I was wondering how it would effect people to know or to have it confirmed that extraterrestrials do exist. Ive thought about it and can honestly not think of any way this would affect me personally except for maybe in an inquisitive way.

Imagine that you woke up one day and you saw on the news that the government confirmed that we are and have been visited by beings from another planet. How would this change the way you live? why?

I cant see it changing my life at all.
If I was a lot younger the possibility of interplanetary trevl would excite me but at 58, I'd just ask if they could sort out my V8 !

In my opinion depends if they created us humans or if we are also a unique life form...

I don't think it would change how I am, what I do...of course there are reasons for this but I won't go into them
I mean, I would be happy the world finally acknowledges it, but all in all, unless a major intervention was staged by them (ETs), then It would be back to the usual.

unless there was also a change in how the ET's interacted with us then i don't think this would affect my daily life.

I might set up a souviner booth so when the ETs came they could have a nice selection of gifts to take home to relatives.

Think of the possibilities.

That is one of the most brilliant replies I have seen on ATS in days

It's hard to say how I think it would affect me.

I think there would be fear by the majority of people. I can't say if I would be affraid, I think cautious is a better word to describe me.

I also think that at the time of the announcement by the government what other events are going on, is this announcement of the aliens a cover of something bigger?

If it wasn't a government announcement and "they" just showed up one day, then of course a lot of us would think it's the government trying to trick us, but why?

Really a hard question to answer.

I would want to go with them out in space and possibly never set foot here again if I had the choice. I am serious. Even though I think there are some hostile races out there, I would take the risk. It would be so worth it for me.

I dont think I would be afraid. Im much more worried about what our governments are doing and what is in peoples hearts on this planet. From my perspective, its only a matter of time before the US government attacks someone. Its like living on a planet with a rabid, uncontrollable dog, just waiting for him to hurt someone.

I totally agree with you Copernicus, I would go too! That "Alien Homeworld" has got to be better than this place!!! Maybe it's a place without war, and hatred!

I think it will be a monumental event, that will greatly effect my life, along with everyone else in the world, that's my opinion. I think life as we know it will change, once we challenge the very infrastructure of our current belief system.

Here is something I would like to hear even more. How did your life change when you verified that aliens exist? Lets not forget that we have fellow members here that have been in contact with these beings. What changed after your experience?

edit* I would totally want to go also. I would gladly give up my current life in order to participate in something like this. That is an extremly selfish statement I am afraid, but hey. And yes, I also hope they are not retarded...like us.

Good answers everybody! I just don't think it would affect everyday life to the extent that society would shut down. It would be an important event but I think aside from a little religious confusion and speculation on the news everyone would go about their life as usual. This post is mostly my curiosity about how the human race can adapt. I feel that we can adapt to pretty much anything given the situation was not hostile.

I'm not really sure which way disclosure would have the liter impact.
Be it the Government telling us or a UFO landing on the capitol lawn. I do know which ever way we find out we would adapt and life would go on.

I would say "Finally, it's been proven to be true"

Then I'll find anyone who has ever called me crazy, psycho or paranoid and laugh in thier faces.

All the while I'd still remain catious of the aliens though

My question: would it instill hostility upon Earth's religious people? Make them become zealots who would rather harm the ET's than make peace or whatever it is that might happen?

I would sit there with a smug grin on my face and think of how dumb humanity really is. Because lets face it judging on current events we are dumb.

The government would never reveal the truth about "Them"!!! Because the government has no spine, they are cowards!

I'm hoping they'll reveal themselves to us on their own terms, I'm sure they will...when they're ready!!!

Honestly, I am willing to bet there will be people more then happy to fight the Aliens if they come. That is sad, but there is no reason to think that some wouldn't. I think the biggest concern regarding this knowledge could be with the religious communities. However, I think it is pretty easy to fit aliens in with most current belief systems, if you simply say, "god(or whoever) invented the aliens too" works kinda well.

Well for one, a persons belief system would be shakin to it's core. There's a lot of people who don't believe and the set in thier ways. People would have to rethink everything that we currently hold close to us. Religion would get turned on it's ear with the implications of this shocking truth.

Governments would panic( if they weren't in on it already) and i assume that they would want to prepare themselves in case there was a battle. The world would no longer be everybody vs. everybody. There would have to be some kind of unity. Just not the NWO type of unity.

I believe this to be true already. Look at how many species are on this planet right now. It would be ridiculous to think the is nothing out there among the billions of stars.

I mean, think about it

Seems to me you're asking two questions or people are giving two answers.

Knowing that there exists sentient beings, with whom we might be able to communicate, living on another planet in our galaxy would be somewhat thrilling, and I think it's likely.

On the other hand, knowing that there were actually aliens here on Earth, now, would fill me with fear and dread.

But the reason would be fear of their infectivity, not of the aliens, themselves.

Though I presume they'd take some kind of precautions, I think it's nearly impossible to guard against accidental contamination with an alien plague were extraterrestrial beings actually to come to Earth in a physical form.

Such a plague would be likely to be so different than anything our immune systems had seen that it would be immediately devastating to all humans, I fear.

In fact, this is one way I know that we don't have any aliens here now, and we probably didn't in the recent past - the lack of any evidence alien virus or microorganisms. IOW, we're still here.

(Of course it's possible that we have had such a thing before recorded history, hard to say).

Yep, in my opinion, H.G.Wells had it right.

Perhaps, in the distant future we will make a visit to other civilizations, but to be safe, we'll do it in a virtual or holographic form. (it would also save gas.
)
