Meh, it is what it is. It's everywhere. Any public forum has it. Just learn to look for the tactics used and do the best thing you can do.

Don't feed the trolls.

Seriously, just don't engage them. Don't answer their posts, don't respond.

Back in the days in certain forums, troll threads would get spidermanned to death.

Just literally, don't engage trolls. If nobody answers them, they go away.

There's trolls on both sides of the political spectrum on ATS. I've watched whole threads where the trolls fight amongst themselves. Just learn to watch for such low quality # and don't engage it.

It's like having an annoying sibling that won't shut the # up. Like your parents would have said, just ignore them they just want attention.

I understand what you are talking about, but having an invite only forum might leave out someone who would have otherwise positively contributed to the thread.

That's fine and dandy if it works for someone that way, but you know it's not going to work well enough to rely on. The way I see it is this way:

ATS is like a nice HOA neighborhood most residents are reasonably happy with the rules of. But the HOA board won't allow new remodeling work to allow for soundproofing of homes. It makes no sense and is a dopey rule, but EVERYONE is told to suck it up and just ignore Bob and Peggy's nuisance house with their kid's crappy garage cover band practicing at all hours (this would be the parallel for the nuisance poster)

So, keeping that in mind, it's not really a defensible position to refuse "soundproofing" if one wants it.

We could get into my thoughts behind this, but we'd be getting into topics involving the motivations behind the ownership and management that are ironically forbidden from being talked about on here.

Or at least they were at one point many years ago, dunno if the rules on that have loosened over the years or not.

Which is why I suggested members could request to join. For exactly the reason you stated. Lots and I mean lots of wise members on ATS.

I've been getting those calls for months. I said what it was and stated a fact : past two Presidents were going to fix that issue.

You obviously were in the thread. Did you not notice what I was referring to regarding the pointless comments?

I don't see how my comment thread drifted or was off topic but if YOU do then when you have a moment please let me know. Thanks.

It's telemarketing assholes in foreign lands.

And Obama and Trump were supposed to get this shullbit under control.

Joek...well I really don't expect him, his administration, or Con-gress to do anything that benefits Americans as a whole.

Plus it's probably Joek making some of the calls. I swear the other day I answered the phone and an old dude yelled "YOU AIN'T BLACK, CORN POP!" and I said "No chit" and then I heard cackling in the background.

In case you forgot what you contributed to a thread that was about the dead making phone calls to the living, I quoted you here.

Honestly, I see no positive addition to the thread involved, but merely an opportunity to inject politics into the subject matter at hand.

I could be wrong, because of course I'm not aware of your intent.

Perhaps you were debunking? If so, then I guess that's cool.

Otherwise, the thread seem pretty decent overall, and yes I'm in it.
And hell, I may even try to make a call to the dead if i get the time because of it.

A little bit of thread drift always happens, sometimes it leads to parallel interesting discussions and learning moments.
Sometimes its blatant crap, and we have a pretty good moderation team for when that happens.

If you see something that they miss, hit the report button, i guarantee they will check it out and deal with it.

I didnt report yours, mostly because it didnt cause a problem, everyone just ignored you. And honestly, that works pretty damn good too.

But mostly what I'm saying, is that I find it hilarious that you're using that thread as a case in point to call for rather drastic measures to restrict member participation in threads by creating an "invite only" forum. Do you think that in that thread you contributed such quality content that you would be one of the elite few that would deserve to be included in such a thread?

Or were you setting an example of why certain members should be excluded from certain threads?

Ummm…it’s only my opinion naturally…still…I think that secret societies…members only clubs…and the ability to silence another…or place them under some lock and ignore them…is the refuge of the weak mind…a mind that takes itself entirely too seriously…while retreating into the shelter of a safe space…

Conflating clique with virtue is really only another means of signaling insecurity…

Attempting to throttle speech by applying response limits to thread conversations is a little too Dorsey-esque…and IMO…would only chill participation…and drive members away…

Why not…rather…realize that each thread has exactly the number of responder’s and responses…by choice…and not by stifling content…

Threads live…and die…because those who wish to express themselves…do…and those whose interests lie elsewhere…either lurk…or simply choose not to engage or enter the thread…

Nice. I'll try again. You both misunderstood, obviously.

