Here too. Food prices are through the roof! Definitely going to garden this spring/summer. To hell with the grocers. For now, the farmer's market, IMO, is definitely the way to go.

The Farmer's Market is going to go through the roof as well. As an example, the fertilizer we purchased last year has DOUBLED in price for the coming planting season. Doubled. For most small farmers this simply does not work. We will not be using fertilizer on some of our fields this year for the first time in decades. Somebody's making money but it won't be the consumers or the small family farmers.

Peace.

Kill our means of survival so we accept theirs.

I know people with small gardens in pots in their basements and in their sparerooms,closets,etc...
Veggies and a few fruits are uber easy to grow whether in or out. You just need to provide appropriate light and water.
The problem is weve got too the point where only a few provide for the masses
and todays society has been weened on this kinda thinking.
Following the Depression my GrandMothers very AVG sized garden( around 250 yards squared) provided not only enough for winter use for her entire family(all 18 of them) but also enough too help other less fortunates that My family knew. As easy as my tomatoes and cucumbers and Peppers grow I dont ever for see a problem providing for my immediate family those veggie goods.
Also canning of said produce is a lost art that can be the difference between eating and starving in the event of a Mass Food shortage.

Good find just further shows you how our economic problems are much bigger than is being played off by the main stream media. I find this disturbing but I am taking precautions. This weekend I sold my 07 BMW 750LI for a 08 Toyota Yaris. Im getting crap from all my friends but it is cheap as hell and it gets 39 MPG. Ill be laughing at everyone when gas goes up to $4.50 a gallon. I also have been stocking up on food both canned and food in the deep freeze. I think things are going to turn terrible this year.

This has been a long time in the making. We are reaching a point of critical mass. Thanks to the OP for finding this.

For some backround into food problems in the US, please visit "Let Them Eat Cake!" The thread has plenty of flags and stars, but could always use more. More importantly it gives some deep backround to substantiate the article here. People really need to be more aware of this stuff.

Damn... you guys are really going through the rough and tumble :S

Yeah, I live in London, but come from Denmark and so far the food here is pretty well subsidised... for now :|

So you have you grocery prices going up, your money going down, and while this is going on you have a Bilderberg Demo running a nasty smear campaign and a president who can't stop thinkig about war.
Sounds like the states are aiming for a place in the 3rd world any time soon

Best of luck to ya... don't know what else to say.

Food prices here in the UK have increased a little, but not that much. I'd wager that price increases in the US are partly due to the dollar tanking south, thus increasing the costs of importing produce, be it food supplies or other materials.

I'd also question what people have said about subsidised food here in the UK. Our farmers receive very little subsidies and the big supermarkets certainly don't get any subsidies. 60% of our food is produced in the UK and that is continuing to grow as more people "Buy British" (big trend at the moment)

French farmers get paid alot though from the EU to continue being lazy and not growing anything.

Not really. Our mean household incomes have pretty much kept up with things. The doom and gloomers are failing to mention that.

I live in Anchorage, Alaska and food has been going up, but slowly and at a similar rate to income increases. To hear some people here tell it, you would think we are suffering and running around in 30 year old pickup trucks and eating cat food
Average families are living in the largest and newest homes in our history. Restaurants are doing an incredible business as people eat out more and more.

As someone else mentioned the UN is concerned about other parts of the world that don't grow their own food for whatever reason. We have been hearing about China's imminent starvation for a couple of decades now and Mexico will always be poor as long as their Government is the laughing stock of the world. Next time your in Mexico; go to a real Mexican town instead of the Tourist Traps and you will see what a mess Mexico is.

All that is happening in the US is that we are seeing food prices similar to that of other countries instead of the extremely low prices we are accustomed too.

As far as the UN; they are constantly using fear to try and dip deeper into Americans pockets to bail out Countries incapable of properly governing themselves. That report (if its even real considering the sources) is to put pressure on us to give the UN more money to line their crooked leaders pockets while they pretend to help people. The UN is just a hang out for the worlds Good Ole Boys to sit around and shoot the bull. They don't actually do anything or have any power to do anything.

The citizens of the world who are having real issues have my sympathy. It is up to them to change things however. China won't be right until its people decide they have had enough and take over their own country. Until they do, things like food shortages and the like are going to be constantly happening. Modern farming methods are capable of feeding twice this world population if the Governments would just allow it.

Hunger has always been the preferred method of controlling citizens for countries like China. China wants its people hungry and so do the leaders of many other countries. If food were sent it would never reach those in need. It never does.

Food is still not an issue for a household with an average income here in the US. It is probably really similar to costs in the UK. It is being greatly exaggerated in this thread which is about an article not even about the US.

