, if you wish, join the York Rite and end up wearing a nifty plumed hat as a Templar or the Scottish Rite and end up with a nifty flat hat, or a Shriner and end up with a nifty fez. The hats, however, are entirely optional and do not make a man any more or less of a Mason. The core of the organization lies in the Blue Lodge and the sublime degree of Master Mason is the highest and most important degree given.

Just wait until the conspiracy types find out about "Cryptic Masonry." Can you imagine what they will make of that??!
