The Islamist militia are advancing towards the warlords' last stronghold, Jowhar...

Scotsman: Somali Islamist militia advances

9 Jun 2006

Days after winning control of Mogadishu, an Islamist militia advanced on Friday towards the last stronghold of secular warlords, Jowhar.

"Our forces have moved towards the warlord forces," said Siyad Mohamed, one of the leaders of the Islamic militia. Jowhar warlords, reinforced by defeated allies, pushed southwards from the town on Thursday to the village of Qalimoy. "The (warlord) coalition took their remaining weapons and militia from the town to strengthen their defence in Qalimoy after word came that the Islamic courts were advancing towards Jowhar," said Abdi Warsame, a farmer.

The think-tank Power and Interest News Report said Washington faced a dilemma on whom to support. "At this stage, it appears Washington is unsure of how to proceed in this conflict, stuck between whether to provide further support to the largely discredited warlords or to open up a dialogue with the Islamic militias," it said in a brief.

The Islamist militia demands that the the warlords surrender. The Islamists say they are there for peace, they said they don't like war and they have now given the warlords a chance to "correct themselves"...

BakuTODAY.net: Somali Islamists demand surrender of holdout warlords

10/06/2006

Islamists holding most of the lawless Somali capital demanded the speedy surrender of holdout members of a battered US-backed warlord alliance as the two sides girded for new fighting. But the warlords immediately rejected the call and reinforced positions in Mogadishu's bullet-scarred north while bolstering defenses at their last remaining stronghold in the town of Jowhar, anticipating an attack.

The chairman of Mogadishu's Joint Islamic Courts, Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, said a resumption of four months of the deadliest clashes the capital has seen in 15 years was imminent if the warlords did not give up. "We are here for peace and we don't like war," he told reporters at the courts' headquarters in southern Mogadishu. "If the warlords don't surrender, everybody knows what will happen, but we are not advocating violence." "We are giving them time to correct themselves," Ahmed said, adding that the courts had sent traditional clan elders to negotiate a "peaceful surrender."

All set soon for a new fight. Weapon deliveries are coming in by air and by sea on a daily basis. Everybody is re-arming and getting ready for some more war. Those with stocks in weapons trafficking can now celebrate and cash in lots of $ $ $

BBC: UN fears new conflict in Somalia

18 June 2006

Daily arms shipments are arriving in Somalia in violation of a United Nations arms embargo, a senior UN official has told the BBC. Bruno Schiemsky, co-ordinator of the UN Monitoring Group, said the flow of arms had risen substantially since Islamists went on the offensive this month. He warned it was only a matter of time before the Union of Islamic Courts clashed with interim government forces.

[---]

Mr Schiemsky describes a growing build-up of arms inside Somalia with deliveries coming in by air and by sea on a daily basis.

[---]

Ethiopia has supported the transitional president, and is determined not to see an Islamic state founded in Somalia. Independent sources are now also saying that about 500 Ethiopian troops are indeed inside Somalia - just east of Baidoa. With both sides re-arming, and credible reports of foreign troops inside the country, the situation in Somalia looks increasingly grim, the BBC's Martin Plaut reports.

Islamic Courts Union Will Provide Security for UN Aid Workers In Somalia (by DYepes)

Civil-Society leaders in Mogadishu are appealing for humanitarian assistance now that calm has settled after four months of fighting between a popular Islamic movement and ruthless warlords has come to an end. The United Nations has said it will send air only if there is sufficient security for the mission. The Islamic Courts Union has stated they will provide security and a safe environment.

Sheik Aweys is now the new chairman of the Council of the Islamic Courts. He previously headed an armed group which according to the US had links with Al Qaeda. He is on the US list of terror suspects...

BBC: 'Radical' heads Somalia militia

24 June 2006

A prominent Somali cleric who is on the US list of terror suspects has been named as head of an Islamist militia that controls the capital, Mogadishu. Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys is now chairman of the Council of the Islamic Courts. He replaces Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, a more moderate figure.

Sheikh Aweys previously headed a Somali Islamist armed group, al-Itihaad al-Islamiya, which the US said had links with al-Qaeda.

My only concern about Somalia is that we don't allow it to become a haven for UBL. I don't care how we get there. It sickens me that I as an American am expected to feel sorrow for those "innocent victims" on the streets of Somalia while these were the same women who allowed themselves to be used, along with their children, as human shields in 93. The war lords knew our guys wouldn't shoot unarmed women and kids and had their gunmen standing behind them. How can I mourn the people who would allow that?

Ever heard of the Taliban?

I think the world did that with Afghanistan. If the Islamic "winners" are legit and don't turn around in 2 years and grow terrorists, then fine. Nothing wrong with keeping tabs on them for now and pressuring them to promote the rights of all Somalias and not just those that are Islamic.

We're all tied together on this world anymore.

Well supporting the warlords that have kept Southern Somalia in chaos ain't exactly helping the people of Somalia is it? The Islamists so far have seem to have done more than the warlords ever could and the people support them. If the US goes against the wishes of the Somali people and interfers then it shouldn't be complaining when they respond in future. I agree with karby, they should be left alone. Don't give them a reason to hate.

I didn't say that I supported backing the warlords. I would if the goal was for some Islamic militants to set up shop to attack my country or others later. I don't think that is what is going to happen though. I think the US (and the UN) need to butt out yet keep an eye on Somalia to ensure equal rights for everyone.

