If he's looking for people to do national service.

There are scores of unemployed homeless squaddies living on the streets that may wish to accommodate the notion.

Then again they have already seen how the Tories choose to treat their cannon fodder lucky enough to make it back home.

Probably not up for a repeat experience.

Considering they canny even get a house, proper prosthetics, or access to mental health services some of the poor sods now require down to their service to the nation.

Clown shoes is what it is really.

We can have conscripts in a time of dire need when life is ultimately cheap.

We're not there yet.

Domestically speaking if we ever do get there our government has seriously failed. On an international level the nukes will probably fly.

All those nations have very robust 'socialism' or a military completely different than ours in terms of capability. We have a failing system after 14 years of Tories and we have a professional military that's small but highly effective at projecting power.

Just look to France, it doesn't appear Macron's "social cohesion" plan is working despite it being 100% voluntary.

I think having a bigger pool of trained military reserves would be a great idea. Forcing reluctant 18 year old into military service isn't the way to achieve that.

Do you want the first contact with military service your countries youth have to be when the live rounds are flying and someone hands them a rifle?

I would like to think young poms had at least some exposure to small arms, fieldcraft and minor tactics.

It’s their country as well and they deserve to be able to defend it.

It really is. I don't envy whoever gets to take over. If any of us are expecting some kind of radical change to be brought about by this coming election we should temper our excitement. The utter quagmire of #e that they'll have to wade through before they can even think about making any significant changes just boggles the mind. It's not like old policies just get wiped away, they get set in stone and we have to keep chipping away at them no matter how fundamentally flawed we know the outcome to be.

Totally agree BrucellaOrchitis.

But we need to get rid of the current Tory administration just down to what they have done to the nation regarding the last 14 years.

A vote for the lesser of two evils is what it equates to.

Which means politics is broken from the inside out.

Because we are supposed to vote for candidates we believe in that will effect positive change.

And not for the razamaspaz likely to do the least amount of damage.

Politics is now fundamentally flawed by design or so it seems.

This is a sign of desperation. It's an attempt to win back the more traditionally conservative voters who look like deserting the party and going for "Reform" instead. "The return of national service" and "the return of hanging" have been the nostalgic dreams of the rank-and-file for years. Did the speech say anything about hanging?

The historic parallel is the way the original Conservative party, which was a party of landowners, was hoping for years to see the return of the import duties on corn which Peel had abolished. My namesake was forced to spend many years of work "educating" them out of it.

The trouble is that he could have appealed to the right much more effectively by being more successful in stopping migration across the Channel. It's rather too late to tempt them back with less relevant promises.

They just want to make sure they lose the election. As if there was ever any doubt.

The UK is speeding off a cliff and the Tories don't want to be the ones in charge when it finally crashes. That way they reckon they can't be blamed for it. Even though it is their malevolent policies, corruption and incompetence that is largely responsible for the state of affairs as they currently stand.

Hopefully they are eliminated as a parliamentary force entirely come July. Like the Canadian Tories were in 1993. That'd be amusing and a fitting end to the last 14 years of Tory misrule.

Sounds like the teens will have three options.
1, Army
2 Charity
3 # off

Tories win the election. LoL

Maybe in a parallel universe.

As to the idea, its not that it's bad, but him and his crowd first methinks.

After all what good for the goose is good for the gander.

It is a bit Rich , privileged 40+ with no military experience telling 18 year olds they need to Die or get their limbs and eyes removed.

Fixed that for you.

Its not the worst policy suggestion I've ever seen and personally I think it has some merit.
A little bit of square bashing, learning some life skills and practical experience that is transferable into the jobs market.
Add in a little bit of military training and discipline.

As long as those taking part are legally protected from getting called up to any conflict or military engagement I really can see the benefits and thinks its worth exploring.

I do recognise that first of all nothing will probably come of it due to the coddling, over-protective nature of modern day society and the likelihood that The Tories are going to be routed.
Secondly, the teenage and early 20's me would be appalled at what I've just wrote!

Sunak can promise anything he wants because there are no political implications for his career. He is done.

Which I think having more trained reserves is important but let's make it people who actually want to be trained.

Incentivsed short-term military service could be the way.

Maybe hang them if they don't do national service.

2 for 1 deal.

I think it could work! A lot of todays youth seem lost with no direction. This would give them an understanding of discipline and commitment. Some just need pointing in the right direction.

So the directionless and the lost should join the army? What do you think the army is? A place for lost souls and troubled people?
