That's really #in stupid that they need to make their own school. The gays want to be acknowledged and blend in with regular people, but then they go and separate themselves by making a dumb school. That school come under attack?

that such a school fails in its most basic objective....preparing students for the real world. These grads will be ill-prepared for dealing with the real world realities of non-acceptance, etc.

i agree

i also feel it is futile to put children into this kind of "sheltered" enviroment. what happens when they go from this enviroment where they can be "open" about their sexuality and then are thrust into the real world where being open like that is going to be met with less than happy responses? i myself do not care what anyones sexuality is and more to the point i dont want to know, this applies to EVERYONE.

i also feel this school will encourage them to "act out" with their sexuality. what i mean by this is our society while saying sex is wrong on one level says its ok for gays to parade their sexuality in a parade on public roads. in other words some people feel this overbearing urge to let everyone know what they do in bed and to be honest i am sick of it.

just like when johnny or suzie blurts out at the thankgiving table "i'm gay!!!" in front of the whole family, i dont see why people act this way. and i dont see why they are telling people who A) dont want to know B) shouldnt know. sex, regardless who it is with, is a private matter. i never once felt the urge to blurt out "i'm straight" at the dinner table. my sexuality never once became a topic at school as it has nothing to do with math, geography, etc. personal matters stay at home where they belong. people do not "get" this and i dont know why.

i think its also equally futile to expect people to accept you for who you are. as much as we think its wrong it is a right to not accept another persons lifestyle. we can not like other people for whatever reason we choose. we can think this is wrong but its not something you can get rid of or outlaw. people do not like me simply because i am a male or that i am straight or that i am white or whatever. am i going to cry over it? nope. i dont care if anyone likes me or not.

i find it ironic that the open minded "enlightened" people are pretty much intolerant of people with a view that does not coincide with theirs. i would laugh at this but the fact that one kind of intolerance is accepted while another is not is anything but funny.

i think this school is going to set a dangerous precedent in the future.

I went to high school in a small northeastern town. It was pretty diverse, though a little more "well-off" than not. The football team did well, there were the usual cliques, and for the most part it was a typical high school.
Including the time one of my best friends was jumped after school because he's gay.
And the time a 16 year old lesbian was attacked in the hallway by a group of guys.
In one year in a small, typical high school, both happened over the course of 3 months.

Why have a school for homosexual youth?
Maybe so they can be afforded the same educational opportunities as the rest of us without fear of being physically assaulted, or emotionally tortured.

And why can a person not be aware of their sexual orientation when they're 16?
How many people here had their first "intimate" experience during (or before) high school? I'll bet money that every straight person knew damn well they were attracted to the opposite gender long before they first got laid.

Instead of whining about how bad an idea you think this is, try taking a look at what someone faces because of who they love.

psychology.ucdavis.edu...

I could go on.
Instead, try a little thing called "empathy." Put yourself in someone else's shoes and try to imagine how your life would be affected by the ways you (and society in general) treat certain groups of people.

While I have no problem the gay folks this seems discriminatory against kids that arent gay. I would guarantee the student teacher ratio would be different there at that school; Its going to cost more (again, this is a public school) to educate these children and take money away from the standard schools. Are hetero students allowed to go to these special schools?

Perhaps the bigger question: Can taxpayers money go to fund schools that just allow straight students? and Does it open the door to publicly funded religious schools?

I believe there was one of these schools in Texas but it was privately funded. (like say a religious school, which doesnt get public money)

When I was high school there were plenty of kids that might get picked on. We had the special ed kids there which people made fun of, same with the fat kids, the unpopular kids, the smart kids, the chess club, the A/V club, etc. Infact, those types got picked on more than any of the gays, lesbians, blacks, hispanics, Indians, etc.

Problem is, there's no lobby group defending the fat kids if they get beat up. Now, if he's black and fat it's a hate crime, or fat and gay it's a hate crime.

I posted this article in another thread a couple of days ago to underline another point I'll make here- I could care less whether gays have their own school- just don't shout down other groups i.e., minorities (real, ethnic) and those who do so on religous grounds.

I'm not sure I want any of my tax dollars to support non-public, exclusionatory organizations. I don't think this would fall under the proposed voucher system since it has nothing to so with faith- based schooling, and according to population figures extant, would not even rise to the level to warrant a voucher.

Despite the propaganda the voucher system isn't intended for religious schools, per se.

Personally, I believe in the voucher idea. These schools are a great reason for it actually. Have private schools for gays, etc, and then give the parents vouchers to send them to school.

Conservatives and liberals unite?

Oh Christ!!!!!
If gay's are so concerned about having their own school, why not make it a private school. Public school means everyone in the public should be allowed to attend. Talk about discrimination.

I agree that vouchers are not intended for religous schooling, but the reality is that if a parent wants their child out of a low level public school they more than likely would look to private or parochial schooling if funding is available.

So I guess this Gay High School's not going to have a Male Varsity team to play other High Schools

The Guardian

New York City is set to create America's first public secondary school specifically devoted to gay, bisexual and transgender students.
The Harvey Milk High School, named after San Fransisco's first openly gay supervisor who was assassinated in 1978, will enrol about 100 students this autumn in a newly renovated building in Greenwich Village.

Here is the rest of the story:

Ok, it a public school, so he public should be allowed to go. Wait, the public isn't, only the gay public. So it is a private school, not a public school, so shouldn't be funded by the public.

Also, so they won't get picked on? So, should there be an all fat school? An all cheerleader school? An all blonde school? An all jock school? An all geek school? An all pimple faced school? An all stoner school? I'm sorry, they all get made fun of, so should all be given their own schools? Attacked? Hello, how many people here HAVN"T been in a fight, ever, at school? Sorry, that also bull.

Anyways, not public, shouldn't be paid for by the public. If this was an all Midget Albino Indian Delusional school, people wouldn't want 3 million of their tax money going to funds for the school. But it a gay school, and if you don't want your money going to it, you a homophaobe and going to be sued.

They are still gonna be discriminated against. Think of the one guy in shop class with all the girls. Or what schools are gonna compete against them in sports, I highly doubt too many wrestlers are gonna want to compete against an opponent they know is gay.

Well at least they know their drama club will be better than broadway.

I saw an old episode of Boston Public last night about the forthcoming prom. Amongst the characters was a transgender male assuming a female identity (no sex change) and arguing that he wanted to enter the Prom Queen contest. He was persecuted by cowards (general locker defacement and crap) and the principal asked one of his teachers to have stern words to him.

This is an interesting discussion about sexuality, education, prejudice, funding and whether or not in combination of those factors, kids going to this new school will be better off than in a regular school.

It has pointed out the biases of quite a few people who are happy to wear those biases on their sleeves in public.

I like Banshee's posts and attitude.

But sadly, I fell asleep before the end of the Boston Public episode and have nothing further to add.

For someone who eggs me on so, MA, yer awful sweet.

This thread is turning into a sociologist's proverbial wetdream.
At this point, I'm not sure whether this makes a societal statement or a statement on the status of America's public schools.

If a student belonging to an ethnic or religious minority is physically attacked solely based on the above criteria, does the school/school district/community have a responsibility to step in and prevent further incidences?
Or do the kids just suck it up?

I happen to be a sociologist of renowned recognition. And I plan on monitoring the lesbian exploratory classes for personal satisfaction. I shall include it in my next thesis

But that would make you a tautologist of renowned recognition.
