The uncomfortable truth is that our society and culture is sick and broken

Unfortunately you are right. With the news that schools must allow some boys to enter girl's washrooms is another example of this issue.

Even if you armed the teachers there are problems.

Even with proper training, some people freeze in the moment.

These are teachers, not soldiers.

Even some new recruits panic in the heat of the moment and fire too high or not at all.

A civilian who isn't "into" firearms might have a hard time navigating the realities of weapons.

IMO

IF there were to be an effort to arm teachers, it should in no way be forced or foisted. All applicable laws apply as well as a psych screen. Concealment would need to be of the highest priority.

Hell, even typing this out, it doesn't sound like a terribly great idea. However, dead children sound much, MUCH worse.

I heard somewhere that there are retired veterans offering to be security guards.

Much better option IMHO.

They're already primarily trained for such contingencies.

Seems like the most obvious choice.

So obvious that one has to wonder why it hasn't been enacted after 20 years of this.

I always wondered after the 9/11 attacks when, instead of the TSA making us take our shoes off and prohibiting waterbottles, they didn't just assign a trained Marine or two to every flight.

I mean, it would probably be boring as all getout for the Marines but at least they'd be there to disarm any idiot terrorists with a boxcutter.

IIRC they did have air marshals for awhile.

Would be mass shooters choose venues that have little to no pushback. Stop making those spaces so vulnerable.

This is going to sound absolutely nuts and I've never confessed it onsite but it's well known on site that I'm Schizoaffective.

One of my primary delusions is that I'm assigned "Watch Duty".

I go to the same place everytime the voices tell me to, (the local bookstore shopping center), and have a coffee, read a book and keep tabs for suspicious activity in the parking lot. I've been "instructed" to immediately report anything suspicuous to the local police.

I know that sounds insane, but it's a very real thing for me.

I'd get into some heavy details of living with condition for twenty years and a ton of MKULTRA like scenarios I've been through and deal with, but I don't have any definitive proof, just stories. It's a very "advanced" delusion.

The day of the school shooting I had been suffering from insomnia and was told that I was on Watch because another operative like me in the area had been awake for several days and it was my turn to stay up an be alert so he could finally get some sleep.

So I went to the bookstore and did the usual routine.

When I got home an heard the news I was devestated and I immediate thought the kid had been activated somehow.

I know that sounds nuts, but some of my voices have been suggesting I get a gun and body armor to "up my game".

There is no way in hell I'm doing that.

FIrst of all, I'm a pacifist. I couldn't morally kill someone, even if my life (or someone elses) was in danger.

Also I don't want to be too comfortable with firearms in case my meds give me an adverse reaction and the next thing I know I'm patroling the streets like an idiot and get shot by law enforcement.

It's why I backed out of the National Guard sign up at the last minute, because I would have to undergo firearms training.

I'm trying to write a book about it, and I know I've derailed the thread somewhat and I apologize.

But it's possible this kid was influenced by subtle forces, and the copycats that have been popping up since the event.

The problem with focusing on mental illness as an indicator of fitness for gun ownership is multi-faceted, but for starters, as has already been mentioned several times, is that mental fitness or illness is ambiguous to say the least. It ebbs and flows with popular culture.

There was a time when thinking you should have been born the opposite sex would have landed you in an exorcism or a mental institution. Now you're just part of the movement and there are laws to protect you.
You believe the earth is flat? No gun for you.
You post on ATS. Absolutely no gun for you.
So who determines mental fitness?
Another problem with pinning mental fitness to gun ownership is that not everyone who should be tested for mental fitness will be. There will always be exceptions. Yes, I'm talking about you Joe, and that's just for starters.

I read a short article recently that made some good common sense points...

We have armed guards around politicians, celebrities, court houses, jewelry stores, and banks. I’ve never heard the left complain about any of that. But the idea of guarding our children is a non-starter. Strange.

Per Chucky Schumer.

