Oh, I don't know; the handwriting has been on the wall for a few weeks now. I think Trump also had some motivating words for him in their secret meeting at Mar-a-lago a couple weeks back. Trump has made it clear his life and policies were going to face a steep uphill battle if he continued on his current path. And, to deviate from that path would have been yet another policy about-face in the eyes of Canadians. He really didn't have any choice; he was cornered...which is exactly what Trump was hoping to do.

Classic!
The reason Trudeau resigned is obvious, many thought he would not make a good govenor.

Yeah he resigned, but he didn’t, really.

His policies will still continue as he delays the election and paralyzes Parliament.

I will always wonder if he would have left had Harris been elected.

When Trudeau met with President-elect Trump in Florida, he learned it's time for him to call it quits.

www.reuters.com...

Does the Prime Minister of Canada make decisions that materially affect the citizens, or, is he/she more like UK royalty...shiny but no substance?

The only reason someone this bad resigns or gets replaced is because they have someone worse ready to take his place. It happenes every...single...time. Won't be any different this time.

Part of the reason he's stepping down is a result of pressure from within his own party, so he doesn't necessarily have the luxury and/or support of his party and his peers if he drags his feet, especially intentionally.

They're the ones who want him out, in other words. ...as does the rest of the world (just like Biden).

I'm not sure I agree there. His own party wants him out.

The democrats here in the US thought they had a viable alternative for Biden, and we all know how that one turned out.

That's my impression too but I haven't been following very closely other than Musk ruffling some feathers. The really interesting question is wether the current collective western meltdown (minus the U.S.?) is "organic" or by design.

ETA -As to Japan:
Political earthquake throws Japan’s politics into uncharted territory

And Japan is really nervous about the situation in South Korea.

Trudeau has ruled as a dictator and a tyrant, so why would he give up power and step down? What's in it for him?

Kudos to Jordan Peterson. He never let up. He exposed Trudeau. How if only we can fix academia, but it's probably too far gone.

Dr. Jordan Peterson tears into Trudeau and his '14-year-old' mentality:

For those that didn't see it coming.

3 weeks ago:

Chrystia Freeland’s resignation seems carefully aimed at removing a sitting prime minister

This was widely reported as was speculation that it would lead to Trudeau stepping down.
