These cooling towers are essentially all concrete.

I'm no expert, so does anyone know what might be flammable and what might be actually burning?

All very worrying.

What I'm hearing is that the Russians are using the cooling towers to burn tires.

Where are you hearing that from?

The smoke does seem quite black.

I read the same thing yesterday on Twitter

x.com...

Black smoke rises from the Zaporizhzhia NPP, - Mykolaiv region administration (🇺🇦).

According to them, this could be a Russian provocation (set tyres on fire).

The NPP is working as expected.

Odd.

I can't see what might be in there to burn like this.

My guess the Russians put something inside and lit it on fire to scare people. Cars or some tires would make smoke like that.

It's under Russian control so I can't see how Ukraine could be responsible.

The black smoke seems significant but who knows?

I don't think there would be anything radioactive in a cooling tower but, again, I'm no expert.

No one is "blowing up nuke plants".

It's a fire in a concrete cooling tower.

Both sides are blaming eachother. There shouldn't be anything flammable in there.

It's controlled by Russia.

The thick black smoke is odd.

I believe I've heard that Ukraine has been pushing the front line closer to the powerplant.
This might be an attempt by the Russians to scare the locals.

The cooling tower is just concrete formed to move air efficiently so there is no danger with the fire.

"Sooooo...your stating that Russia...set fire to a Nuclear reactor...with Ukrainian drones...at a nuclear facility that is under Russian control...in a war that Russia is winning...?"

There is no nuclear reactor on fire.

There seems to be a fire, with thick black smoke, in or under a concrete cooling tower that should not ordinarily contain anything flammable.

How might it be possible for drones to set fire to a hollow concrete structure creating such thick black smoke?

These are the questions that need to be addressed with some degree of critical thinking.

Preferably without referring to other posters as "brain dead morons", please.

Now thats the pertinent question should some nasty stuff be released into the open air.

It is my understanding that no drones were involved in the fire. Russia loaded the cooling tower with tires and set them ablaze. Russia then claimed that the fire resulted from a Ukrainian drone (typical Russian lie). Ukrainian would have no benefit of striking the tower of their own NPP with a drone; and, even if they had, any ensuing fire would have quickly extinguished itself without an outside fuel source.

I believe what is happening is Russia is trying to stoke fear, possibly as a deterrent, as Ukrainian forces move closer to the Kursk NPP.

Russia loaded the cooling tower with tires and set them ablaze.

It would explain the colour and amount of smoke.

Rule is takes 10 half life for radioactive substance to decay to safe limit

Ruthenium 106 which has half life of year (373 day) would take 10 years to decay down

Fuel elements also contain various isotopes of plutonium - plutonium 239 , the fissile form used in nuclear weapons has half life of 24, 500 years , thus would take 1/4 million years to decay

Given Ukraine's terrible experience with Chernobyl, why would anyone actually think they might want another one?

Who the hell knows what their game is anymore?

Stab-in-the-dark nuclear power plants burning on the news make the headlines, cooling towers or otherwise.

Something along those lines.

Yep. Just look at all the doom and hand wringing on this thread already, all for the price of burning a few old tyres.

Russian propaganda mission accomplished.

Did someone say 'gullibility"?!!!!

They need a large mirror.

Seems like Russia set fire to some tyres and you fell for it.

Logic? Ukraine went through Hell with Chernobyl.

What sort of "logic" might think they would want to go through that again?

"Gullibility"?

Do you have mirror?

Hook, line and sinker, mate.

Ummm...you have heard that..."extraordinary claims...require extraordinary proof"...right...?

Right...?

You've made the extraordinary claim...

Now provide the extraordinary proof...

Merely repeating what five or six other heads full of mush said that their sisters...cousin's...girlfriends...uncle's...great aunt Edna...said she read on the Ukrainian version of the Sacramento Bee...

Is hardly a gotcha moment...

Hook...line...and sinker...

Yes...your such an easy catch...and I wasn't even really...trolling...

Please...never change...old Carp...