Instead, the left seems to think we can pass laws that will somehow miraculously compel people to obey existing laws. I’ve given up trying to wind my way through that “logic.”

Remember gun free zones?

And this is one of those folks who will never be tested for mental fitness.

In the 80's, as part of negotiations for Reagan's financial reforms, Democrats demanded that all mental asylums be closed down. All but the most dangerous, criminally insane mental defectives were released to the public. We're talking a minimum of 10's of thousands, I've read estimates of upwards of 300k. I'm fairly certain that many of them procreated, some with other unstable individuals. The United States has literally been breeding insanity bringing societal shift to where we are now. Two, going on three generations in and we sit around wondering what's changed in the last 30 years. We've propagated crazy and society and the policies that govern it.

Americans have been a sick country post-ww2. Most of the school shooters happen because of the way our communities are built. Youth are dependent on parents for basic means of functioning in society due the Automotive. Only time they're able to gain independence is with a learners permit where in contrast Japanese parents have their 6 year olds walk to the local grocery to pick up an item such as a small package of tomatoes as an assignment.

www.theatlantic.com...

In a country like Denmark you don't need an expensive car to be part of society such as going to hobby clubs, dates outside of school, and after-school functions. Incels are a thing because of bull# school peer pressure where 1 flirting mistake is fatal to one's bull# school reputation.

Often the incels are neglected so they have zero social life outside of school.

What's worse is that the communities that manufacture the BS in America are bankrupt & rely on constant growth with new developing paying for past & recently built developments. These new developments are designed in a way that they can't generate enough of a tax base to maintain their current & future infrastructure such as sewage & water main maintenance work or new sub-stations.

America's communities are disposable boom towns. Nobody is moving to Texas because it has a lovely geographic setup & nice weather. They're only moving to Texas because it's a boom town like ND during the fracking boom that was built on massive debt.

Once the Texan bubble bursts these communities that are saddled with municipal debt are in deep Sh*t. America's boom town mentality doesn't develop healthy community roots where people know each other. The Kids move out to the next boom state & town & dump their parents in a retirement home that they rarely visit because the jobs are on the other side of the country.

Felons can't get guns (or vote) either.

Ever. Even after their "debts" are paid.

Not true.

I have quite a few friends who were felons.

They did their time, paid their fees, and have guns and vote.

Most of whom, including myself, who live in Tennessee.

The mental health part of it applies if you were involuntarily committed to a mental ward.

That's what abjudicated means. When someone else makes the decision for you.

You're usually still able to purchase firearms if you've voluntarily checked yourself in.

Though, depending on the circumstance of the diagnosis and reasons for checking yourself in can go from voluntary to involuntary.

They should have pepper spray. The shooter can't shoot you if he can't see you. Or well.... not as easily.

Although it is possible in theory, I don't worry about anybody murdering anybody with pepper spray.

I don't think "clownworld" is a separate place from this dimension.

Every dimension has to have its own theme, right? We found ours!!!

Maybe we should arm the teachers with banana cream pies.

There is a pretty big gap between being adjudicated or committed and simply seeking help. However, the real issue is depression. That will be the one they use for the next big gun grab. I don't know if you have noticed but starting in the obama years doctors offices started asking about depression during normal office visits for other things. Simple questions like, 'Have you ever been depressed or felt like you needed to talk to someone about depression?" If you ever said yes, that went into your medical record. When depression becomes a disqualifying standard the record search will be quick and easy. And anyone with that simple comment in their record is now ineligible to own a firearm.

On a side not, you are not required to answer those questions unless your visit was actually for depression or something related. It should also be noted that searching for or requesting that data constitutes a gross violation of hipaa protections but I suspect that will fall by the wayside in favor of the agenda.

To clarify, HIPAA contains no prohibition of asking a person about any aspect of their medical history (your doctor sort of needs to know that sort of stuff but it is up to you whether or not to provide answers). It does include prohibitions against transmitting such information to a third party without the person's expressed authorization.
