That's good...actually a 5 probably could do a lot of damage there since I imagine the homes are not built to withstand earthquakes.

Homes have been evacuated in Folkstone, we've been told not to leave our homes.

The police are just walking around outside our home to make sure we are okay

One of the biggest quakes we've had in the UK - unusual, though not unprecedented. Nowt felt here in the Midlands though - last quake we had was the Dudley one a few years back.

Sounds like Folkestone area has sustained damage but no conformed reports as yet.

this apparently comes about once every 50 years according to Skynews.

but its strange to get THAT size of a quake in the UK, I know we do have ancient fault lines throughout the UK.

strongest Earthquake in the UK was in 1930 and it was 6.7. Up in the North Sea

I think Loch Ness in Scotland is a failed rift valley.

There are ancient fault lines here too and we could get a big one someday. There was like a magnitude 2 here in NYC a few years ago, but I couldn't feel it.

For some reason I thought that the UK was an earthquake free zone, though my geology is on the sketchy side..

we are like in the middle of the plates, or something liket that.

But the UK has lots of ancient fault lines throughout the Country, many run through the South East.

Yes, we do get quite a few minor tremors in the UK, usually from very old fault lines.

Some good info on UK quakes here:

www.moorlandschool.co.uk...

There was a documentary on TV a few years back (sometimes repeated on Discovery or Nat Geo) about the possibility of a major earthquake affecting London one day. It is possible.

infinite,

Are you scared or ok?

Do you think you may have a larger one?

Good old Skynews attacking the police,

to be fair, we are not use to this sort of incident and i don't think the police can be blamed.

any news from COBRA? the government might call an State of Emergency in Kent due to the damage areas. Seach and rescue team is out.

Kent emergency agencies are reporting numerous incident from Canterbury (where I live) to Ashford and to Folkestone. Numerous buildings have collapsed.

(red dot is the Kent quake)

The quake was believed to happen in the English Channel, South East of Dover.

Aftershocks are expected to occur, but will be smaller to the main quake.

size is still being debated, the British geeks are saying 4.3 - 4.7...but the US and Europeans are putting it at 5.0 - 5.4

Seems like the USGS is sticking with the 4.7 magnitude figure. Of course different orgs might be using slightly different scales -- there are several of them use.
