But there's a thread on BTS started by some guy who is convinced that Earth is actually concave, and we are all living on the "inside" of the shell. It's all based on literal and fairly ignorant interpretations of some passages in the Bible.

I don't feel like looking (yes, I'm THAT lazy at the moment), but it's titled "Why isn't there glass in the atmosphere" or something along those lines.

apc, is that the same person on BTS who was going on and on about how there is glass in the sky and all I remember reading that way back when and gettig a really good laugh from it, and have a feeling it was written to do so.

Yup. And I'm fairly certain they were quite serious in their beliefs. They danced around and subverted questions too much to be a hoaxer. If it was for a laugh I would have expected some even more rediculous statements, in my opinion.

The good old bible. Just how may years has it set back logical and informed thinking? Imagine where we could be without centuries of organised ignorance.

In the middle ages there was the theory that every orbit was just the planet rolling about on a massive glass marble ie the moon rolls on the outside of the earths glass sphere wich rolls on the outside of the suns etc. Yet even the earliest thinkers realised that this didnt correlate with knowledge of comets and meteorites!

haha, to deal with the round shapes our plannet's shadow creates, think of the earth not being square, but being a coin.

And the largest group of flat earth believers I've heard of was in Arkansas.

And while I do love laughing at certain ignorant christians, I do laugh at ignorant athiests.

Prime example, while not laughable: My uncle married the daughter of an athiest who thought that marriage was Christian, and that sex with your daughter or sister was just a religous taboo, there was no other reason to not do it, so he raped his daughers, with the conviction that he did no wrong.

My point? Stupid people happen, and there's not often much you can do about it.

Not flat earth at all. I'm amazed people still think the world is flat.

One thing I would like to know is how the moon stays in constant orbit? Now the answer is probably extremely easy to answer, BUT.. with the Earth being far bigger than the Moon, why doesn't the Moon get pulled closer to Earth? i presume it has something to do with both gravitational forces holding it in place.. if anyone can elaborate?

The moon is constantly being pulled towards the earth and is always accelerating towards earth but never gets any closer. This is a hard concept to grasp but is scientificaly sound.

If I understand the concept correctly, it is the precision of the moon's speed and rate of fall that keeps it in orbit.

The "Flat Earth Society" states the following as one of the reasons the earth must be flat:

The earth cannot revolve around the sun because it's moving through ether and it would have to force its way through this ether for billions of years.

Correct me if im wrong but that particular usage for the term "ether" has long since been discarded ever since we found out that light was an electromagnetic wave and could travel through a vacuum not a wave with the same nature as a sound wave. They're supporting their theory with 200 year old physics.

I don't listen to those FlatEarthers anymore since I've found out they were the puppets of the Little peoples(gnomes,faeries,leprechauns). Bugs Bunny is in fact a spokesman for their ET allies, the Grays. Their mortal enemies are the Reptilians especially the Snakes. Hence, the phrase, "What up, Doc?" We've been caught in an eons old conflict between these 2 warring factions. The Little People have secretly kidnapped Elvis, too.

I would expect people from a third country to believe the world is round.. Those Flat Earth theorist smoke to much of that bad weed

I always thought the moon was moving its orbit away from the earth, I did watch on a Discovery channel the other night that since the lunar landing there was a mirror array left there for a laser beam to fire at, and this beam from earth does so on a constant basis, during this period the time for the beam to bounce back had got longer every year, thus the moon is getting further away.

If true makes you wonder what will happen in time to the oceans and the weather patterns

The moon's orbit (~240,000 mile radius) is increasing at about 1.5 inches per year. Big Deal. This means that it'll move further out ~1 mile in about 100,000 years or so from now. So don't hold your breath.

I really doubt anyone in this day and age really thinks that the earth is flat what with the satellite images and all.

The only people that I think would think that its still flat are ether extremely paranoid conspiracy theorists who think that the governments of the world are photoshopping the satellite images or some extremely religious person who believes their Bible/Holy Book word for word.

Oh yeah, and theres the fact that its possible to sail around the world.
