ok, here are the following bands that have been nominated so far. For the record I am only listing bands that either:

a) Were specifically stated by the poster to being the heaviest band that they have heard, or

b) was the first band listed in the post i.e. :

So her they are:

I was just thinking of Nile. I love them!

I'd have to give heaviest metal band to...
THE BERZERKER.

Typical gore-grind actually, inhumanly fast drummer (which I suspect is digital), deep growls and high screeches. Every song is like you're in a different world of complete awesomeness. AND THEY'RE AUSSIES.

They are sooo good.

Edit//

Out of the above bands, I'd say Cannibal Corpse is the heaviest.

My vote would probably have to go to Meshuggah because of their low guitar tuning.

What's the classification of heaviest? So many decibels your ears ring for a week? So driven you don't feel your ribs break and your jawbone crack while bashing and trashing in the mosh? So much energy you forgot you drank a dozen hefe wiesens, stage dove into the security pit and woke up with a red tint to your vision on top of a stretcher?

Perhaps it's just a matter of memories and mood?

I would say Metallica is my choice for heaviest in my life, where I was rather insane and pissed while baking away in the Kuwaiti desert during Operation Desert Shield/Storm. Metallica was raw power and good therapy then.

The shortest straw was pulled for me...

This is the heaviest ever!

Faith No More - Jizzlobber

The only heavy bands i've seen on this thread (in order) are: Nile, The Bezerker, Napalm Death and Cannibal Corpse... That's about it. All the rest like Metallica and Black Sabbath are legends no doubt, but their stuff is far from heavy and it sounds sarcastic when people say it is.

The heaviest band ever in my opinion is Vomitorial Corpulence. The lyrics are so extreme they will make you cry...

They are a Christian Goregrind band from Austrailia.

I'm familiar with V.C., pretty good actually. Christian gore grind, now that's a sub-genre of a sub-genre of a sub-genre! If you like them, you'll probably also like

I believe that D.D is supposed to be second, or tied first with V.C. For heaviest band in the world. D.D does sound a bit more messed up though but still heavy as hell.

I have to try to revive this thread because it is the only one that I started that went any where....

METAL HEADS UNITE: who is the HEAVIEST metal band?

my girlfriend says: Nile, Mushuggah, Morbid Angel, and Old Bloodduster.

But of course she isn't on ATS, so it doesn't count

Besides, I need more opinions before I go through the trouble of re-tallying the vote!

Motorhead has always been a favourite of mine.

And yes I like Venom, At war with satan is a classic!

Mercyful fate/King Diamond

Megadeth

And also a bunch of others mentioned here I like too, you folks have good taste in music!

It's a toss up for me. I say motorhead for the music and Pantera for the vocals...but I can only go for one so I say motorhead.

I'm sorry but as far as many of these bands, I refuse to identify a lot of these unidentifiable guitar chords and cookie monster vocals as music. That is why I would much rather vote for legends like Motorhead because they can be heavy w/out resorting to the things I mentioned above.

3rd = MotorHead!
4th= Pantera

Ok what I would like to do is see who ATS thinks is the "Heaviest Metal Band Ever" by way of vote. There are many attributions that qualify a band for being heavy, be it tone, speed, vocal style, etc. which should all be taken in to consideration when pondering this question.

Only one I can think of that fit all the criteria is Motorhead:

70's ROCK

Whoops, seems like I already said this months ago.

Checked out Meshugah, not bad, I wouldn't change the radio channel BUT you can still have metal AND melody, vocals, speed and power ALL AT THE SAME TIME:

I actually put this one on the tapes for the music for our wedding reception(1989). Got danced too and no one had ever heard Motorhead at a wedding before.

Haha Motorhead at a wedding! That is Awesome!

My buddy just got married and he put an Opeth track on his CD. Unfortunately it was "Harvest", a very good song, but not there most "metal" per se.
