I made a really tasty snack bread loaf that probably runs a small fortune at a bakery.
We collected walnuts from our black walnut trees, hulled them, hose-rinsed the crap out of them, and then hung them to dry for 10 weeks. My kids
shelled them the other night, with hammers (nut crackers work on the English walnuts, not these, too tough)
They were extremely pleased to present us with at least 4 cups of nut meat (that don't sound right...)
4 CUPS.
Thats a lot of pricy nut meat (that still dont sound right)
I got to looking atound at some of our dried snacking fruits -- apples? Nah, too cliche. Raisins? Nah, we like just raisins in raisin bread.
Cranberries? Also cliche, but a maybe. Blueberries? Definitely maybe! Cherries?
Cherries...
And thus, we have a Black Walnut & Cherry loaf. Technically, it's French Vanilla Black Walnut & Cherry, since i didnt have a real alternative for
dairy milk powder on hand (hubs is allergic) & used hubs' french vanilla creamer as a substitute.
It's pretty goddamn awesome. Especially with a bit of the homemade vanilla icing i made spread on it. Thats some decadent stuff right there
