Flat earth, im sure there are many well meaning people who genuinely believe it. Flat earth also has a long history, although the globular earth model is also much older than most people realize. I do not think that Flat earthers are all glowies or paid shills, however...
I have noticed that flat earth has been wildly reported on by the media in recent years. And the movement has (probably because of that) boomed in popularity. Flat earth seems to be one of the fastest growing conspiracies out there. Why is there such a spotlight on this (in my opinion crackpot) theory?
I have discussed it with some of my more conspiratorial minded friends and we kind of concluded its a way for the media to portray all conspiracy theorists as crazy and to make everyone accept the couple of 'allowed' narratives. This is probably not a new thought and i would like to hear other peoples perspectives about it. Why do you think there is such a focus on flat earth theory? Is flat earth theory a false flag?

We must take this for consideration also,

many respected scientists and researchers among others have theorized that our reality might be a hologram, or an illusion of some sort.

What does that do to the presumed shape of the earth?

I mean we might actually be a projection on a two dimensional square for all we know.

Let that sink in.

This is why i have nothing against flat earthers, shake things up a bit, think outside the box and so on.

good luck with flat Earth theory

That's not what you wanted to say right?

Because I'm 99% certain the appearance looking from outside is spherical.

I'm certainly not at the point i could with 100% certainty say that's how it is, I have absolutely no first hand knowledge about the true geometry of the thing beneath my feet. I heard many storie with compelling arguments. For me believing is seeing. I'm really in awe with people that belive things without firsthand knowledge.

Good luck with whatever you choose to belive...

I think they even do Antarctic cruise ship trips now and have down for quite a while.

As to getting shot i would be more worried about the katabatic winds and dramatic temperatures to be honest if peeps did just decide to walk in to that wilderness.

Considering how much of the continent remains for all intents and purpose unexplored by man.

I believe what can be proven Terpene by science and facts.

Simple as that.

And science, never mind common sense and observation, tells us our Earth is not flat.

Some people actually believe in FE but I think a lot of them just want to pick an argument just for the sake of it.

So true OC!
Either way, there is close to zero % chance we are on a flat earth with a glass dome over our heads. More than zero and less than 1% is still a chance it is true. I just can't imagine why we would be on a flat earth based on the Physics I can observe and the people I grew up around who worked at NASA companies. Hollywood can do a lot of the pics NASA gives us, yes, but I would not at all like this if it turns out to be a mind F the whole time. It would be a shame if there isn't a great big Universe out there beyond our atmosphere.

Please don't get all of the Ball-Earthers in a tizzy.
They're so sure their elementary school teachers never lied to them.

You may have a point : if you're buzzing around yoobeloobe, viewing alternative material, there seems to always be FE vids pushed in the algorithm.

I deduced my timeline for homosapiens from Wikipedia... I thaught wiki is backed by the institution that promotes your religion.

When science deals with movement and infinity it doesn't make balls it makes toruses.

Flat earth has no decent arguments or arguers, they repeatedly lie, obfuscate and censor discussion to promote their delusion. It is an area full of grifters milking the stupid for their moneymaking scams.

There is a difference between you not understanding how images taken by satellites are made and lies.

I haven't looked into it enough to have seen the above grifting, mostly just watched the high altitude balloon stuff. However I have doubts about how NASA and other science agencies present their science with dodgy cgi at times then expect us to believe every last word. At least with the massive funding they get, they should be giving the public an accurate representation of the earth, not photoshopped willy nilly. In the modern era of computers, people can easily look back and see how much has been manipulated. I'd rather know that if an accurate photo cannot be taken, then that needs to be a disclaimer on all such composite imaging. If they feel the need to put a disclaimer on flat earth on youtube and wiki, then the same standards should apply to globe model in terms of discrepancy between reality and computer modelling. So much of science is done for tv shows nowadays and it's pretty far fetched, not the science itself, but the cgi.

Each to their own. I'll retain my skepticism for both flat and globe models until there is integrity in reporting over long periods of time.

The thing is Science relies on empirical evidence and observation to produce testable results where the data produced can be refined and questioned whereas religion relies on a leap of faith and unfaltering belief in God.

Science offers explanations and focuses on the physical universe whereas religion is more concerned with the supernatural.

One ideology is not exactly synonymous with the other although they can sometimes be complementary.

It's not my religion, science is the only tool we have at our disposal that will allow us to understand but a fraction of the universe and the reality that we exist within or think we do.

Point of fact also your religion would not have produced the communications medium we are now using to converse aka the internet, that was science.

If you need to keep calling science a religion all the same to make you feel comfortable, please continue, but they are not the same thing.

Science promotes free thought and experimentation whereas the other provides one-sided answers and commandments.

Science appears to be banning free thought.

I even know what time it is on that planet.

Some examples there might be nice to support that claim.

How does science ban anything?

Do you believe our Earth is flat Itisnowagain despite the evidence to the contrary?

I thought flat earth was crazy but started looking into it about seven years ago.

I thought flat earth was crazy but started looking into it and realised its beyond crazy.
Its one of the most inane, ridiculous things I've ever heard, it flies in the face of an absolute mountain of provable, scientific proof and evidence.

Each and every one of us can conduct our own experiments that prove beyond doubt the earth is in FACT round - to be exact its an irregular shaped ellipsoid.

To be fair; Flat earth can at times be a welcome distraction here on ATS and a source of amusement.

If anyone is interested here's a cool video of the 'true shape of the earth'.
vimeo.com...

Well there goes gravity for a start.

Also, it might be nice to know how all the satellites manage to orbit a flat plane.

The problems associated with nonsense flat Earth theory could fill a fecking skip.

Yeah, there's an absolute mountain of scientific evidence that has been proven beyond doubt.

I know there are lots of gaps in our scientific knowledge, but the shape of this piece of rock isn't one of them.

Flat earth does prove a welcome distraction from the doom and gloom of Ukraine/Russia, Trump/Biden and the inane and embarrassing nature of UK politics at present.
And it does bring about a wry smile to my face at times.

Mind this poor sausage that attempted to prove the Earth was flat and went into the ground like a dart.

I actually felt sorry for the fool as i don't imagine it would be a nice way to meet his end.
