Well, Andy, hope is the last to die.
A draw between Hungary and Switzerland would have been handy. Scotland really need to dig deep to keep going and teams can grow and gel as the
tournament progresses.
I remember the 1982 World Cup very well. Italy started off so piss-poor; we drew all our games in the opening group round; scraping through as
runners-up.
That poor qualification then took us into the next stage, a three team round robin… the group of death. We were up against Argentina and Brazil. All
hope seemed lost, yet we beat Argentina. Last game was against Brazil; they only needed a draw, we had to win at all costs. That was arguably, one of
the best World Cup games ever. We got through 3-2 and the rest is history… taking out Poland in the semis and W. Germany in the final, and our third
WC title and Paolo Rossi and Dino Zoff became national heroes.
