The whole concept is ignorant. Like pistols at 5 paces. Both shoot, but get hit, both die, neither one wins. And this is 2022 for those keeping score. regression at it's finest.

I like that "pistols at five paces".

But let me build a scenario that makes my question a bit more relevant.

Two opponents still holding pistols on one another at the described five paces, but in this scenario one of the the gunslingers also holds in his other hand a "dead-man switch" connected to a load of TNT that will destroy a schoolhouse full of innocent townspeople.

Now, the the guy with the gun and the switch shoots first, thinking he has an advantage.

The question becomes, does the other guy, in his last moments before dying, return fire, serving "just desserts" to his killer, but also blowing a town full of innocent citizens to kingdom come?

Or does he hold his fire and "take one for Humanity"?


I think you can understand how this scenario might apply to the current state of affairs.

Ummm…perhaps for you…however…I would go down a separate path…

As I stated earlier in the thread…I’ve already lived through diving under my desk during the bombing drills in the sixties when I was in school…

There are certainly better ways to lead…than those being exhibited by our government and institutions…and those in Europe…

This present situation is entirely on their heads…

I would have shut the eastward expansion of NATO down…and cut off it’s head…just like President Trump tried to do…

I would have held honest and ongoing cross table discussions with Russia…rather than humiliating them at every turn…

Honest and open discussions…and slowly brought them into alliance…and partnership…
instead…we have the US and Europe doing their damndest to turn them into a pariah state…another North Korea…

And driving them into the welcoming arms of the CCP…

They could have been our ally…we could have had honest and mutually beneficial cooperation…in all areas of interaction…

Now…it’s Russia and China…partnering…

What a bunch of feckless shortsighted fools that lead the west…I hope they all choke on their hubris…

All this talk about the eastward expansion of NATO is nonsense.

Aside from Turkey (which became a member in the early 1950s, by the way), all NATO countries are entirely North America and Europe - exactly as you would expect.

Australia, New Zealand, and Japan are not members when one might reasonably expect them to be.

Nor, interestingly, are several European countries, like Finland, which borders Russia.

Several former Warsaw Pact countries have become members since the break up of the Soviet Union, but so what?

It occupied half of Europe for 40 odd frigging years but I don't recall anyone complaining about the westward expansion of the Soviet Union.

So should you be afraid? NO. You should spend exactly ZERO seconds worrying about Nuclear war.

I'm not afeared. I was taught that hiding under a desk with a large book over your head will protect you.

And I know the power of books, and large desks.

In all honesty, I'd just like time enough at last warning to be able to hike to the top of the local mountain and watch the detonation as it happens over the nearest city.

That really depends on if you have fair warning.

If you know it's coming, you just get under some sturdy furniture, curl up and put your hands over your neck.

That way the survivors can count the dead easier.
