Yet how long did this go on? From what I read only a brief time before it came to public attention. One occasion? A few?
One might think that once this little operations came to light, that all the others that had been approached by this crew would have come forth to add their stories to the list, but did any come to the surface? Any?

So no, the secret part does not hold. But the illegal part does though over time those charges against them dissolved to hand slaps. So what seems a more reasonable assumption about this escapade is it was just that, and escapade by a handful of misguided wannabes acting out some fantasy

Pictures like that are hard to find, Google has scrubbed

the actions take are not in dispute, the masonic connection is. They were full of sh!t and hoped that nobody would question this. I find it hard to believe that some cop who was contacted wasn't a mason and did some digging on this, maybe that happened, but the articles don't mention that.

From a masons POV, this is ignorant on it's face. It's not what we do, and if the men doing this were masons, they would likely be brought up on masonic charges and expelled. You don't fool with mother nature, and you don't fool with the masonic order. Not sure what mother nature will do to you, but masons will eat you in a nice stew. (that was a joke)

I noticed he claimed to be a 33 degree mason but didn't claim to be a 33 degree mason of the Scottish right.

Stuck me as phoney.

Is it illegal to represent yourself as part of the masons when your not ?

Can anyone call themselves a mason and get away with it ?

He also called himself a "black" mason. Is that a different group than regular masons ?

I'd be interested to hear a masons perspective on some of these things but to just dismiss everything by saying "no such thing" like advisor did is not only incorrect but not productive.

The idea that they were presenting themselves as something other than what they were is at the core of the thread.

Curiously, while the group calling themselves Masonic Police

anyone can call themselves a mason, there are no laws against it. There is a group of recognized masons called "Prince Hall" masons. Predominantly black masons. For many years, they were not recognized by the UGLE, which is the over arching body of masonry, but they are now recognized and as much masonic as any other group. (The UGLE is the United Grand Lodge of England) And while each lodge is governemed by it's respective state grand lodge, the UGLE has authority over charters and general rules to a degree. (not trying to go off topic, just answering questions as best I can)

Masonry does have sub groups that form, and while they do have to be recognized and authorized by the state grand lodge to be considered "masonic groups", there is nothing stopping a group of masons to form some off books group like a biker group or dart club, they just can't call themselves a masonic group unless it's approved. (I think that's correct, but if not, someone will correct me) There are some masons here, not as many as there used to be, but some.

Claiming to be an offshoot of the Knights Templar is the give away that this was a clandestine group. To date, we have not found definitive evidence that freemasonry is directly connected to the Knights Templar. It would be big news if that happened.

not enough to get context of what he was speaking of for me. It appears to be a Prince Hall gathering, and while in regular AFAM lodges in NC, we don't talk politics at all during lodge, I can't speak for Prince Hall lodges as I am not a member.

I don't have any answers for that, and it's totally odd on it's face. As I said, I don't know much about Prince Hall Masonry, it's supposed to follow the same guidelines as AFAM and F&AM freemasonry I think, but again, can't be sure.

This deserves a lot more attention and a lot more scrutiny. As far as being a 33rd, that's a honorary degree from the Scottish Rite, and it's usually given to those who have put in a lot of time and effort (sometimes $) to freemasonry. In the Southern Juristiction you must first be awarded the KCCH (a red hat), and spend a period of time in that role before you can become a 33rd. And while the 33rd masons are respected, it's not because they hold special powers that I am aware of, just that they should be recognized as men who have supported the fraternity enough to earn such a title. I won't lie and say there is no "political" angle to any of it, knowing who to be nice to and who to make sure sees you seems to have a good bit to do with it.

This might be a much bigger deal than originally thought.
