Impossible for me to name one best or even favorite.

Gattaca (1997) - my kids would agree with you
Dark city (1998) - somebody did a thread on this ... really good movie ... don't regret buying the director's cut on Amazon

Adding these to my watch list: (Thanks!!)

The Thirteenth Floor (1999)
Serenity (2005)
Children of Men (2006)
6 Underground

I really liked the Cowboys too, one of Wayne's best performances, Bruce Dern just plays that sleazy cowboy to perfection.

The acting had to be above par for the movie to make my list.

I could never 'trust' Bruce Dern again after that role. After what he did to The Duke, I'm surprised he could land another Hollywood role.

LOL

Brings to mind another phenomenal talent: Bill McKinney (Deliverance)

One is only a true Tolkien fan when they have read The Silmarillion from front to back at least twice .
I have that badge of honor .
There was a bit of lore breaking in the movies .

Anyone ever done a thread on why Tom Bombadil was cut out of his role for the Silver Screen?

Amazingly Ive never watched any of the Lord of the Rings movies, I always meant to read the stories and then watch the movies and just never did either. Fantasy was always a category I have to be in the right mood to enjoy and it's hard for it to capture my attention and imagination sometimes.

It is a deep deep hole. In second grade, I read Tolkien's books out loud in the playground. It changed lives.

it also had one of the best fist fights of any movie of it's era

Probably outside the class of fist fight, but one of my all-time favorite bar fight scenes ...

I would say his character doesn't really tie in with the quest... even though he meets the hobbits a couple times in the story... those parts aren't in the movie anyways. Bombadil doesn't have any real explanation as to what or who he is... he just sort of appears when they need him and then buggers off...

Same goes for glorifindal... he was replaced by Arwen in the movies

I bought the extended versions ... on the off-chance. LOL

The effort of writing back then was much different than the style of today. Authors made an effort to communicate with their readers. Someone told me once, the Bombadil character came out of Tolkien's personal experiences ... more than an Easter Egg (of sorts).

You should see the sword purported to belong to him, it's almost as tall as me, and i'm no shrimp.

I know a lot of people across the pond haven't seen the movie, despite it's historical inaccuracies, it's one hell of a film.

Personally I have to say, both Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch are up there with the very best of the best.
I love a good war film, The Great Escape, Von Ryan's Express and of course Saving Private Ryan are outstanding.
Enemy at the Gate is fantastic.
All of the LOTR films and Avatar.
I could watch Passport to Pimlico over and over and over again.
Star Wars are great and I really enjoyed all the new Star Trek movies and Close Encounters is exceptional.
Guardians of the Galaxy is brilliant as is Deadpool. (Anything Marvel is good in my book).

But my favourite all time movie is without doubt - and this may surprise some - Independence Day.
I just love watching it.
No particular reason other than that.

Yea it's weird, and I used to read a wide variety of topics even as a little kid and knew of LOTR. No time like the present, I'll just have to decide book or movie first?

The books were phenomenal and have withstood the test of time. The movies were likewise epic. That said, when Tolkien's spell has taken hold of you ... you won't need video. Recommendations: Hardcover set (you'll want to keep these forever) and a fancy bookmark to keep your place.

Get ready for a little sleep deprivation ... -chuckle- ... and see you back on the boards again in a few weeks.

I will watch Dr. Srangelove or.............
youtu.be...

youtu.be...

Anytime Dr. Strangelove is on, I will drop everything and watch. Peter Sellers is a genius. The cast is amazing and the B-52 interior was amazingly done.

Orrrr.... Runner up for me, but Mel Brooks always makes me laugh.
History of the World Part One.

For a thread about best movies, there seems to be an incredible lack of mention of Akira Kurosawa‘s films.

Just saying…

Personally i would watch the movies first...

they lack the detail, but when i read the books i can hear the actors voices in my head...lol

plus you appreciate the detail that the movies left out after watching them
