I'm SERIOUS!!!
I'm not that into rap, but I like D12. I find it weird because Eminem sang about the fued in "Toy Soilders". Anyway, it's sad. Because "Proof" knew alot of good musicans, even in the pop world. Here's the link to the news, and here is Eminem's lyrics.

Department, Proof (real name: DeShaun Holton) suffered a gunshot wound to the head at the CCC Club on East Eight Mile Road, near Gratiot Avenue. By the time police arrived just after 5 a.m., the club — which was operating illegally, after hours — had been cleared out, but several witnesses have come forward to discuss the incident with investigators.

The police spokesperson said only that "an altercation occurred [inside the club], and shots rang out," but would not discuss the shooting further, as the 32-year-old rapper's next of kin have not yet been notified.

Both victims (the other man's name has not been released) were transported to hospitals; Proof was rushed to St. John Holy Cross Hospital, while the second victim, who is 35 and also sustained a gunshot to the head, was taken to St. John Hospital, where he's listed as being in critical condition. Proof was pronounced dead on arrival.

I think it's sad. Because he was trying to make rap music better, and was a "revolutionary" in the music industry, and was also considered by many people as an "up and coming" producer. I feel sorry for other D12 fans and rap fans. I just hope his family and friends can deal with it. I alos have a thread on BTS with more information on him. It's even more depressing due to the lyrics in the song "Toy Soilders" about D12's many rap fueds with all it's members.

Yeah, who knows, this guy could have instigated it. Sometimes when you mess with the bull you get the horns.

Being "down" and "keepin' it real" sometimes have their disadvantages.

^^ That is pretty cocky to say that Proof "deserved" it !! But I'm not into hip-hop a whole lot.

I always had a feeling that the guys at shady records would face problems, especially after that whole "go to sleep B#" thing. Eminem might have got repreive after the whole Toy soldiers thing but I always knew somebody was going to get it.
:shk:
Too bad it had to come to this! Hope that this the last of these hip-hop 'pop' things.

What the heck are yall talkin about give me some lyrics where Proof was so called "gangsta rappin"...for the sake of hiphop!! Judgement with no kind of basis in the truth...extreme embrace of ignorance. What do any of us know about the kind of life he lived? Kid was at a club and got shot...not because he was gangsta frontin but because fools get drunk and don't know how to act. It's a sad fact of this violent society...bullets don't got a name on 'em.

Rip...to the hypest hypeman in hiphop--thought I'd say that cause that's what I came here to do in the first frickin place...calm down, what would skippy do...what would skippy do...okay, I'm coo.

Have you ever even heard him rap?

Um, heres your "proof".

D-12 World,
[Proof] 40oz, Track 16.
See me on the ave daily, be running this #
If your chick get loud I'll G Money that bitch
Packing mags and clips, I'll smash ya clique
Because of Proof they put the G in the alphabet
Smoking weed, drinking Henny, Remy and that Jimmy

[Proof] Get My Gun, Track 11.
My whole outfit count clips
Get you're house lit the # up
You're spouse #, and you're mouse clip

Watch you hollow when the hollow tips go threw you're skin
I'm in love with the sin, tell Bugz I'ma see him
When I cock back might put the door on you're friends
Make a run, gotta him, bust a slug on his chin
Ain't going no were like the drugs outta Kim
I'm a psycho icon, a mightful might bomb
Get a eye full of lid when I slight you're lights out
With a street cleaner, whipe you're life out
Bullets know at you're ears, like a Tyson fight bout
# the night clout, guns, clips...(I'M GONNA GET MY...)
# that run bitch!

D-12 World
[Proof] I'll Be Damned, Track 4.
Which one of you niggaz wanna' be ?boltion? bump heads

Send a gangsta to sleep two by two like bunk beds
Never leave the crib without packing my black burner
On some T. Ali rapper to merk a have murda
Incorporated, Hitman Herry is at you're service
Reach for me one more gain' and thats closed
For life as D12, no ice and spreewells
Every night that I chill in, I fight by free-will
Knowing I can be killed
Leaving my group, pieces of proof with a reason to shoot
And a liecense to ill
We lost Bugz and I'll be damed if we loose another man from our clan
Without forcing our hand
Estorting you're family, I'll torture you're granny
For my nigga's, I'm on you're mother#ing porch with a 'Cammy

Thats only 3 songs from one album, not even his solo CD. So what were you saying?

I know he spent a good part of his career promoting violence through music.

For the record, I dont think this is a good thing he got shot, but I dont feel sorry for him.

That's not gangsta rap. That's that sick stuff that D12 does. No one takes it seriously--not even them. Nobody was looking at Proof like "oooo, he's so real". Their "hook", so to speak, is to say the most outlandish, insane stuff for a laugh or shock value. They actually admit this, but folk are posting like he lived by the gun. Its obvious these people don't understand the diff between gangsta rap and what D12 does...and I'm thinking you are in the same boat.

The kid's image wasn't gangsta so to say you reap what you sow is ignorant. If Al Pacino got shot at a club would the same thing be said about him. He's not violent in his real life he's playing a character...just like everyone in D12 with their alteregos.

Now, if Fifty got shot and killed then I could understand the assumption. I still wouldn't agree with it, but at least one could draw a comparison between his lifestyle and his death. That's not true of Proof.

The man had some great lyrics, and could make up lyrics out of anything! If you've heard him freestyle you'll know what i'm talking about!

