Shut up is quite alright. I don't see why the big girl's blouse has to get all defensive and bitchy over it...

Oh, wow, I've been insulted in Cockney Rhyming Slang.

Why are we upset? Let's see ... could it be because there is an awful lot of hypocrisy flying about? And people who are supposedly Christians showing a distinct lack of Christian behavior?

The thread title is fine. It got a debate going. Now that people don't like where the debate has gone, said people are starting to call names. How very mature.

BTW, wildcat, we made our peace, so I'm not on about the title of your thread anymore, when I refer to "shut up" it's the attitude of the poster above me to which I'm referring, which your thread title named most aptly.

oh c'mon you know damn well the point I was making.

It is one thing to debate an issue...but what is with the superior intellectual viewpoint? Like... Athiests are intelligent and all of those others who believe in God or something silly like that are unintelligent?

pfft

That's not it at all. Baseless assumptions and accusations get you nowhere and don't make your point any more valid.

Most of us respect others' right to religion and have no problem with people believing in these things.

The problem comes when others tell us to shut up and stop debating people's faiths when they brought it on themselves to bring their faith on to a DISCUSSION forum in the first place!

hmmm now you own 'the big girls blouse comment?'

It is a comment we use over here in Australia often...and it is not considered insulting.

It wasn't directed at you. It was directed to those who are getting soooo personally insulted by being told to shut up.

now everyone is so sensitive???

umbelievable!

Why do you say we have a superior intellectual viewpoint?

Is rationality superior? I didn't make that distinction, you did.

What is it about a rational atheist discussing faith that makes the other side of the issue go rabid, call names, and make accusations about militancy and bullying?

Yeah, I know. I had the misfortune to be married to a particularly horrid Aussie. And so I know that particular phrase is a very nasty insult. But since it doesn't apply to me, being a woman already, calling me a girly man doesn't really make any difference.

I'm one of those who is insulted by being told to shut up. Personally. In fact, I was the first reply poster on the thread.

And this is getting off-topic, ad hominem arguments are not valid in debate.

Shall we get back to the topic, which as I understood it, was "atheists should be seen and not heard" or something to that effect?

MM You are actually talking to NJE777. I changed my username sometime ago. Big Girls Blouse is not insulting overhere at all so if you want to go on with the big insult then fine by me.

Look at the sensitivity here! Oh how offensive!

Well, obviously different wave length here, cos I don't find it at all offensive. So, my reaction is based on my surprise at the shut up reaction and if everyone is being oooo boo hoo over shut up... I think its all very big girly blouse stuff!

They are not my words thanks.
Something to that effect?

I said... athiests generally consider themselves to be of a higher intellect than those of faith and I have read many threads whereby the person who believes in God or the other silly stuff is treated as though they are ignorant.

Exactly, believing in god is silly... Couldn't have said it better myself.

now shut up!

thanks for illustrating my point!!

----------------------------------

Here is an example MM of what I am referring to. Just as you were insulted regarding shut up. As one with a faith, I am insulted when you refer to my faith as being nothing more than a belief in a sky fairy.

www.belowtopsecret.com...

Now, the author of that thread invites athiests to respond to questions so it is, imo open slather.

I don't call or refer to your beliefs anything other than athiesm. I use no metaphor to undermine it. I respect your beliefs. I don't chastise it in anyway.

I hope I have clarified the point I originally made.

I'd sooner turn to some other religion than turn to Christ (or Muhammad for that matter.)

Not like we cared at all about what you'd do. You do what you must. It's a free world. You have at whatever your heart desires - it's your right. Hell you can pray to Colonel Saunders for all i care

Good luck to you.

Why do the atheists here feel the need to gatecrash a discussion of faith with insults?
I don't see too many spiritual people on ATS forcing others to believe what they believe.

That's because atheists don't seem to have peace in their hearts so they are still trying to figure this all out. They bash Christians so that they can get answers to possibly help them to believe. just MHO.

Until they are at peace with themselves they cannot just let others be with their religions. Again just MHO.

Buy again, there are also Jesus fanatics that also have it all twisted. But, hey, it takes all sorts to fill the world. It is about time we learned to live together as humanity not as atheists or Christians or anything else.

...and how can I force anyone to believe anything? If that were true, the whole board would be atheists by now.

Stating our opinions is not insulting. The only insult is people telling others to shut up instead of either hearing them out and moving on, or ignoring them.

1st off - I don't think you could force all the Christians to become atheist even if you were the devil incarnate. If the Devil exists then so does God. (ok that's a different topic)

MajorMalfunction - below is NOT aimed at you - I have seen you with a lot more class on the worst occasions! So...
With regard to ignoring peoples posts, I have seen some atheists, writing in this thread, that basically hit a thread with a one liner post to the tune of "BS..." and then off they go. Why do they bother? Is it total stupidity or ignorance or just hate or do they feel compelled to leave proof of a lack of intelligence?

Anyways. I believe debate is healthy.

Now here's an idea - why don't a devout Christian and an atheist counterpart kick off a debate in the debate forum and each debate the opposing position.

its has to do with something called freedom of speech ann you can use it as much as the atheists can.

I don't know if you notice it but I have read most of your posts and you actually add nothing. Is that kind of how you are (??) - you like one of those people at a party that talk a lot but say nothing just to hear their own voices.

I'm sorry but thats the most ridiculous post i have come across for ages.
Why dont you ask the admin to dump the whole 'Faith, Spirituality & Theology' forum then nobody has to bother discussing anything.
And if you seriously think "the big bad atheists" are the worst offenders on this forum i will go and find you at least half a dozen threads of the top of my head that take pot shots at atheists by 'believers'.

Give me a break, this thread is just an obvious attempt at trying to garner a response and score some points and flags, well done it seems to be working, you sucked me in.

Classic.

I am a believer but i have to agree with you on the above. It is from both sides. And as long as that forum remains it will be a battle ground LOL

But again, perhaps it just needs to be padded with many more rules
but again it's counter productive. So what do we do... "sigh"
