So, we've been trying to learn to like squash as a winter staple, but it's...going slowly. Turns out, none of us like the same squashes < scratches
head >
But we can all agree on one thing, whether we're even aware of it or not -- acorn squash makes an EXCELLENT puree substitute for pumpkin in pies.
Nobody knew the difference
For anyone interested, it's
just this recipe divided into two pie pans. And, uh, I
suck at crusts, so I got pre-mades. Worked fine though!
Aside from making the puree, I also added half teaspoon of ginger instead of the whole teaspoon it calls for, and a half teaspoon of allspice, plus
1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg. It's more of an outright spiced pie that way, not just "pumpkin" spice
Edit: And a tablespoon of vanilla extract!
The mix didn't taste right until I added vanilla extract.
We're going to see if we can make a lightly mocha-flavored version later this afternoon
