I don't listen to much mainstream hip-hop/rap, because a lot of the stuff played on the radio and MTV does sound the same. But I do like rap and hip hop.

As for hip hop/rap promoting violence, go listen to Saul Williams; one of the smartest guys in the entire music scene and is overtly anti-violence. He's also a slam-poet and has written three books of poetry. The man is a genius, pure and simple.

I'd have to say my favorite rap group is Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. Yes, they have some very violent songs, but I'm just blown away at how awesome and fast they can rap. It's amazing.

Also, check out De La Soul, Del the Funky Homosapien, the RZA, The Fugees, THe Neptunes, Jazzy Jay, Afrika Bambaataa and Man Parrish.

I prefer the likes of Spearhead, Digital Underground, The Goodie Mob (Soul Food! what an AWESOME song!), plus I like the Beasties and Eminem, he's funny as hell.

The idea that rap 'just' glorifies violence is never based on a thorough study of the field. Early hip-hop in particular was the sound of protest - "black codes from the underground".

And I really like KRS-1's 'sound of da police'. I know this stuff is all pretty old now, but I don't go for much of the new stuff I hear because it's all a bit mainstream. My energy tends to go into creating music and finding new jazz - my current favoured genre - rather than seeking out the decent stuff away from the marketplace.

I'm not much of a fan of rap because I go to a school where all people listen to is Punk,Rock,Classic Rock, Indie,Alternative.

Every once in a while a rap song will come along that I like. If rap wasn't invented then how would I use the Subwoofers in my Truck ?

Well I'm kind of disappointed because out of all the rappers and artist I have not heard the name of who I consider to be the greatest Rap ARTIST of all time, DMX. Now even if you dont like rap go to any lyrics website and read a few of his songs, he is incredible. To me he is the best because he has a way of showing how closly good and bad, love and hate really are. He really puts his souls into most of his songs, sadly he does have some Mainstream stuff that is crap, Money, Cash, Hoes. and a few others. Listen to some of his revelation songs it is incredible. He is actually a manic-depressent so he can show a few different things. btw I hate rappers such as Nelly, Ludacris, 50, and alot of eminems stuff. O yea and for you hardcore rockers, Ozzy did a song with DMX, its called No Where To Run, its pretty good.

I'll def look for songs by Saul Williams & Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. I love violent songs.. lol Eminem had some of those in the good old days.

I love Buddy remix, Ring Ring Ring, A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturdays, Days of Our Lives and Keepin the Faith by De La Soul.
From Del, all I've heard is Mistadaboline which is an excellent breakbeat. I know of Boogie Down Bronx by Parrish and a bunch by Afrika Bambaataa. Let me know of good songs by the others.

Rap sucks, maybe not the message but definatly the life style

I just dont get why people wear pants around their knees and wife beaters and bling bling and bass you cant hear the music over. And can you rappers please use proper english. Not that all of people that like rap act that way but most do

Wife beaters? I'd never beat my wife. I sag my pants only so they're baggy. The life style is hard, but its cooler then wearing spiked collars and mohawks

DMX is very cool. I listen to his songs, too, especially Party UP and X Gonna Give It To You. I also liked the B**** Please 3 with DMX and Tupac. DMX is cool, but NOT better then 2pac. Go 2pac. Go 2pac. Go 2pac.
GO rap. Go rap

Gold in my watch, diamonds in my chain
When someone messes with me, I bring red rain
Crusin in da black hummer, on 26s
When I walk by, n# get up
Cuz when I get mad, my glock goes POP!
Drop
Stomp
Killin yo breed off
Anihilating entire blocks
They call me Russian soldier
And I'm poppin slugs till my last breath

That's just a rap I made off the top of my head. I love the lifesyle, saggy pants, white reeboks, white Ts, tipped caps, bandanas, durags, black cars, shiny rims and spinners, loud music, subwoofers, lots of BASS, lots of homies, and keepin it real. Fo show!

It's an interesting cultural phenomenon, but it takes a real stand out performance for me to listen for an extended period of time.

I'm not impressed by the fact that they sample music from other artists - but I understand they've "got something to say" - it's just a shame they're in such a hurry to say it they can't take the time to master the art of original composition.

Another thing that really grinds my nerves - same topic, over and over again. Very little variation in theme and presentation.

Having to listen to the bass of the car four cars back at a stoplight is annoying.

And the constant devaluing of women is getting rather old. I've never had much respect for any culture/subculture that mocks the value of it's female members.

The level of arrogance and attitude on the part of the performers is self interested and has little to no asthetic value for me.

It's just overwhelmingly negative. Restating the problem over and over again rarely helps present a solution - especially to a younger generation who is still learning how to form an opinion of the world.

I'm going to have to side with classic R&B on this one.

Most people who say they don't like rap/hip-hop, just haven't heard the right stuff. I used to be in the same boat, thinking "oh, it all sounds the same, sample this and sample that and then talk about how hard core you are". But not all rap is about violence. And more and more indie hip-hop acts (such as the Anticon Collective) are gaining noteriety. For those interested, I highly reccomend you check out the following acts, and enjoy!

Brother Ali
Dose One
Mos Def
Buck 65
Sage Francis
The Roots
Atmosphere
DJ Shadow
Bus Driver
Talib Qweli
Saul Williams
Alias
Heiruspecs
Subtle
Del the Funky Homosapien
Common
cLOUDDEAD
Dosh

Rap mocking women? It does sometimes, but not always. Mine NEVER does. Bass at the red light? Well not all rap has such hard bass. Bad for the kids? Depends. Rap varies. Depends on the artist, and depends on the song. Rap is a very big music and there are alota different kinds of rap. I recommend for you to try listening to the song DEAR MAMA by TUPAC. I'm sure this will be a different experience for you so try it. Take my word for it. Dear mama is not the only one, you just gotta look around. If you like R&B, I'm sure you will find SOME rap you might enjoy. You just gotta look for it. Tupac has alot of good songs, so I suggest you start there. But there are many other artists as well, so just look around.

There seems to be a great deal of confusion here as to what is rap. Artists like Jurassic 5, Run DMC, Beastie Boys and De La Soul, for example, are hip hop - while Eminem and 50 Cent are rap. There is a difference - I think KRS-One says, "Rap is something you do, hip-hop is something you live."

I think rap, in my opinion, is generally garbage. The genre has such notable standouts as Tupac, Biggie, and the aforementioned 50 and Eminem. What they all have in common are lyrics glorifying domestic violence, hatred, and drug use. All have (or had, in the case of the dead ones) long police records and are best known not for their talents as artists, but by their deaths or court appearances.

I'll take old-school hip-hop any day.

i agree with bripe, you relaly hafta go searching for good hip hop now these days...the are only a odd few songs that just happen to get on the radio by luck tha i like...that actually have meaning behind them...but i don't listen to any of the shoot em up, get drunk at the club type stuff any more...just the real life stuff and the such, that people actually put eddort into....
