Apparently I first registered 9-10-2004 but it seems like I was here before that. This was a great place, but for whatever reason I stopped coming.
When I checked in after a long absence, it had changed a lot, gotten off track. I had no idea there were issues with the ownership. Then my account
was nuked and I eventually gave up on reactivating it so here I am.
As for the domain expiration, there have been plenty of times I've waited for a domain to expire so I could scoop it up, and it almost always gets
renewed. I have lucked out with an auction, which would simply wait for the second your desired domain expired and buy it for you. There wasn't even
an extra charge at the time, but now the domain industry is broken. Expiration no longer means anything, as the registrar simply takes it over,
supposedly holding it to allow the lapsed owner to renew (usually with a nice penalty fee). Then they get sold in bulk and resold on domain reselling
sites. A site with this much traffic and longevity would fetch a pretty penny.
I don't see why Go Daddy wouldn't accept payment from a third party. As I recall, though, they have their own setup where they sell expired domains
(the creatively named
GoDaddy Auctions). It costs like $5 to join, and I did join, but I was unable to get what
I wanted.
Of course, it's the hosting that costs actual money, though.