He was the only one in D12 (apart from M&M) who actually could rap!

My thoughts go out to his family!

R.I.P. Proof!

I know full well they were fake. Alot of people who do gangster rap are fake. But gangster rap is gangster rap like it or not. Your in denial. The lyrics speak for themselves.
The message is still there in the lyrics, fake or not fake.

Im only responding to an open challenge for proof of gangster lyrics. I gave nothing but facts, his lyrics, and that he promoted violence through music. The only opinon I gave is that "I dont feel sorry for him."
If this is #ing on his name then he did it himself.

The only thing I said that could be taken out of context to fit this description is that "I dont feel sorry for Proof."
He was involved in a shooting people. He shot someone. He was inside a club that was illegaly open after hours. He willing put himself in the situation.
"Witnesses reportedly told Detroit police investigators that, before he was fatally shot early Tuesday morning, D12 rapper Proof pistol-whipped and shot a man."
He started it!!!!
Why should I feel sorry for him?
I am not hating in anyway at all. Im keeping it real.

If this was a court of law then High Ryder's Johnny Cochrane 'cause he just slammed the freakin' door.

This has nothing to do with "culture", it has to do with cause and effect....period!

Peace

edit to add: Is it a shame that the guy's dead? Absolutely. Did he deserve it? If the eyewitness reports are correct, absolutely.

while it maybe pointless to continue because you can't hear above your own "opinions" which are based in a complete lack of history of the thing we are discussing...I'm going to try to explain the difference. To be considered gangsta rap there has to be an illusion of struggle with something more than your own image. One of the founding fathers of gangsta rap (no not Dr. Dre) Ice T, the original gangsta, has a catalog that frames exactly what gangsta rap is...it's not violence for the sake of violence or the shock value of violence. The music is violent because their life has been surrounded in violence. Gangsta rap is violence as a symptom or side effect not as the main theme. Scarface, MJG and Eightball, Above the Law, some classic Ice Cube--that's gangsta rap.

Example: Scarface off "The World is Your's"
The Wall

Its f-k up, I'm looking at myself in the mirror
I'm seein' something scary, its slowly coming clearer
I had a funny feeling that today will be the day
that someone tries to blow my m-kin ass away, but hey
I'm running out of time to be blunt
I never had the nuts to make the m-king final cut
I've been depressed for no f-king reason
but every problem's got a reason; I'm kinda havin' trouble breathin'
somebody help me, hear my plead, my battle cry
my psychic told my that its gonna be hard for Brad to die
she told a lie, I think I oughtta shank the b-h
I got my pistol, thinking if I should shoot the s-t
click, bang, I jammed it, I slammed it
aw s-t, *
I'm havin' a f-ked day to begin with
I lost a b-h, a bird, and then this
my homies tend to think I get too high
I'm doing fine, now pass me the formaldahyde
the only thing that seems to help me cope
is when i'm drunker than a m-ker puffin' on the chronic smoke
and then I'm able to deal with the woes
the friends, the foes, the b-hes, the hoes
I gotta gang of niggas, but none of them I'd f-k
I gotta gang of b-hes, but none of them I'd trust
trust a b-h, nope, uh-uh, never
I'm havin' too much trouble tryin' to keep my damn self together
they got me by the balls
so please, help me break these m-king...
(pause)
these m-king walls

That's gangsta rap. Often imitated, but if the hero is a gun or the violence and not the storyteller it aint real. Dafunk, you're right, its hard to explain our culture to folk on the outside judging in but I can't help it. I was going to let it go, but its totally wrong to say just cause a person raps about killing that makes it gangsta rap...that would mean ICP is gangsta rap too....or shadow's lil freestyle drunk podcast makes him gangsta rap.

shoot, I wish I could find an example with less swears but we are talkin about gangsta rap here...not Will Smith. Ice T's Six in the Morning would've fit...but I love ACT so I used him.

Eh, I gave up long ago. You can't force it. Its something very, very relative to our environments, and I am not going to try to spoon feed it over the computer screen. We can all run around kickin dirt on a dude that just got killed over something probably pretty stupid because he lived in the ghetto. I hear people like "Oh my gosh, he was on 8 Mile?! Thats a bad area...I remember the movie." I was just eating chicken at the Popeyes on 8 mile like 2 weeks ago with a good friend of mine.

You people have no clue what you are talking about because your entire sense of "ghetto", or "thug" is based entirely on the Real World, or BET. Sticking feathers up your butt don't make you a chicken. Rapping about these things everone perceives as violent and terrible is only relaying life. When you live surrounded by drugs and violence and poverty, what do you expect lyrical content to be? Did you think they were making records for the Disney Channel? They dont wanna be bumped in Malibu. It music for the culture. It doesnt mean that Proof was a killer, or that he robbed people, or sold crack, or whatever you all thought he was doing...he was only relating to his environment. He was selling records.

Or was Steve Miller advocating robbery and murder with,"Take the Money and Run?" What about Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff?" Its just easy to defame the dead black dude from Detroit, all because he rapped about the violence that surrounds him and probably carried a gun for protection.

And Saph...Doesnt that make Searching for Jerry Garcia kinda prophetic? You picked that one up right? It was peppered with repentence metaphors. The guy was begging for forgiveness for like half the album. Its kinda sad. I had to listen to it yesterday to remind me.
