Using the bankruptcy provisions in the US is how Trump wrote off a few failing companies while retaining the other hundred or so that he owned that were paying out.

Perfectly legal and an actual business practice used again and again by every major employer in the US.

It is in the curriculum at Penn’s Wharton School as a business strategy.
