My father was in a union; he retired with a pensions that was three quarters his last years salary; my mom will get 1/2 that pension when he dies. They also get full medical benefits for life.

Its my understanding is that the union doesn't do so well for the current generation doing the same job. They require current workers to pay into their own pension and medical and they won't be making nearly as much when they retire and no more for life medical.

Unions do far more good than bad; I’ve worked in nonunion places and union places and unions are needed for the most part. It protects workers from a lot of abuses, from requiring a hearing in cases of a firing, to wages, work conditions, vacations, management abuses, and many more areas where the company can run amuck on their employees if not checked by a union.
It’s a democratic institution needed as a balance of power over the employees.
Of course, there not perfect, tell me any human institution that is?

As for these amazon workers, good for them.

Also want to add, we need to get away from “oh we did that before and it did’t work so we can’t try again” mentality.
Healthcare is a perfect example. Just doing nothing isn’t working either.

It all depends. My company's health care is free to employees and low cost for adding family, and all non-union. This doesn't mean the whole cost umbrella doesn't suck when you look at it from the outside. We really need to do what just about every other country does and that provides very cheap out-of-pocket healthcare for 80% of what we would call health maintenance and routine care.

If you’re anti union, you’re anti America.

It really is that simple.

Lol OK.... Show me where a union works today and I'll say OK there is one, but they are overall just another bureaucracy element in the machine that slows everything down, increases prices, rewards mediocrity, prevents growth, and stifles competition on many levels.

Sounds a lot like socialism...lol

Steamfitters union. Plumbers union. Electricians union.

Three right off the top of my head.

Whatcha got little guy?

Leave it to good little fascist whores to call worker representation “socialism”.

Collective bargaining is socialism; but who says socialism is always a bad thing.

You don’t really understand the definition of socialism, huh

The most obvious answer is to recognize that some jobs are intended to be entry level/part time/first jobs... not careers. As such, you're going to receive minimum wage and have your ass worked off in those jobs but that's intended to motivate the young worker to want something better, get an education, have an idea and act on it, etc.

Unions, as an "answer" to the problem of workplace abuse and income theft makes about as much sense as open promiscuity as an "answer" to the problem of rape.

Young people today want every job to be a living wage, so I guess they can be head fryer at BK their whole life and put 3 kids through school, buy a house and live that American dream cooking french fries for the next 50 years.

When I ask just what does "living" means as in what is the actual cost you need to spend for that living wage they have no clue, but I suspect 14 Iced Chai Tea Lattes a week are part of the deal as to what one needs to live on...lol

The guy who owns bk makes it on the backs of his workers. Why should they not make a living wage?

Seems some of you love the idea of a corporate feudalism

Being anti union is like being a whore who lets the John decide her price.

I think once the deed is done the John should be able to rate the experience and pay accordingly in a perfict world, don't you?

I bet when a kid comes to your house and says I'll mow your lawn, but its 200 bucks you just say ....Well OK seems a little high, but hey that is your price...lol

I just don’t have an axe to gring when it comes to unionization. They have their good aspects and their bad aspects. Anyone arguing absolutes on the topic is woefully incorrect.

Socialism is economic theory of social organization ... like for Collective bargaining.

You’re missing the point. I never said unions were perfect.

You same people who bitch about the evil government would then let them have full control over workers rights.

And that, my friend, is called being a whore.

Actually, unions came about because of no Government oversite, now there is and unions as a whole have been obsolete for a very long time. I say this knowing that unions at one time played a very important role in worker rights.

They're also the first ones to squeal like a pig stuck under a gate when prices rise to cover their recently demanded "living wage." Instead of demanding a "living wage" (that will always serve as a temporary boon quickly followed by finding yourself in a worse financial position than you started in as the market adjusts to your newfound windfall) most of these folks should be seeking a "living education on microeconomics" that has clearly been absent in their public education. Public education: an industry totally dominated by union workers... huge shock that those union workers refuse to educate kids on the facts of economics, isn't it?

“Obsolete”. Because we all trust the government and corporations to do right by the worker, yeah?

The irony.

No it is not obvious. In a not so distant past a janitor could work hard and provide for his family, buy a house and have a little retirement. That is a joke now. That same person would have to work three jobs and hope they never get ill.

The medium pay for a janitor is 31,000 a year..kind of a bad profession to pick since pretty much zero skill is involved.
