They should have shot the first one down. Nobody is asleep - they are intentionally letting it happen. Data is $$$$ and China…

Mind Citing the FAA regulation(s) covering that prohibition?

101.33(c) prohibits flight below 60, 000 feet standard pressure altitude "Where the horizontal visibility is less than five miles".

A little insight: The very first Chinese balloon was said to come in over the northwest from Alaska. Either there were two balloons, or the official explanation is false. In Texas, 25 miles east of Austin, I spotted that one or a similar balloon two days earlier moving from the southwest toward the northeast.

It's probably just somebodies weather experiment but, if it was a dangerous or a threat our government and military damn sure wouldn't tell the GP.

Top link on twitter when you search for this topic:

1. Sending lots of harmless balloons, then send harmful when we don’t respond.
2. Send viruses.
3. Send EMPs.

Japan did balloon bombs in WWII - it was ineffective, but government made it secret and didn’t tell people.

Can the "our government cannot control our own airspace now" apologists point out under what other Presidency this has happened?

Thank you in advance...

ETA... I mean, we have to deal with this...

But a freaking balloon that supposedly can't be brought down by the US military while in our airspace is a trending news item.

How much would a box of viruses weigh?

Chemical or biological threats released at that altitude would be harmlessly dissipated by the high level winds aloft to the point that their concentrations would be too low to pose a threat.

You can just make a very small light weight device that cuts the cord from the balloon and releases the box, then the box freefalls and the device is programmed to release its contents or detonate when it reaches the desired altitude. So it is not so harmless afterall.

I am not supposed to say that a Gen 5 briefcase nuke weighs 19 pounds.

But here we are.

There are lots of different things it could do much more inexpensive than that, but ultimately 850 billion dollar defense, and our military can't bring it down, seemingly not being able to track it till it gets over our territory.

Again probably nothing, but didn't the US routinely fly a lone bomber over Japan to get the Japanese used to seeing them?

Hell FWIW it doesn't have to be a nation-state for it to be potentially dangerous.

Even if they were encapsulated? You have far more faith in TPTB than I do. If there's a way, they'll find it.

They aren't going to do that, officially the DOD is saying it's no threat to the public or air travel.

If somebody or some entity had the wherewithal it could be used as a terroristic weapon in several ways. The Japanese were sending incendiary bombs aloft in balloons during WWII believe one killed a person who found it in the PNW

I'm betting if a US citizen owned the balloon, a balloon of some kind flying at 45k feet over Colorado, the FAA would send the Sheriff to their home and cite them, or arrest even and the news would report it as a very big threat to air travel. Big fine, and the poor sap's name plastered all over the news.

So the DoD is full of BS as per usual knowing the current political climate, and what happened last time when all those balloons got shot down.

Spicy! Somebody continues to poke the bear. Perimeter testing, monitoring defense response times and threat assessment based on altitude. The way the MSM blasts everything out IRT, #, you'd only have to fill the payload with different weights and the Internet does the rest. Literally just probing outer defenses and following how changing jet streams and patterns in the atmosphere manipulate payloads at different altitudes based on weight and aerodynamic influences.

This time media says, “No threat, unknown origin”

Last year, media said, “Potential threat, China”

Hmm…
