A buddy who is a pilot said they shut down one of the airports in New York last night due to drones on both approaches into it. WTF over!

It makes me so mad if it's Iran or China doing this. America would never just go ahead and fly drones over another country.

Interesting take. In my limited research until recently is that these have been seen somewhat frequently for the last month or two and then it exploded in the last couple of weeks.

One odd thing I’m noticing is that many of them are different from the next. I’m sure a lot of that’s due to misidentified craft but even the ones people swear up n down are “drones” vary in size, navigational lighting, speed and capabilities. I’m not sure what to think about them being capable of shutting down drones that approach them or that they’re going dark when noticed in some circumstances. It’s all seems very convoluted to me.

Pretty much every single video I've seen to date was a misidentified commercial aircraft. Several have been positively identified down to the flight and airline, like the woman that was talking about hitting one with a laser last night that made it go quiet and turn its lights off, that turned out to be a FedEx MD-11 going into Newark from Boston.

These are just three that I've seen that were identified as drones, by both the media and public:

I've seen a couple dozen videos just in the last couple of days, and every one of them had FAA required lighting, and were somewhere near an airport. There was a beautiful video today claiming to be a crystal clear daylight video of a drone over New York that was quite clearly an AW609 flying out of Philadelphia.

Now multiple aircraft landing at Newark airport are reporting being hit by a green laser from the Staten Island/Perth Amboy area. A recent look by a website that monitors ACARS messages from aircraft found 94 cases of aircraft reporting being hit by lasers.

That wouldn't be cool. Let's hope that anyone who is going to take down a drone knows what they are doing. I don't think bullets or bombs should be used and obviously, there's a time and place to take a drone down.

I don't understand why immediate ordinances and laws aren't passed by cities and states to enforce policies and procedures on flying aircraft.

Like vehicles, boats and other aircraft, drones over a certain size and/or weight should be licensed and identifiable with a visible ID. Ordinances should be passed as to high/low air space regulations, speed and locales of permissible flying areas etc. Also, drones should have to go through the same safety checks as vehicles and other aircraft. All this should have been implemented yesterday. It would help regulate and identify what's in our skies, generate income etc.

Because it's not possible. There's already quite a few regulations, including drones not being able to go above 400 feet in the US, which keeps them below controlled airspace, outside an airport which they can't fly at any way.

The problem with this whole situation is that people are 100% convinced that they're looking at drones, and are ready to shoot them down, but they actually have no idea what they're looking at, and are looking at commercial aircraft. Someone posted a video of a small plane that crashed on the interstate the other night, and was arguing with people initially that were saying it was a plane. He was absolutely convinced that it was a drone. Someone is going to get hurt, and badly.

More examples of misidentification. This guy is insulting people for saying this is a plane, and is absolutely insistent that this isn't a plane.

Another plane flying at night.

This one was sent by someone that says there's no airport near by, and jets don't fly that low and slow.

Another one.

This one insists they're separate craft, which they are. They're different aircraft taking off.

More

Out of focus aircraft over the Hudson.

Another out of focus aircraft.

And all of these are just a few from one thread on Twitter.

I mentioned a few days ago that they were very FAA complient as far as navigational lighting. 😁

I've seen some absolutely INSANE comments about that. Stuff that made me sit and read it two or three times to make sure I read it right.

Actually looks like Venus or a star, zoomed all the way in.

This is Sirius shot through a backyard telescope.

One was that they come here, and they see all of our flying machines lit up, so they copy us because obviously the lights are important. The other one is that we got our lighting patterns from the aliens that came to visit us in the 50s and signed a treaty with us, because the lighting pattern is used across the galaxy.

Just read through all your posts. I didn't realize that so many airplanes were thought to be drones. I guess people should get their heads and eyes on straight before claiming they're seeing exactly what they think they are seeing.

It could be it's just people freaking out more than anything else, creating mass hysteria. But if there are so many drones flying around, there needs to be a way to regulate them. As usual, only law abiding people will follow the laws.

Guess once again, we're all screwed. What's to protect us from enemy drones and whatever vile things they choose to 'share'? Drones will be the new weapon of choice.

Couple of things that came out today:
Frist a short 2 minute video from Penguin 6 about a Drone sighting near DC.

Next was this news report.
From: New York Post

A fed-up New Jersey sheriff said he tried to track the mystery drones swarming the skies above his county — but they “easily” evaded the effort.

The Ocean County Sheriff’s office sent its own “industrial grade” drone into the air Thursday in a bid to follow one of 50 unmanned aerial vehicles a local cop saw “coming off the ocean,” Sheriff Michael Mastronardy said.

The description as given in the story.

The officer alerted the state police, the FBI and the US Coast Guard. Coast Guard officials then reported 13 drones, with wingspans of eight feet, following one of their vessels.

The mysterious drones, which don’t give off heat like more typical versions, swiftly maneuvered out of their clutches, Mastronardy told News Nation reporter Rich McHugh.

and

“If this is not our military, then it’s even more scary,” McHugh said. “These things look like they are fixed-wing and they have multiple lights. I’m not really sure how to process what I saw last night. Both the photographer and I were kind of stunned.”

The SUV-sized, unidentified aircraft have been buzzing New Jersey and panicking residents since Nov. 18.

If these were those taxi-drones wouldn't they have had to register their flight information?

It seems odd that it was captured by a news camera, in daylight, with very little magnification shake.

But it sure does look like a planet or star.

Here’s another article about it.

Depending on what time of day it is. If it was late afternoon, it was probably Venus coming out.

That's one of the things that will come out of this. The politicians will get richer, the defense contractors will get richer, and we'll end up with more C-UAS out there, both handheld with police units, and large systems for fixed locations.

Depends on if they have a flight plan, if they're using flight following, or if they're operating in a company operated testing area, or military MOA.
