Civil-Society leaders in Mogadishu are appealing for humanitarian assistance now that calm has settled after four months of fighting between a popular Islamic movement and ruthless warlords has come to an end. The United Nations has said it will send air only if there is sufficient security for the mission. The Islamic Courts Union has stated they will provide security and a safe environment.

hey, here's an idea: why not just leave them and their country alone?

Ever heard of the Taliban?
I think the world did that with Afghanistan. If the Islamic "winners" are legit and don't turn around in 2 years and grow terrorists, then fine. Nothing wrong with keeping tabs on them for now and pressuring them to promote the rights of all Somalias and not just those that are Islamic.
We're all tied together on this world anymore.

Well supporting the warlords that have kept Southern Somalia in chaos ain't exactly helping the people of Somalia is it? The Islamists so far have seem to have done more than the warlords ever could and the people support them. If the US goes against the wishes of the Somali people and interfers then it shouldn't be complaining when they respond in future. I agree with karby, they should be left alone. Don't give them a reason to hate.

I didn't say that I supported backing the warlords. I would if the goal was for some Islamic militants to set up shop to attack my country or others later. I don't think that is what is going to happen though. I think the US (and the UN) need to butt out yet keep an eye on Somalia to ensure equal rights for everyone.
I know what you guys are saying, and you are right to a point, but you can't leave a poor unstable country on its own without keeping an eye on it. Don't you do the same in your neighborhood when suspicious things start happening at the house down the street? I don't support going into someone's house and telling them how to live, but if they beat their kids and are cooking up meth...then knock knock.

Guess you can't watch the World Cup either without being killed now. Two people were shot and killed for no reason.
news.bbc.co.uk...
I wonder if they replaced Islamists with Americans that there wouldn't be a 20 page post on how evil the US is for killing people wanting to watch a football game. Ahh but I'm sure in a month no one will remember this.
Karby and Shire19...bet those two dead people would of liked to have you standing right next to them when they were shot. Not sure how this "majority rules" thinking of yours is working so far. I guess we will know soon enough if things start getting worse, especially with the new harsh Islamic laws being implemented...doesn't look good to me.
The Islamic militia movement that controls Mogadishu, Somalia's capital, arrested two members for killing two people who were watching a World Cup soccer match, the group's leader said.
The two allegedly shot a teenage girl and a businessman who defied their orders to stop watching a Tuesday match.
Sheik Hassan Dahir Aweys said the group had not officially banned TV. The fighters will be charged with manslaughter under Islamic law; punishment could include compensation for the victims' families.
