It only happens now and again, but its a little scary when it does. Anyone have any ideas about this?

i know exactly what you are going through, too look at myself seems akward as if the one you are looking at is someone else in the room

sorry to kick this old thread, but i recently had the same. here is my case

Since i had a gf i changed, bad habits died and i tought myself some better habits. My self-esteem and self-image changed as well, it still isnt stable and keeps varying day by day

after a while, every time i noticed my reflection i did see my own face, but didnt recognise it completely. The face had different 'faces'

a nerd-ish guy
a badass cool guy
someone arrogant (scared me to hell)
a self-confident guy (differs from the badass guy since he didnt have the "mess with me and i will kick your ***" expression/look)
a wild guy (imagine wolverine gone mental)

i knew it was me, that it was in me. My theory is that its a side of my character which wants to get out.
after a while i learnt myself how to tap into those different faces, dont ask me how but i did. since i connected to them i rarely see them

i would love some confirmation but i dont know where i could get it...
hope this helped you a bit

i experience something like that. when i look into a mirror it feels like theres something pulling my gaze. i don't know if i can explain this but, i feel as if my subconscious doesn't want me to really see whats there and if i focus and tell myself to look deeper it always reminds me of looking into a pool of water, but if you concentrate hard enough you can see the differences in the reflection. i swear i have another freckle in my mirror reflection...haha kinda far fetched but i just get a whole rush of feelings from looking in a mirror, some good, some bad.

I have a compultion to look in mirrors. I can't walk past one and not look into it. It isn't vanity or anything. I never really feel like I am looking at myself in it either though. Like when I walk past one its like the guy in there is trying to get my attention.

What a curious coincidence!

www.abovetopsecret.com...

This thread details an account of how looking into someone's eyes alters perception.

//add: Great to hear about all your expiriences

I never got the feeling that I was looking at a past life self, but every now and then when I walk by and glance in the mirror, it seems like for just a split second, what I'm looking at isn't me. It's an odd feeling, and I have to do a double take and look at myself for a few moments. I haven't really tried staring at my eyes in the mirror for an extended period of time. I'll have to try that.

The times it hits me most is when im a little tired and my head is losing focus.
i know it could just be the tiredness but i know its not since i have had it happen on awake times as well.

feels like my tiredness unleashes the trapped me's which dignity and how i was raised keep hidden inside me

Hehe, I thought it was just me that got this feeling; -

this was a game I played when I was younger (maybe about 12 or 13) but it does give an uneasy feeling after a while..........I'd do it maybe once every 8 months or so because it was such as weird experience - like spending an hour thinking about infinity and finally understanding it for about 0.8 seconds...ah, my way with words fails right now but whatever.

Like kerrymac said, it starts with the thought that you're seeing yourself as an actual person, like you are an outside observer watching another person. Then you realise that the person in the mirror is what other people observe of you.....and then you realise that you have complete control over this person in the mirror.

Truly weird feeling, makes me feel somewhat uncomfortable.

Also, I tend to avoid looking into mirrors past dark......

I took a candle into a dark room and lit it and stared at a mirror for 30 minutes one time. A book I read said to try it and see what happens.
You have to stare right into your own eyes and concentrate on your feelings.

I saw some pretty wild stuff and saw movement in the peripheral vision zone.

You can do it too by getting another person and staring into each others eyes, never looking away and limiting blinking. You just can't describe it until you experience it.

You sure you didn't smoke something before you looked in the mirror?

That's a kind of common side effect, don't look in the mirror when your on something.

I am surprised at how old this thread is but it's still so intriguing! Good to see some more discussion on this crazy topic. Mirrors are real freaky straight up. I'm looking a huge mirror right now, and I can't see any of myself in it, but it feels like a portal to another world and makes me want to go stare at it.

OK, let me explain my stand point...

When i was younger I was heavily into smoking weed and hence we would have, what we called, "stoner conversations".... during one of these conversations we discussed the following (although alot slower and "spacier")...

When you stand in front of a mirror and stare at your reflection, it is NOT you. If you stare at your reflection long enough and put yourself into a trance by it, it becomes a different person. I should also note at this point that a friend of mine said he believes this could be the first sign of schizophrenia... but hes not a qualified doc
.

Essentially it went off into a conversation about what makes you, you. Is it your physical self? or is there something inside of you (namely a spirit/soul of sorts) that defines who you are?

It should also be noted that im not a strong believer in afterlifes/souls/gods or the like... this is simply a stoner conversation i offer to you as a potential theory.

When I was in experimental stages at a young age, OMG, nearly 20 years now. The most interesting thing for me to do while trippin was to stare in the mirror. I would persuade others to try, and I found most people didn't share my sentiments.

I was never afraid of what it was going to show me, but I did have to refocus my eyes many times out of fear.

I have to agree with you on this..I feel the same way..its almost as if its bizarre to know that you control yourself..like you look at yourself and think wow im in control of this person..with me I begin to see myself more as skin rather than a person the more I look at myself..its wierd but its like you are saying

I sometimes think I look different in the mirror than I do in real life.

I have been creeped out by mirrors for the past couple of years. I can never focus on myself, I am always focusing over my shoulder in the mirror. My eyes are always drawn over my shoulder, as if I am supposed to see someone behind me. I used to wear make up and the like when I was in high school, so I could stand mirrors at that point in time. But after a while I couldn't stand there and look in the mirror anymore. I'm probably coming across as...incoherent? I don't know how to word the feeling I get.

I think I've just successfully rambled an entire response without explaining anything. Your welcome
.

Hey, folks - first-time poster, here.

I have had some strangeness with mirrors before as well, and recently in fact. Not long before I entered a time of some personal strife, I happened to look at myself in the mirror, and while it was my face, the person looking back didn't seem like me.

For one thing, I know what it feels like when I give someone an evil smirk. I wasn't getting that sensation from my facial nerves, but the mirror image of me was clearly smirking at me like he knew something was about to happen.

Another telling factor was the complete lack of anything resembling empathy in the image's eyes. Again, my face, but once you got past the eyes, it just seemed like there was either nobody in there, or someone who was completely dead inside.

I guess on some level I took it as a warning, because not two weeks later, I embarked on this life-change which, while hard, has overall left me in better emotional shape than I was. It's only after thinking about it that I reached the idea that this may have been a reflection of what was to come if I continued the way I was going with the person I was with.

It's not the first time mirrors have given me odd feelings - generally speaking, if I'm in a room with a mirror in it, I tend to leave the lights on, and I never have a mirror in a room where I am sleeping, if I can help it.

I exp the same thing. Just simple states of mind that we all go through. If you are constantly isolating, staying to yourself, on the PC all day...it can produce the experience you describe. Might be the movies or tv shows you watch as well.
