I used to believe in god until a friend of mine stated something that made me understand it a lot easier. The greeks had gods for everything, back then they believed it. Now, everyone now believes them as myths. What if one day in the future there is a new god and people laugh at us about believing in a "myth". So I think whomever thought of the god that we refer to as now just took all of the greek gods and threw it into one person and therfore god was created. So simpler I think that god is a spin-off from greek gods.

in response to your silly trap, time doesnt exist either.time is how man documents growth and erosion.since the beginning of time would refer the beginning of documentation.virtually all earlier civilisations slept on dirt too, probably ate it at times,it doesnt mean it is smart. for backing up my claim about religions being created for power seeking priests.just look around, what do you see.the very wealthy and powerful lieing to your face on sunday and every other day.screwing your children and taking your money.only the weak stupid or masochistic would worship.
powerful people dont beleive in god unless they got that power easily and didnt have to think for it.thinking people arent believers in things that dont exist.they are normal, religious people are not normal.they are gullible, comfortable being stupid and afraid.

God was not and has not been created. He is forever and infinite. Infinity is not something human beings can handle (for lack of a better word) We cannot picture REAL infinity, God IS infinity. He was not created, has no master, and is master of all things. 'nuff said?

EDIT: Ashley - First: Welcome to ATS!
Second - I agree with your time statement. Time was invented by man, and it is not natural, imagine a world without time? Would it be chaos??

what are you talking about?god is infinity.you mean god goes on forever, sure as long as you want him to.you created him.he goes back as long as you want him to also.you created him.what do you mean humans cant handle infinity, humans created time i think we can understand it.at least some of us can.but then again you sound like a religious person so you most likely cant .remember they are not to good at free thinking.

Well a rational explaintion,
Hes the father we have never had and always want in our hearts.
He gives us faith, hope inspiration.
When we feel like a miracle has occured, we coincide the fact that someone must be watching over us.

i know god doesnt exist so this is just for fun,but have you ever thought that all the bad things happen because of god and 'miracles'would happen more often if he wasnt getting in the way.

I feel that God whatever that is would want us to question everything and in that I agree with Bandit.

How could someone invent god?

Recognize, describe or understand God is a lot better suggestion than 'inventing god.'

What is so interesting is the ease with which some identify with this concept and the great difficulty it poses for others. That is a better question in my mind, why the diverging views? Why is there an orientation between people that prevents agreement on such major issues?

There are those that believe in god, those that do not and then those that believe that god is not the god we were raised to believe in. Three diverging views. What is most interesting is the certainty of the atheist while there are two groups that definitely believe in a god but not the same one. That makes two to one that believe (not actually percentages mind you but logically speaking).

I still maintain that god was created by men. As ashley and a few others have mentioned, ancient cultures had a god for everything. The modern cultures are monotheistic, one god does everything. I still maintain that god was created to explain what human reason and science couldn't.

Yeah, but you left out the group of people (agnostics) who either honestly dont give a #, or believe that its a stupid venture to surmise on the nature of god.

...and by the way........why is everyone referring to this 'god' character as 'he'? Isnt that a human characteristic.
(in other words.....we did create "him")

maybe in the future some change in society rules will lead to women being presidents, priests, food gatherers whatever and unfortunately i doubt that ill be around then but ill bet well be talking about god as a her.does it really matter its just god and you can make that problem go away if you want.you made it.
you know i relly dont care what color or sex your invisible leader is.

A little boy walks up to his father and asks him a question.)

Boy: Dad, is God a man or a woman?

Father: Both, son, both.

(After a short while the boy comes back.)

Boy: Dad, is God black or white?

Father: (After thinking for a short while) Both, son, both.

(After another wait, the boy comes back again)

Boy: Dad, is Michael Jackson God?

I am insane?

What makes you think that?

What is real?

What exists if you cannot know of it?

Let me rephrase this: If I do not have a telescope then do the galaxies not exist? I cannot see them, thus they are not real FOR ME!

so you would say they do not exist then?

but they do, do they not?

If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it did it really fall?

YOU should think harder about these things because they are SERIOUS topics and you do not want to paint yourself into a corner.

Nothing exists outside The All. The All is One. Kind of
like what TheBandit795 said.

The Supreme Infinite Consciousness has always existed.
There's no explaining it.

Yes religions were created to control people. But that's
not say that there aren't many underlying principles to
be learned from them, that directly apply to YOU and ALL.

To those who deny the existence of
"God", The Most
High, The One, The All, Allah, whatever you want to call
the Supreme Consciousness; you deny what is inside
of you and in front of you.

I am reminded of a traveling 'exhibition' that toured college campuses in the late eighties under the guise of 'Philosophical Debate' but was actually brought in under the Sociology Department for empirical research by graduate students.

Two extremeist "nuts" took to the quad to debate which was the 'correct' opinion: God/Jesus/Fundamental Christian interpretation versus Religion Conspiracy/"Opiate" mind control. (To make the point that they were nuts, topics like appropriate hair length to get into heaven were discussed.)

But Sociology majors quietly interviewed the gathering crowds and observed and recorded the shift of the mass reaction from their own extremes to MODERATION. The debate from extremes actually moved people AS A GROUP either right or left depending on where they started, to eventually come closer together, indeed to nearly identical opinions.

Fascinating stuff in manipulation. Moral: Just be careful what debates you allow yourself dragged into. All is rarely what it appears. And motives more hidden than upfront.

We did of course!
Out of a need for security and some answers to explain
the randomness of existence with all it's tragedies or sorrows.
When the crops fail and famine occurs or when a pestilence
breaks out there are some who want to think that there was
some divine purpose to it.
Usually as a punishment for some transgression.

Rather than simply accept it as a natural occurence that happens everywhere and to anyone regardless of how
good or bad they think they are.
Even the birds and animals get sick and die.
Disasters like floods and forest fires kill lots of them.
Does that mean some god is punishing them for their sins
also?

But of course the beasts don't have the higher level of consciousness that we humans have.
They also don't have the pathetic puerile reasoning that
tends to see the workings of divine providence in ordinary
and sometimes disastrous natural phenomena.
We humans of course have that and we come up with such
nonsense as fate or destiny, as an independent entity in
relation to human actions.

We would rather imagine that there is some undiscernable
purpose to our banal existence and that we are apart of some vast cosmic drama being directed by an almighty deity.
Otherwise the alternative is to simply accept the fact
that we are just a fortunate and unfortunate accident.
We are merely a temporary part of the ever changing
scenery and no more special than the countless organisms
that have come and went eons before we arrived on the
scene.

Maybe a little more intelligent and creative than the trilobites and the pterodactyls but nothing more.

It's interesting that the God concept hasn't always been one of Good.

The earliest known civilization of Sumeria, from which many of the biblical stories draw their origin, had one convienently left out.

That man was created as a slave race to serve those that came from heaven.

the moon and sun appear as the EXACT same size observed from earth. such a simple testament to conscious design. perfect beauty and syncronization. observe nature, witness the enigmatic, complex beauty of creation.
why does everyone lump religion and god together? the nature of 'god'(if it exists) is unknowable by puny man. puny man can not disprove god. i laugh and god laughs with me.
