Seems like the USGS is sticking with the 4.7 magnitude figure. Of course different orgs might be using slightly different scales -- there are several of them use.

Kent police is reporting a 5.4

Channel Tunnel is fine. It was in center of the quake, but its fine and service is unaffected

more and more incidents are now being reported from the quake. COBRA meeting will probably take place soon.

Hi,

I live and I am in Folkestone at the moment, right inside the area which has been sealed off. There is a helicopter flying over head and there are police and fire engines everywhere.

The electric has just come back on and the telephones are working again. I have a few new cracks in my walls, but nothing too bad. I have been told that houses in Canterbury road have fallen down and there has been a gas exposition down there.

At first I though that the Channel Tunnel had been blown up, then I thought it could have been a dirty bomb, then I though that the nearby Nuclear Power Station had exploded, thank good nothing like that had happened!

Looks to me like the main concern may be possible damage to gas mains. Although not a strong quake, it appears to have been very shallow which would have increased the impact and damage.

We've had stronger quakes in the UK (assuming latest estimates are correct) cause virtually no damage at all in the past.

there are about four different sources saying different things.

Britsh - 4.3

US - 4.7

Europe - 5.0

Kent Police - 5.4

[edit]

Historically, this has been a hotspot for big quakes in the UK.

Bugger. I woke up at six am, then again at 10:30. I didn't feel a thing in Essex, near southend, but then I am on a big boat. Would that affect things. I thought quake vibrations travelled easier through water.

They are saying the epicentre was in the Dover Straits, about 12 miles offshore, on News24.
