Geez, what a mess this thread is.
Aleister Crowley was a member of a clandestine Freemason Lodge. When he found out about his lodge's illegitimacy, he left it.
He only made it to Adeptus Minor in the Golden Dawn. He wanted to be initiated into higher degrees, but his request was refused.
During a time of chaos in the Golden Dawn, he tried to take lead of a group of initiates, but he never led a united Golden Dawn.
He also caused a huge schism in the Golden Dawn by publishing the Adeptus Minor grade materials and lower grades as well.
He was a charlatan and a fool.
At least the public has a nice big brush to paint the public opinion of all occultists with, thanks to his high degree of publicity and over the top
behavior.
