A vegan woman convicted of murder in the malnutrition death of her young son was sentenced Monday to life in prison.

Sheila O’Leary, 38, whose family followed a strict vegan diet, was convicted in June on six charges — first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter, child abuse and two counts of child neglect — in the death of Ezra O’Leary. Her sentencing in Lee County, Florida, had previously been postponed four times.

Her husband, Ryan Patrick O’Leary, remains in jail while awaiting trial on the same charges.

The background links indicate this is much bigger and uglier than idiots malnourishing their children, including sexual abuse by the father. The child who died had eaten nothing for a week. He wasn't just malnourished, he was literally starved to death.

Idiots that have no clue how a vegan diet works, is plenty of substitutes high protein and fats that can be given to babies, but this self-appointed idiot's matter experts think they know it all.

I hope she rots in jail where she belongs along with her idiot husband, never to procreate again.

So will this standard be applied in other areas? I know people who are raising their children to be "gender neutral". Will they be charged with child abuse because of psychological issues that may arise? How about parents who agree with the mutilation of a child's body in the name of "Gender choice"?

The thing that irritates me the most about vegans is they aren’t just anal about what they put in their own body. They are judgmental MOFOS about what everyone else puts in their bodies.

Many vegetables have anti-nutrient properties. Kids need nutrition. If that mother's mind is so skewed by her beliefs, she should be required to get psychological help and she needs to put a little time into jail at a minimum. She is delusional and for some people certain veggies can lead to severe delusion if consumed...plant defense chemistry can screw some people up.

This has nothing to do with a vegan diet but starvation and dehydration.

There's 80 million vegans - you can absolutely raise vegan children.

RAW is the key word here. Most vegans don't follow a RAW diet because its a bit extreme and poses health risks. It is eating unprocessed foods without cooking them or at low heat.

It just takes research and understanding on the parent's part. This lady was doing alot of things wrong including the baby being literally starved as other posters pointed out.

Veganism isn't a cult. Its a lifestyle that embraces the philosophy of not using unneeded animal products. Therefore, if babies or toddlers have a rare condition that makes it dangerous to eat vegan then its perfectly acceptable to eat non-vegan.

Veganism is considered to be a safe and healthy form of diet at all stages in life by most dieticians.