It is housing costs and utility bills that are causing difficulty for low income workers here. Even so those that can qualify for housing assistance pay as little as $25 a month for rent. Contrary to the popular exaggerations, we take good care of our working poor. People who don't mind using the system can feed themselves for free, between food stamps, food banks and the like. Even our homeless are fat and happy.

I'm constantly offering entry level jobs to homeless people who hang out near my office. After 7 years here not one of them will walk through the door.

I ran a help wanted ad for two weeks. I got 8 responses. Four people showed up to apply. I hired all four. Two showed up and by the second day they stopped coming to work. I could hire four people today but nobody wants a job who does not have one.

We are not suffering in the US. Just a bunch of election year propaganda and baloney by people who get off on scaring people.

Guy I dont know what world your living in but it was costing me near $100 a pop to fill up my beamer. A gallon of milk is over $5.00 this affects me and I make a lot of money. If it doesnt affect you then you must be making the huge bucks. Like I said earlier I just sold my beamer for a yaris and my wifes Yukon Denali for a Toyota Highlander because gas is getting sick down here in florida along with everything else.

You in Alaska who pays a premium for everything to say your not affected is either false or you make way to much money.

Food prices, fuel prices, hell just the cost of been able to go to work and keep a roof over your head prices.

The prices will rise and when our (elected) leaders say they know what is best for us then the people will fall while our (elected) leaders live in their three homes and eat cake, and still say we are living better than ever.

Ever watched a hamster on its wheel and wondered why, we do exactly the same except our wheel is everything we buy to survive, we are running to stand still.

No , is not the prices here in the south has reached very high increases and is not over time but in one shot, as another member already posted here in GA is becoming very hard to find what you need without going over the budget.

This is going to get worst, like I said a while back in another thread, the high prices on gas and the deceiving stimulus package is going to send prices over the roof by the summer.

The obvious answer is that part of society needs to be eliminated. I recommend that the diplomats and the wealthy go first.

Time to plant that Victory Garden ...

... or move to South America.

Of course, all of the foundations in the US could be broken -- foundations such as the Rockefeller Foundation, the Ford Foundation etc., and then distribute those moneys to every man woman and child in the USA and that works out to about $90,000. USD per person...

Well food prices here have risen greatly in the past 6 months, Bread was $1.75 a loaf now $2.88 a loaf. Hamburger was $2.88lb now $3.80lb.
Milk is now $5.32 a gallon and can goods have increased as soup was .82 a can is now $1.17 a can.

A food shortage would really cause havoc in the USA and thye food riots would begin and tyhen Martial Law would go into effect..

Better start stashing what you can afford to buy now.

Umm...how many jobs have people gotton from poor people?

Yeah, using your logic, we would REALLY be in a world of hurt because you are saying lets get rid of the wealthy, who are the only people who hire and keep me employed.

Its not as bad as most here are making it out to be. The biggest problem is the price of oil and government regulation. The government is strangling business with all the useless regulation and taxes. Get rid of regulation and taxes, then you will see things improve a lot. Unfortunately, judging by some here on ATS, it will not improve anytime soon because most here will vote for Hillary or Obama and they are socialists who want more taxes and bigger government with more regulation. Sad, just sad.

Another problem is the stupid idea of using our food as an alternate energy supply. Who came up with this lame idea? Didn't they realize that would increase costs for food?

That would be the same wealthy elites who, as you note, keep you employed. Must be nice to the masters who plan to reduce the earth's population come hell AND high water... and did I mention hell?

They don't just want to ration the food of the middle class. They want the middle class dead.

Do you just make up stuff and hope its true? Why would the wealthy elites as you call them want to change? The people who came up with the idea of using our food supply for alternative energy is not the wealth but radical environmentalists who have nothing better to do with their life.

Yeah the elites have really picked up the ball over the past 15 years and ran with it.

First off I am a believer in Regan's trickle down theory. But here's the problem. The big boys got the tax breaks they were looking for and what did they do with them? They didn't pay people more money because disposable income with inflation added into it has gone no where in 15 years.

Oh they hired a lot of people yes unemployment is low. We have also shipped a ton of jobs over seas and brought in all sorts of illegal slave labor.

So overall what happens when the price of everything goes up except for wages? Well we get our current situation and frankly this started to happen in 2001 but was staved off by the housing boom because people were using their houses as their bank accounts. Well now that house titty is not an option and people dont have saving accounts so what are they left with? Not their high wages.

Without George W. Bush getting on the Ethanol/biofuel bandwagon we would not have had the enormous transformation in the destination of crops in North America. His endorsement alone of a particular kind of biofuel tipped the scale toward turning your food crops into fuel.
