John Edwards, the Information Commissioner, has ruled in favour of the Home Office, which refused to reveal the cost of furnishing a block of flats to be used by 346 asylum seekers in Farnborough, Hampshire.
He rejected an appeal to release the information under freedom of information (FoI) laws, saying the public interest in revealing the cost to the taxpayer of the furnishing was outweighed by the need to protect the asylum seekers from protests and risks to their “health and safety”.
The apartments were allegedly finished with flat-screen TVs and satellite television.
Lee Anderson, the Reform U.K. MP for Ashfield, criticised the decision and said he planned to raise it in a Parliamentary debate on immigration next week. He added: “The real risk is to the taxpayer, who is spending millions of pounds per day on people that should not be in the country.
“The fact that the Home Office and Information Commissioner are hiding or suppressing this information is a kick in the teeth for every single hard-working taxpayer in this country. They should have this information. I think they are probably embarrassed about the cost of it.”
James Cleverly, when he was Home Secretary, paused plans to move asylum seekers into the flats after a local backlash. It was claimed that, on the open market, the flats would have cost £1,400 a month to rent.

The governments latest idea is to stop paying for hotel accommodation and instead rent flats (apartments) for refugees so taking housing stock from British people looking for somewhere to rent and giving it to Illegal Immigrants .... marvellous. Not only are British tax payers paying for the flats but we are also paying for the furnishings and cable TV , how much extra the furnishings are costing us is unknown because the government deem this to sensitive to be released.
Germany are now starting to send them wherever they came from. Cant remember if its Norway or Sweden are doing the same. Poland as we know are letting none in at all.
remarkable what having the Right Wing snapping at your heels will do , isn't it.
At least eight migrants have died off the coast of France while attempting to cross the English Channel.
The deaths occurred off Ambleteuse in the Pas-de-Calais region of northern France overnight, French officials said.
Some 45 survivors of the disaster were rescued.
It comes as French authorities rescued some 200 people off the coast of Calais over a 24-hour period between Friday and Saturday night.
A boat carrying migrants that was in poor condition was located off the coast of Le Portel, a French coastal town, and 55 people were rescued.
Elsewhere, 61 migrants were picked up off the coast of La Becque d'Hardelot, 48 people were recovered near a lighthouse and at the end of the day 36 more were rescued, French authorities said.
All of those rescued were brought back to land.
