I guess living here and having had a reasonable degree of interaction with the family like I have, I'm of a different mind. Unless things have changed quite a bit over COVID, nothing in the story as told is wildly out of plausibility. The only thing is the media rush to paint it all racist.

We used to say
“Who’s there?”
And I’ve knocked on screen doors, opened them to knock on the entry door etc.
I was quite the young greeting card and garden seed salesman as a kid. Door to door.
They either answered, or they didn’t.
I don’t recall any old farts coming to door with a gun.
At least he was charged. There will be a trial.
If he’s guilty, 20 years. Even 2 years for that guy is a life sentence.
But, but, I was defending my palace, they say. From violence intruders, they say. I wuz skeered, they say...
Without even trying to understand the situation.
These people, and those who justify their behavior, are cowards .

If we are being honest, even Kyle didn't get a fair trial.
Luckily, enough facts were allowed to convince the jury that it was indeed self defense and that the states witness flubbed horribly.
This media frenzy of deciding guilt based on nothing is very troubling to anyone who prefers justice over mobs.

It's been done around here, and I've done it once or twice. It might be a regional or neighborhood thing, but you get better sound knocking on the interior door if you think they might not have heard the bell or it didn't work.

It depends on the situation and the day. For one thing, no one had school on Friday last week. So it was like they were over on a Friday night even though it was Thursday. In fact, our own kiddo was out at a friend's a bit past 10 that night as well. Are we bad parents? Yarl's siblings are 10; our's is 12. It's not that big a difference in age.

Odd that the use of cell phones hasn't been addressed.
If I went to pickup my siblings and I was 16, and they told me they would be outside waiting for me.
I would use the phone and stay in the car.
I do a lot of deliveries and in this modern era knocking on doors is not common for anyone who has a cell phone.

Rumor has it the kid addressed the old man as sir.
It was then the old man let him have it while exclaiming,
"It's ma'am,
Call me ma'am" pew...pew...
After charges were announced against Mr. Lester on Monday, Ben Crump and Mr. Merritt, lawyers representing the victim’s family, said in a statement that gun violence against unarmed Black individuals must stop. “Our children should feel safe, not as though they are being hunted,” they said.
“While this is certainly a step in the right direction, we will continue to fight for Ralph while he works toward a full recovery.”

According to one of the several stories, he forgot his phone. If that was me in his shoes, I'm going back for my phone or back to my house to call or have my mom call. I speak from experience.

I would blame whoever took him there.
