Here in the suburbs of Chicago I check a regional chain- full schedule.

Then I checked AMC and yep starting Jan 7th only the 355 is showing.

I'm wondering if it's just AMC? They are going through some really bad financial times and maybe their credit was cut-off after the start of the new year? Or maybe it's the start of a new contract for their suppliers?

They could be cutting back on new releases to keep crowds down but I think we would be seeing mass cancellation of events in other places too. The Chicago auto show is going on and that's like a million people in two rooms.

My local 14 screen theater was ONLY offering 355 from the 7th forward.

Sometime in the past few hours their website also added 'private showings' for up to 20 guests. Movie isn't specified, but run length matches 355 to the minute, and is available for nearly every time slot on most of their screens.

It's starting to look like maybe theater chains got advance warning of joe's secret nationwide lockdown plans starting around the 6th?

I got curious and just checked theaters in two former home towns in different states, and they still have a full slate of movies beyond the 7th.

Weird.

Seems like pockets across the country, but not quite the whole country.

I'm in the UK which makes it all the more weirder.

I checked another local multiplex and it also has no listings for the 7th and beyond.

Maybe many theater companies share some kind of cloud service provider for their websites that is having difficulties right now?

Just another guess.

AMC stock is falling again. Over the past year, it's been as high as $72 and as low as $2 a share. Now it's at $26 and heading south.

It's about making money, yes but it's also about using what another Federal agency, the FCC, auctioned to Verizon and AT&T. The two carriers paid out tens of billions, I want to say US$70B in order to access the C-band frequencies. They need that ROI, and they're not going to get it from CV subsidies or kickbacks.

Just adding in my area that the theater has normal listings through the 6th. Starting on the 7th the only listings are 355 and Private Movie Party.

This is Harkins not a AMC.

WTF!

I thought maybe this was just a glitch with some mega-chain. So, I checked one of the small independent movie houses in my city and they have ZERO movies playing on 1/7 (a Friday), a full slate leading up to it, only Rocky Horror on the 8th and nothing else til the 21st, which is just one film and another years old one, at that.

Damn,

Sounds like a test to see how people react to knowing they only have limited options.

Next they'll be Rationing off bread and milk.

Hmmmm.... Rations.

Edit:
hoooooooo Boy🤔

Also this movie!!!

How can you post this pic without a source? I hope it's just a theory or you just forgot?

In the UK also, and can confirm this (Odeon & Vue anyway).

I'm a regular cinema goer and this is a little odd, normally you can book up seats weeks in advance, but everything stops after Thursday at Vue & Odeon cinemas.

Cineworld seems to be the only one taking bookings after Thursday, though a big gap with first booking available on 14th Jan for Scream only, nothing else.

Theatre (as in stage plays etc) bookings seems normal though, for the more discerning posters here

Wtf? I’m in the uk and just checked the listings for Odeon Cinema, and all the booking dates between the 6th and 13th are greyed out. You can start booking again from the 14th.
😐

I’ve skim read this thread as I’m at work. Do we have a good theory why this is happening yet?

Many thanks
