The line. A city to be constructed in the Saudi desert.

THE LINE, will be only 200 meters wide, 170 kilometers long and 500 meters above sea level. THE LINE will eventually accommodate 9 million residents and will be built on a footprint of 34 square kilometers

The project was announced by Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince and Chairman of the Board of NEOM.

It has been estimated with a starting cost around 500 billion.

No cars, no roads. There will be a high speed rail which will carry you from end to end in 20 minutes. It is climate controlled.

The city will be powered on renewable energy.

This is the most modern dystopian design I can remember seeing. You are to live within the walls. Everything will be man made or designed. There is no outside that wall.

The project is already under way with a projected completion date of 2030.

I’m sure the law will be strict within The Line.

The Line. Future city.

A prison , basically. There is 'no outside' as nobody will be allowed to leave or breathe.
Still, you can rest assured that the usual supporters of everything dystopian that only benefits the 1%ers will be here shortly

I imagine there will be curfews.

A saudí walled prison city.

What can possibly go wrong?

It’s like the first step before a ringworld is deployed in space.

But it’s not in space. It’s in the beautiful S.A desert.

The linear metropolis’s layout will offer all of the residents’ daily needs within a five-minute walk,

Except to a pub.

Also, it's curious to consider that they'd pick the absolutely most inefficient shape to build anything. totally stoopid idea if you ask me.

What's telling about the pictures is that the trees on the top are alive and green, but the trees inside the walls are dying and brown. Can we all guess the economic status of which people live where in the wall?

Back in the early days of that region, walled cities were common.

It's not like this is a new concept, it's just updated with modern technology.

It's not for everyone, but some people might be comfortable there for whatever reason.

Remember Jericho?

Imagine living in a walled, crapped city like this that KSA is planning on making.

All Autonomous on the inside.
Flying skates, drones bringing you deliveries.

This is a Dystopian, nightmarish city worse if they force people to live there.

To build such a structure from 1 rail line alone is going to be a logistical nightmare. Gives the appearance a lot of the manufacturing process is going to be automated. Sounds more like the worlds biggest jail to be so isolated. Would expect it to get pretty nuts as well if 9 million are locked in. The worlds biggest human battery farm. As for just what specific parts are being farmed?

Those picture look like they are straight from that movie. I bought that DVD from the Walmart discount bin thinking it would be a good SciFi flick. It was OK, but disappointing for me, kind of lame really, then again not bad for $5. I would have been really disappointed if I paid theater prices to go see it once.

Oh no the Saudis are improving our concept of gated communities, quick screem how nightmarish it must be. I guess you are speaking from experiences...

That is hopeful of where it could go.

With the whole structure based around one rail line for transport, could also go underground in one of the tubes linking up the DUMBS. That would suck.

New innovations in city planning require massive investments or some new technology usually. I guess good on them for throwing money at things?

It's not like anyone is coming up with anything new anyways. Skinny towers and more tunnels isn't exactly an appealing future either. I don't think cities are going to become unpopular anytime soon.
