"the former is mostly based on ignorance of the CONTEXT and geography of the case, unaware that the photographer was hiding at the time, looking upwards."

Speaking of ignorance, we have no idea if that's true. It's a second hand story. Reality is we have no idea what the photographer was doing, and for some reason he isn't talking. Probably because he fears his story will fall apart with further questioning.

Good point, ccppc. We must separate Nick Pope's imagination from the actual facts as originally presented.

Embellishments (hello Rendlesham) Vs Original Facts - one reason why ufology in general is in such a mess these days - which I have possibly just unwittingly contributed to!

Diamond shape. Check.

Hovering. Check.

Humming Sound. Check.

On the evening of April 5, 2012, over the Costa Mesa area of California, a motorist reportedly saw a diamond-shaped object hovering about a mile away from him. In his report filed with the Mutual UFO Network, or MUFON, he also claims to have heard a humming sound emanating from the object

www.huffingtonpost.co.uk...

The "humming" may be another detail that stems from Nick Pope's imagination rather than the original reports - a trap I seemed to easily fall into, too!

We both need to follow my own advice and go back to the original NON-classified files (the 'top secret' notion being yet another Pope-ism since only the two witnesses' names remain classified for another 50 years).

Nevertheless, Pope still insists he can neither confirm nor deny that the photo is the same as the one next to his 'UFO desk' [sic]. What a plonker.

Aliens are just advanced humans that come from another planet some 50,000 years ago.

We're in an endless cycle, advance civilisations have come and gone, advanced civilisations under occult control just like today.

I love it, but to me looks like a blimp, an alternative kind of blimp.

every time i look at this i see early stealth programs.

heck one looked almost identical to it, add fly by wire to the hopeless diamond and a regular chap taking a picture on the moors and presto we have a UFO

you can practically see the inlets like on the F117

be interesting to see what nick pope says

Thats why they dont tend to fly secret stuff in daylight.. you can infer design origin /mission profile based on how it looks..

Completely agree with you though- this looks exactly like what you might expect to see outputted by LM's Echo 1 in the late 70's.

Now I think back....there was a fairly credible rumour about how only 2 craft were able to operate over downtown Bahgdad in the early days of Operation Desert Shield (also around the time of this alleged pic.)

One was the Nighthawk...the other was pure "avert your eyes/wear these foggles" territory and was alleged to specialise in long endurance, low observability scenarios.

We did it to death in aviation a while ago in context of Quartz/AARS speculation.
Think it also came up in various "sensorcraft" discussion as well.

Yes, your data seems correct. But bear in mind the exact phrasing about the picture is it was taken approximately at 09:00 pm, which, technically, means the sun was setting or about to set or even set. In all three possible cases you don't have such a bright sky as the one the picture shows. But I'll tell you more, granted the picture is not high quality, yet we can perform an analysis about the exact time it was really taken by simply scanning the bright gradient of the sky, which gives you the position of the sun and its altitude at the moment the photograph was taken.

If you watch the picture carefully, you'll notice the sky is brighter to the left, hence the left of the photograph would be your West (which is where the sun sets).

Thanks for the photo! When was that one taken?

Or it might be the case the photograph was taken in 2022, and not in 1990.

From the article you linked:

On August 4, 1990, two young men were working as chefs in a hotel in Pitlochry, just outside the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland. At 9pm, after a long day in a hot kitchen, they drove about 13 miles north along the A9 to Calvine, a spot on the edge of the Cairngorms, for a walk in the hills. They hadn't gone far when they saw a huge, solid, diamond-shaped object. Minutes later, they heard the scream of a jet aircraft going north The jet came back and circled the 'thing' before heading off on its original course. Eventually the two men stuck their camera out from where they were hiding and fired off six frames.

So, the two guys ended shift at 09:00pm and decided to go for a walk in the hills, even when they knew the sun was about to set (at 09:21 pm). And they drove some 13 miles (20 Km). How long does it take to travel 13 miles on a mountain road? By all accounts, the boys arrived at the site late at night. And they didn't take the picture around 09:00pm. At 09;00 pm is when they finished their shift at the hotel.

Something does not add up.

Sorry, it does not. The one you show in your artistic recreation picture is just a bright blimp. Look here:

Bright Blimps of the 90s

Look at what it says: “Some people saw a disc. Some people saw a diamond-shaped object,” said Lt. Robert Rivas of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, which received about 50 calls about “UFO sightings” between 7:30 and 9 p.m.

Those bright blimps were common in the 90s.

Pope says photos - the MoD boffins had the 6 negatives available not just the one print, some of the others may have allowed a better judge of size.

Nice job!

Are you familiar with AI Upscaling?

I saw it mentioned on twitter yesterday.
Id like to see those results - even though they would not assist in any scientific analysis, it would still be interesting to see what it comes up with.

A blimp without a passenger car for flight crew ?

I have never seen one.

The half jokey stealth blimp nomenclature is used due to how it looks- not because it shares flight characteristics with dirigibles/blimps.

Think exotic propulsion - not LTA.

One of the things that keeps me interested in UFO reports is that as stealth technology evolved - "UFO's" seemingly followed the trend.

Sightings in the 80's and 90's - faceted diamond "UFO's" (for e.g Calvine,Cash/Landrum, Rendelsham).
90's/00's - Boomerang/Deltas/Tri "UFO's."

Thanks for the photo! When was that one taken?

Earlier this year.

...So, the two guys ended shift at 09:00pm and decided to go for a walk in the hills, even when they knew the sun was about to set (at 09:21 pm). And they drove some 13 miles (20 Km). How long does it take to travel 13 miles on a mountain road?

They aren't ''mountain roads', B Roads would be the correct term to use. It would take about 15-20 mins in the evening to leave Pitlochry to where the supposed photo was taken (Struan).

By all accounts, the boys arrived at the site late at night. And they didn't take the picture around 09:00pm. At 09;00 pm is when they finished their shift at the hotel.

There are various stories floating around. One tale is that the pair were 'poaching' and about to take a snap of their prey when the object appeared.

The timelines seem tight, very tight. But maybe not impossible, as Britain does have a long twilight period before the sun goes down completely during the summer.

Perhaps to satisfy your own curiosity, go to the Pitlochry webcam here around 21:00 BST (20:00 UTC) today: www.pitlochrywebcam.co.uk...

Then you can view what the place really looks like around this time of the year. Bearing in mind that sunset is around 20-25 mins earlier now than it would be at the start of August when the picture was taken.

Something does not add up.

Yes. We don't really know if the photograph was taken in the place and at the times claimed. I've never seen any witness statement first hand. Just others relating their story.
