Lol O.k well and truly busted...Well done Chorlton i commend you on your good work.

My whole point in this thread was that as I had spent an awfull lot of time in the Far East, they let these things off all the time, birthdays, weddings engagements anything!, and Ive seen them do some weird erratic things.
Go up, down, sideways and shoot off in weird directions.

I found out that the reason some shot off at tangents was that many of them are home made, some with ricepaper. If ricepaper gets wet is can get soggy and when the lamp is lit a hole will appear, making the hotter air shoot through it acting like a mini jet.
Also some have lamp supports that are not central, you light the candle or flame, and up goes the lantern, it start burning a hole through and like the others this acts as a little jet and makes it zoom off before it finally bursts into flame.
Its also possible for these lanterns to have small holes in them so when they go up they go off in a different direction then when a smll draft hits them, that along with the small jet of heat comeing through the hole will make them zap away.
Its a weird world

I have heard all the stuff about lanterns, but I simply don't get it. If you see them flying, they DON'T look like UFO's , they have a bloody great flame on them, they look like something flying and burning.
Check out the video here to see what I mean

Also, reports of them moving quickly away are BS too, you can't fly the things in anything other than still conditions (believe me I tried at a festival a few weeks ago)

I am the journalist who originally wrote the story on the Stratford UFOs a couple of years ago, the summer of 2006 I think. I met the man who recorded the footage, and the story went all over the world. It still seems to be popping up as if it's new.

You may be interested to know that in the weeks that followed I get some interesting phone calls claiming they could explain the lights as simply "Chinese lanterns". I was never convinced. Do lanterns hover at such great heights? Do they speed off in a straight line? The lights continued to appear over the town for months. Whilst some of my less curious minded colleague accepted the lantern explanation, I never did.

Over the past few weeks there have been more and more sightings over Stratford and I'm planning another story. Unlike many reporters, I try to take these subjects and treat them seriously. I'm very keen to speak to anyone who can help with the story. Please get in touch:

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I saw the lights too. That's probably why I have little time for the Chinese lantern theory. If I see a bird I know it's a bird, not an aircraft. Same goes for Chinese lanturns, if I see them, I know them. These were not them.
