Democrat Tom Suozzi won a hotly contested special election for Congress on Tuesday, the Associated Press projected, retaking a seat in suburban New York and offering his party some reassurance amid high anxiety about President Biden’s political vulnerabilities.

Suozzi beat Republican nominee Mazi Pilip to replace Republican George Santos, who was indicted on a charge of fraud and then expelled from Congress late last year amid revelations that he fabricated much of his life story. The race for New York’s 3rd District — long viewed as a dead heat — played out in a suburban part of Long Island that favored President Biden by 8 points in 2020 but then swung toward Republicans, backing Santos by the same margin.

In the first major election of 2024, the Dems have pulled out a win a flipped a seat in the House. But the bigger takeaway from this race as we look towards November is that the Dems have overperformed once again. Going into the race, polls had Suozzi winning by only a point. The reality is that he will win in a landslide with nearly 10 points on his opponent.

This is the same trend we've seen since Roe was overturned. At the end of last year the Dems were overperforming, on average, by 12 points on what was expected. It would appear this trend will continue as we get closer to the general election.

Funny you speak of moral and integrity on a thread in regards to George Santos.

Why do you hate women so much?

Why does the Left hate women so much?

The race was lopsided from the beginning. Suozzi is well know in NYS 3rd having worked in politics for decades in the area. Especially amongst the over represented Italian community of wich he came up in. Mazi Pilip was a complete unknown before the election.

Then there was the biggest snow storm in two years in the area. Heavy wet slushy dangerous type of snow. Poll expectations went out the window the night before the election.

Dispite the name recognition overwhelmingly being in Suozzi's favor and the weather being bad; Suozzi still had to outspend Pilip by a more than a three-to-one margin to get the results he did.

Per Roe ... in the last two cycles the same area voted overwhelmingly for Republican Governor candidate Lee Zeldin (who's coattails george santos road in on); as well as Republican Nassau County Rxecutive Bruce Blakeman and Republican Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine (flipping a long time Dem seat). This lead analysis to declare that Roe has no importance in this area of the country. Which makes logical sense; its a deeply purple area of the country, in a state were Abortion access is set in stone dispite any one person's opinion about it. Abortion is a non issue on Long Island.

And finally out of the Democrat play book for election losses excuses. Mazi Pilip is a "black" "woman" with a "foreign accent" who ran against a well known white man.

I hate to disappoint anyone; but this special election is no bellwether.

Projection much?

Why not comment on the topic of the thread?

Suozzi demonstrates that there is a desire for change. To ThreadBearer's point, could this be trend across the country? My opinion is that this is not necessarily a indicative of a trend as of yet. If i recall correctly, Santos' original race was quite close.

I would need to see some more flips in some of the more conversative regions before the alarm bell is rung.

As I mentioned, this isn't an isolated incident. This has been a trend for over a year.

In another race yesterday, the Dems also managed to flip a seat in the PA state house with the winner primarily running on a campaign tying their opponent to Trump.

If we need more election data to decide on which direction change is going; in this area, the change is moving in the Republican direction. It's a normally purple area of the country; however Republicans have been out preforming in election in this area for the last two cycles or longer. Suozzi's victory is the outlier and he had a lot going for him.

The move toward the GOP has little to do with most of the hot political topics of late. The area is "rebelling" against the near strangle hold the Democrat party has on New York State. People are growing dissatisfied with rising costs and taxes and the decrease in the standard of living and they blame those who are in power (the Democrats).

the rising illegal immigrant crime wave is also a trend. But I'm sure it will stop now that you got a dem in that seat.

I heart NY!

It's interesting you should bring that up. The main focus of the race was on immigration. So this could be indicative that immigration isn't as galvanizing an issue as the GOP are hoping. I also know the were a few Republicans interviewed who said they voted against Pilip because of the GOP's refusal to bring immigration legislation to a vote in the House.

First McCarthy, and now Jordan, have given GOP candidates nothing to run on. They've passed no meaningful legislation and have instead decided to focus on spectacle hearings that go nowhere.

Then NY won't really mind another 500k illegals.
Maybe more will come, since District 3 doesn't object.

You seem to have a short memory.
What meaningful legislation did the Democrats pass when Trump was president?
There were dozens of manufactured spectacle hearings that went nowhere.

Your selective crocodile tears are a joke.

List of acts of the 116th United States Congress

It's no secret that the current Congress is on pace to be the least effective since the run-up to the Civil War.

Thanks goodness Bob Menendez is safe and sound, to possibly be that one last vote needed to beat the republicans.
The republicans gave up a seat because they aren't as smart as the democrats. Or believe their ethics and morals will somehow save them. Those things haven't worked yet. Maybe tomorrow.
Yes, I know exactly what I'm implying. I believe in fighting fire with fire. An eye, at least, for an eye.

Until the republicans figure this out, this country will continue it's slow boil, like the proverbial frog, into socialism/communism/totalitarianism.

The precedent set with Santos is that a member of Congress can't be expelled until they're convicted or the Ethics Committee recommends expulsion. So far, Menendez has not been convicted on the current charges and an ethics investigation has not been completed.