I know what you guys are saying, and you are right to a point, but you can't leave a poor unstable country on its own without keeping an eye on it. Don't you do the same in your neighborhood when suspicious things start happening at the house down the street? I don't support going into someone's house and telling them how to live, but if they beat their kids and are cooking up meth...then knock knock.

we seem to be leaving plenty of poor unstable countries alone when they don't suit the intrests of the US(just look at Sudan for instance)...even worse with this case, is the the US is basically going against the wishes of the majority of the people of that country, and giving support to the people who pretty much tore that country apart. but hey, that's America for you...always answering the world's questons that nobody ever asked...

Islamic Sharia Law has been introduced in Mogadishu. Those who does not practice daily prayer will be killed...

allAfrica.com: Somalia: Islamic Courts Vow to Kill Whoever Fails Daily Prayer

July 5, 2006

In a speech he suggested at the opening ceremony of an Islamic Sharia Law court at Mogadishu Gubta neighbourhood, Sheik Abdalla Ali one of the Court founders insisted they will start practicing Islamic Sharia Law through out the Capital to handle security. "When people accept practicing Islamic Sharia Law every body will enjoy life based on peace and prosperity," Sheik Abdalla said. He also vowed during his speech they will kill any body that fails to practice daily prayer (Salaad). "He who does not perform prayer will be considered as infidel and our Sharia Law orders that person to be killed" he said.

Guess you can't watch the World Cup either without being killed now. Two people were shot and killed for no reason.

news.bbc.co.uk...

I wonder if they replaced Islamists with Americans that there wouldn't be a 20 page post on how evil the US is for killing people wanting to watch a football game. Ahh but I'm sure in a month no one will remember this.

Karby and Shire19...bet those two dead people would of liked to have you standing right next to them when they were shot. Not sure how this "majority rules" thinking of yours is working so far. I guess we will know soon enough if things start getting worse, especially with the new harsh Islamic laws being implemented...doesn't look good to me.

News24.com: Islamist courts flog teens

Somali Islamic courts punished 11 teenagers with 40 lashes in public each on Saturday, after they confessed to "un-Islamic behaviour", including smoking marijuana

The youths were lined up on open ground in the town of Jowhar, about 90km northwest of the capital, and whipped under the supervision of Islamic courts officials, which have begun to implement Sharia law. The event was witnessed by an AFP correspondent.

"This is the start of a new era and we will continue to carry out the Sharia in Jowhar town and all parts of the Middle Shabelle region. We do not have any reverse gear. "It is our responsibility to make sure Sharia laws are respected," said Sheikh Mohamoud Jiliale, an official of the Jowhar Islamic tribunal.

On Friday, around 20 Islamic militiamen raided a wedding party in Mogadishu, flogged a woman and confiscated musical instruments as they enforced a ban on band music in public ceremonies.

All this talk of "peace" might fool somebody, but to me it doesn't look like they are peaceful at all. I guess these teens were lucky that they didn't get killed.

Didn't the Islamic Courts say they didn't want to impose taleban style sharia?
Yeah, right... but maybe strict sharia is better than total anarchy, a step towards a functioning society?

But in my eyes, the islamic courts lost all the little respect i had for them when they banned Football World Cup!!

Ps. Whipping potheads all isn't that bad thing, i'd like to see few annoying pothead hippies around here get whipped

World Cup is not banned and those two were killed by rogues.. Two men have been arrested by the courts and will soon be convicted as they already have been charged with manslaughter.

The Islamic militia movement that controls Mogadishu, Somalia's capital, arrested two members for killing two people who were watching a World Cup soccer match, the group's leader said.

The two allegedly shot a teenage girl and a businessman who defied their orders to stop watching a Tuesday match.

Sheik Hassan Dahir Aweys said the group had not officially banned TV. The fighters will be charged with manslaughter under Islamic law; punishment could include compensation for the victims' families.

National security forces in Baidoa are on high alert. They expect an attack from the Islamists any time. If Baidoa is attacked, Ethiopia has said it will intervene...

BBC: Alert at Somali Islamist advance

Heavily armed militia loyal to Somalia's Islamic courts have arrived in Burhakaba, a town 60km from the base of the interim government in Baidoa. Somalia's interim prime minister says it is clear the Islamists, who control the capital, plan to advance on Baidoa. "The national security forces are on high alert," Ali Mohamed Ghedi said.

Ethiopia, which supports the weak transitional government, has said it will intervene with force if UIC forces attack Baidoa.

Meanwhile in Mogadishu, at least 14 people including a woman have been arrested for watching what Islamists say was a "pornographic" film. "They were watching a sexual film, which is forbidden in Islam" said Sheikh Dahir Shiekhow, chairman of the court in the area. The film, being shown at a local cinema, had scenes of nudity. "At least 20 armed militia with a Toyota pick-up car mounted with a machine-gun arrived where we watched film; they ordered us not to move and then arrested us," said Mohamed Ade, who was released on Wednesday afternoon. Mr Shiekhow said most the detainees had been released after being warned not to watch such films again.

I guess they are lucky to be alive. Most of the detainees had been released (but not all?).

The Islamists have declared holy war against Ethiopia.

BakuTODAY.net: Somali Islamists declare holy war against Ethiopia

21/07/2006 - 20:21

Somalia's powerful Islamic council has vowed a "holy war" against neighbouring Ethiopia, which has moved troops into its lawless neighbouring state to protect its weak transitional government from a feared Islamist advance.

"The Somali people have to fight against Ethiopia, this is a holy war in which we are defending our country," Aweys said on a nationwide local radio, speaking from his native Galgudud region in central Somalia. "The Ethiopians have invaded our country and we must force them out of the country and this will be a holy war of Jihad," added Aweys, who is the supreme leader of Supreme Islamic Council of Somalia (SICS). Aweys is a hardline cleric designated a terrorist by the United States for suspected links to Osama bin Laden's Al-Qaeda network.
