if they are operating in the 600-900 foot altitude, wouldn't they need to inform the local airport about their flights?

The DC situation has me though because if they were operating these drones legally in those areas, then wouldn't the police have been informed about it?

Depends on if they have a flight plan, if they're using flight following, or if they're operating in a company operated testing area, or military MOA.

If they're in airport airspace. Depending on the airspace type, the controlled airspace only goes out about 5nm at the surface, then expands out as you go higher. The airspace around Newark floor is 500 feet. There's one area that goes surface to 7,000 feet by Staten Island. The airspace around the airport is 500 feet, with the floor going up as high as 1800 out by Summit and Livingston.

The police would only be notified if they were operating in a way they needed to know. It all depends on the airspace. There are plenty of places where drones can be flown without issues, because of the airspace restrictions being high enough that the drones aren't going to be an issue. You can also get permission to operate a drone in Class B or C airspace, as long as it's cleared ahead of time, and you meet the ATC requirements.

No. You can fly VFR up to 18,000 feet without a flight plan. It's recommended that you file a VFR flight plan for safety purposes, but it's not required, unless you're crossing into the ADIZ, DEWIZ, or going international. If you go over 18,000 feet you have to fly IFR and have to have a flight plan. You have to be under ATC control and be cleared into Class B or C airspace, but you don't have to have a flight plan.

And now we have the agenda! People are all up in arms wanting the gov. to do something! The answer? More gov control over private drones. No more chance of accidently filming things our beneveloent overlords don't want us to see.
No more private drone videos of 'mostly peaceful riots' or any activity by gov. agents carrying out their duties in perhaps less than legal ways.

We will not be allowed to oversee our surveilers.

Careful what you wish for; government envolvement seldom takes us to a better place.

The two bills that have been introduced won't restrict private drones, except around certain facilities, like airports, and authorizes counter UAS operations at those facilities. I suspect the final bill will combine the two and meet somewhere in the middle. I have no doubt that the government will try to grab power, but it will start subtle.

I think this is exactly what governments are counting on people falling for and believing. They're rolling out a new belief system for those who 'want to believe' and it seems to be working.

N.Y. governor Hochul is calling for extra federal law enforcement. DC will be swarming with them by 1/20/25. BAMN?

Yea,it's here and it's ugly. On that subject...I'd submit the following reflection. You're probably too young to remember "Cool". Steve McQueen was "Cool". Clint Eastwood was "Cool". James Dean was "Cool".

There's no "Cool" left in the world. It's come to resemble "revenge of the nerds"; a place where Sheldon reigns supreme. It's all sameness and cool has been replaced by endless cosplay and "comic strip" heros and human modeling more resembles an endless homage to rainbows and unicorns. The 1967 Mustang has been replaced by the new VW Bus (Van) which of course is all electric, range 243 miles and takes 8 hours to recharge......definitely NOT cool. Carol King has been replaced by Taylor Swift.......who's the antithesis of Cool; she's typical though of the "new" age. She's boring and repetitive; she's 35 years old and her target audience is teens.

All of this has made me wonder if in reality, human kind has reached it's "peak" or is way past it in terms of progress. It's done.

A New Jersey drone pilot says his device lost power and was forced to descend from a restricted chunk of airspace while the mystery flier he was trying to investigate managed to stay airborne despite a signal designed to shut down legal drones.

Michael B, a podcaster and paranormal investigator behind the Terror Talk Productions YouTube channel, lives near the Picatinny Arsenal, an Army facility near where dozens of sightings have been reported in recent weeks. He was flying in the area, attempting to get a closer look at a larger, unidentified object he believes is a drone.

"There was a drone just hanging out," he told FOX 5 New York. "I had full battery life. Not 3 minutes into the flight, I lost control of the drone."
