Trump could have been mislead, and was pretty busy at the time. Also, he could have been making an overture. Mostly, we can say Trump was open-minded and optimistic.

It feels like he he thinks he can just round the bases and slide into home
But outside, at her rallies, she’s hitting grand slams with the “coach”
And it’s getting worse for him, everything he tries is a swing and a miss.
