OK, I post this here because I actually think it is relevant...

Wal-Mart Web Site Makes Racial Connections

Wal-Mart apologized yesterday after its retail Web site directed potential buyers of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "Planet of the Apes" DVDs to also consider purchasing DVDs with African American themes.

The world's largest retailer said in a statement that it was "heartsick" over the racially offensive grouping and that the site was linking "seemingly random combinations of titles."

"It's just simply not working correctly," said Mona Williams, vice president of corporate communications for Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

The article continues with...

The company said it was alerted to the problem early yesterday afternoon after word began spreading among bloggers. When visitors to Walmart.com requested "Planet of the Apes: The Complete TV Series" on DVD, four other movies were recommended under the heading "Similar Items." Those films included "Martin Luther King: I Have A Dream/Assassination of MLK" and "Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson."

Williams said similar titles were called up when the DVD of the movie "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" was requested. There were three such combinations involving those two movies and African Americans films, she said...

Like most other major retail sites, including Amazon.com, Wal-Mart's site directs users searching for movies to other titles that might interest them; Wal-Mart calls the process "mapping." Wal-Mart said last night that the system was malfunctioning but did not explain why or how...

Isn't this "mapping" really just tagging???

I would hope that ATS won't use the tags to start targeting ads to specific ATS members.
I know if that started happening I'd be gone.
I think we have a pretty web-savvy group on this site, and most members would not put up with that kind of blatent advertising.

And remember, you can always block incoming ads by fixing your browser.

Keep on tagging.........

Edit to include: The members of this board make it what it is.
Without the input from the members of this board, the board would not exist.

Admin can't piss off the members without cutting their own throats.
They walk a fine line, but

I'm sorry for not being clear, anxietydisorder. I was not making any comment concerning ATS' intentions...

I was suggesting that if the process was in fact tagging that caused the Wal-mart "problem", it really would mean that such racist associations were wilfully made and that nothing was screwy with their software as they suggest.

Perhaps I really should have posted that article in its own thread.

Just wanted to clear that up.

EDIT: Ok...new thread on that topic started here.

Yeah, I´ve often noticed "View ads about Satan" within the "Ads by Google" located below the menu-buttons at the top of the page. It could be because of the "Hell"-part of my username maybe? It´s a conspiracy!!

I don't want to come across in a nasty way, but I may be a bit short because of "spacedoubt" and the thread that is running right now to stop smoking.
www.belowtopsecret.com...

OH MAN, I WANT A SMOKE....

I just sent a gripe/idea up to staff to get more attention to this project because I don't feel enough staff have promoted this topic.

And loam, I love your work. I make a point to read almost everything you post.
Toss in a few tags and put yourself on the list.

All these threads need tagging:
www.abovetopsecret.com...

And Hellmutt, you should see what comes up from google when you use a name like anxietydisorder. They think I need medication.......

Much easier to find related threads now.

I just noticed that theres no option to search Tags on the search page.

Perhaps that can be added to make searching more efficient for some subjects.

Also you can open multiple windows of the same thread and TAG it with more than 30 characters. I would advise against doing this because I am sure the tags are monitored and you will get them removed and lose points! Just a heads up to all you TAGGERS out there!

I u2u'd SO and Mirthful about this issue also.

I was able to place all the below tags on the one thread.
www.abovetopsecret.com...

Maybe we should have a ruling from Higher Up on this, if we are allowed to use this practice while tagging.

I know I'd love to add more than what we are limited to (30), to many of the threads I tag.

It would be nice to get an answer on this, because if it's allowed, I'll use it.

I see members have been tagging:

DustintheWind has added 4,706 total tags.

That's almost 300 new tags for today, and you'll be in the 5,000 plus with a few more tags

I have another idea about the tag counter, mabey the admin could integrate it like they do with the bar for the post count below the points total?
Just a thought.

As I've been tagging, I noticed some of the older threads had Chinese characters placed here and there. .

Those are fancy quote marks instead of regular quote marks.

There was a change made to the board a while back that made special characters, like curved quotes, appear as weird black triangles.

I've found another character in an important thread...the first post of the
David Icke interview. I can't see this as a weird triangle, Ace of Base...this is definately something else.

A diamond sorry, not a triangle.
That's what I was talking about.

Look at where it appears.
It in words like don't and wouldn't and around text that looks to be surrounded by either ' or ".

wouldnt , Its, polarities

Ok..this is starting to make sense...

What I see in the place where the 'box' is in 'wouldn?t, is a question mark, like I've indicated.

What do you see in the line beside the David Icke pic which reads;

Tales from the Time loop- the most comprehensive expos(x)....

I've bolded where I see a character, very complicated structure, very Chinese looking.
Could it be that different PC's are seeing different things?

Further to this mysterious icon...when I try to take a snapshot of the page, the character disappears, When I try to translate it into English, the character turns into a 'box'.

The only way I can think of showing you what I mean is to take a pic with my digital camera...which I'll try to do.

What I see is a black diamond with a question mark in the middle.
That's what I see on all of the bad characters.

It's supposed to be Exposé.

Ok...this is starting to make sense now...different computers are seeing various icons. I still see a Chinese type...and no diamonds or boxes.

Here's a camera shot of what I see...too bad the quality isn't perfect, but if you can zoom in on the line indicated, you'll see what has been bugging me.

BTW, Ace of Base, thanks for at least trying to get to the bottom of this. Obviously, the chinese icons are showing themselves on my board and Seekerof's only...so far. I wonder why?

I wish Skeptic Overlord would chime in on this too...just to forever dispel my concerns over spies and hidden cyphers
