Osama bin Laden has threatened the European Union with grave punishment over "insulting drawings" of the Prophet Muhammad as the Muslim world marked the prophet's birthday.

He says in an audio internet posting that the "wise men" of the European Union had gone "overboard in your unbelief and freed yourselves of the etiquettes of dispute and fighting and went to the extent of publishing these insulting drawings. This is the greatest misfortune and the most dangerous".

Claims that OBL was murdered have been frequently discussed and debated on Al Jazeera news over the past couple of years, and in many other fora. Benazir Bhitto bought the mythology and repeated it not only here but in other interviews, particularly on Pakistani TV.

Problem is, no-one has any proof and there is no body, so the plain truth is that no-one knows. Saying you KNOW OBL is dead is like saying you KNOW Adolf Hitler is alive and well and living in Peru, when in fact you don't. It's important to separate what you know (i.e. you have a body in front of you, dental records that match, positive ID from a number of genetic indicators) and what you just BELIEVE or THINK YOU KNOW. There is a big difference.

Fact of the matter is, no-one knows if OBL is alive or dead. He is not old - it was/would have been his 51st birthday on 10 March, so he's still quite young in terms of normal human lifespan. He is known to have suffered a chronic kidney disease, possibly pyelo-nephritis, some years ago. He may be living quietly in semi-retirement, somewhere in northern Pakistan near the border with Afghanistan. There are thousands of tribal villages there and the remit of the Islamabad government does not in practice rule there. It's bandit country. He could easily live there quietly for 30 years with no public profile, and no-one outside would know.

So please, before posting with such confidence that 'OBL is dead' - let's have some proof. Without proof, the question remains open and the rest is just speculation with no value.

Saddam had WMD .. had up to year to get rid of it and had help from Russia and China in doing just that. China provided the 12 Locomotives and Russian Spetsnaz loaded them up using an exit stratagy that was in place long beforehand. The Locomotives took all the WMD materials to Jordan.

OBL is likely dead, with his ego, hasn't shown his face (or the latest) of him in years. He aged 30 years in one month during Tora Bora etc. There have been no major attacks on US soil since 2001 (or abroad for that matter) by Al Qaeda. They have been broken up and are very fragmented. Their core strength now is in Iraq with about 6000 members there getting trained by Iran. There were 10,000 a short while ago (4000 were taken out by US forces over the last couple major operations).

Some of OBL's followers air this crap using old tapes of him. The voiced used can't be confirmed either way, which pretty-much means it isn't OBL. He would show his face, always did before, but hasn't for years. This should tell you he is either dead or decided being Allah's right-hand man wasn't for him afterall.

I thought his name is Osama, not Usama.

No one here has disputed that Saddam never at some point in time have WMDs. Surely no one in this thread has. The point I, and everyone else, is making is that Saddam didn't have WMDs at the time of the Invasion.

Let me repeat it, so you're clear on what exactly we're saying: Saddam didn't have WMDs in 2003. He didn't pose a threat to the US at that time, nor was he linked, helping, funding or harboring Al-Qaida. None of the arguments this Bush administration made for going to war with Iraq in 2003 are true.

The UN is a joke. Saddam broke over 20 UN resolutions and trimmed millions of dollars off the Oil for Food program. He'd claim the US was killing 'thousands' of Iraqi children, when in effect, he shaving every extra dime off the program for years. Of course Clinton did nothing, the Inspectors were kicked out and Saddam was having a good time.

He was giving Russia and China Oil for weapons. Saddam killed more of his people then anyone, 5000 Kurds for some 'ethnic cleansing'.

He just gave the big boy on the block (US) the exuse he was looking for. It was a matter of time, and Saddam played the game very foolishly. Russia and China used him too ..they told him to let the US walk right in to Iraq and then set up and do Guerrilla warfare tactics to drag it out for years, thus trying to deplete US resources. China and Russia study all past US wars , to find out what the US is worst fighting against.

China came up with something (or subscribed to) something called Asymmetric Warfare. Defeating a superior high tech miliitary using smaller forces and Guerrillla warfare tactics.

China built Iraq's air defense network (called Tiger Song) using US fiber optics technology given to them by the Clinton administration. Before the bombing campeign, US sent the Tiger Song computer network a Virus, thus rendering much of it useless. China has since directed focus to Information Warfare tactics aimed at paralyzing US computer systems.

China doesn't have any Oil reserves so is moving in on Africa and securing relationships with Iran.

The Vatican on Thursday rejected an audiotaped accusation from Osama bin Laden that Pope Benedict XVI was leading a “new Crusade” against Muslims, but Italian security officials were concerned about the threats included in Mr. bin Laden’s new message.

“These accusations are absolutely unfounded,” the Rev. Federico Lombardi, the pope’s chief spokesman, said in a telephone interview. “There is nothing new in this, and it doesn’t have any particular significance for us.”

Osama, or Usama, is a Roman-alphabet rendition of an Arabic name. It's written in Arabic one way with no variation (it's his name, on the birth certificate) but Arabic names when transcribed into Roman script come out in various spellings according to which letter combination the translator thinks best reflects the Arabic sound.

There is unfortunately no standard convention of inter-script transcription with Arabic-Roman, or Farsi-Roman alphabets - unlike Pinyin, which is now a formalised and agreed method of transcribing Chinese script into the Roman alphabet which standardizes spellings.

So the bottom line is that names in Arabic can be transcribed in any way you like as long as the result approximates to the original Arabic pronunciation. Osama, Ossama, Osamma, Usama, Usamma, Oosama, and even Yussamma would all be acceptable, and the variation would not end with these examples.

Actually, the Bush/Cheney policies have led to the deaths of more Iraqis than Saddam could have ever imagined in his wildest wet dreams.

And due to the same policies of greed and conquest, they've also killed and maimed more American citizens in Iraq than were casualties as a result of the events that took place on Black Tuesday.

OBL is as much a stooge of the PTB as Bush and Cheney. Period.

Al Qaeda #2 says attack US, Israel

Al-Qaida deputy leader Ayman al-Zawahri is calling on Muslims to strike Israeli and American interests to avenge Israel's recent offensive in the Gaza Strip, according to a new audiotape.

In the 4-minute tape, posted on a Web site Monday, al-Zawahri accuses Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak of helping Israel in its offensive by sealing off the border between Egypt and Gaza.

He calls on Muslims to "strike the interests of the Jews, the Americans, and all of those who participated in the attack on the Muslims," and says attacks should not be limited to areas in Israel or the Palestinian territories.

The authenticity of the tape could not be independently verified but the voice sounded like al-Zawahri's on previous tapes confirmed to have come from him. The tape also was posted on an Islamic militant Web site commonly used by al-Qaida.

Unconfirmed reports from Pakistani and U.S. intelligence sources indicate a CIA airstrike was carried out against a compound in Pakistan which contained Ayman al-Zawahiri, al Qaeda's number two in command, and four other unnamed senior al Qaeda leaders. Eighteen people are believed to have been killed in the strike.