So I'll type slowly and explain.

I'm asking the owner, not either of you, if there could be a forum...that is invite only....so that those of us that wish to create a thread....can invite members that may or may not share an interest....by doing so....it will hopefully keep the thread moving smoothly by keeping members out that do nothing but drive by commenting and at times goad others into going off topic. Yet let the thread still be visible so lurkers can still read and maybe become intrigued and join ATS and so uninvited members that would like to join in could request to join.

I hope that helps. Because I don't have my dancing shoes on...

And I provided an answer .
The ignore used to be there (IIRC)
Pulled due to abuse .
So , now , you are asking for a double opportunity at abuse ?

How can the option to ignore be abused?

Hell it worked perfectly when I would comment on TGP & BB, lots of spam bots there.

It's amazing. Comments can be removed but don't suggest the commentator be ignored by click'n a button.

It's all good, dug88 gave me great advice that I should have already known, just don't engage.

I was trying to make thread reading on ATS a little better and save me some time by not having to read shlt I shouldn't have to read, but I'll just start paying more attention to the names and just automatically skip any comment they make.

Come to think of it, that sounds like a better idea.

Abuse of the ignore button? What, too many got their feelz hurt and ran mommy mod and daddy mod?

I'd seriously like more detail on that one.

I'll admit I could have left out the two last paragraphs but why?

Four funking years and even now of the other side interjecting "but Orange Man".

But I do see your point and two wrongs do not make a right.

And I thank you for bringing that to my attention.

I'll try to leave unnecessary commentary out of future comments.

You are absolutely correct.

I'd be cool with an ATS chatroom, where various topics could be discussed and seen by lurkers. As long as there is an ignore feature.

And what happened to the that pretty little button anyway?

I'd love an ignore feature on users and an ignore feature on forums. I also want to read the thread about the dead making prank calls! Link?

I don't get how everyone keeps thinking I'm trying to be secret.

1. I said let lurkers be able to read the threads. Just like they're doing now already.

2. I said let ALL members be able to read the threads. Just like they're doing now already.

3. I said let uninvited members that wanted to contribute be able to do so by asking.

I'm trying to cut down on the BS. It's simple.

Let's say you want to create a thread about a topic you are serious about and have the thread free of pointless comments and witty snippy smartass remarks. Let there be ONE, JUST ONE FREAKING FORUM, where YOU the thread maker can prevent those people from even entering your thread - to comment.

I haven't said squat about making secret club threads.

I actually agree with you, all of you, when it comes to having "private secret handshake what's the password" threads.

I'm asking for one forum with threads that can be easily read.

If not, how about a forum where I can say what the funk I want to say to each of these funking members every time they do what they apparently only know how to do without Mod interference.

Hell, I like that forum idea better.

I'm pretty well on your side politically. I never said I disagreed with you lol.

But, we have the mud pit for all that glorious mess. I've no doubt you've been there.

I havent really offered my opinion other than pontificating as to your original thread subject, which I would admit is focused on the owner of ATS.

My thoughts on that, in my humble member opinion, is I would not like to see a further increase on an already somewhat present hierarchy of "prefered" posters being allowed to participate in discussions. I feel that would ultimately lead to a serious lack of involvement by the rest of us lackeys who are just trying to enjoy the site.

Take it as you may. It's my opinion.

Man, ok, that's what I wasn't picking up. I get that, I honestly do. And I see how it would turn into club for certain members.

I made a mountain out of a molehill I guess.

LOL. I do have an anxiety disorder, diagnosed by certified mental health staff. I got flustered and you were right, I attached an unnecessary comment in that same thread.

I do appreciate you bringing that to light.

Now....do I put A-1 or Lea & Perrin's on my crow.

I exaggerated a bit.

How do I link within ATS. I'm on a phone, still figuring out how to maneuver.

But it a recent thread made a few hours ago. About the dead calling people. It WAS an interesting thread until I got pissed and made this thread.

What can I say, other than I sweat the small stuff sometimes.

It's all good now though.

Well we can judge that individually I suppose.

The mods are reasonable but human.

I've had a thread yanked because of lack of content and then another member posts an op with even less content and they let it stand.

Still, within the guidelines they set there is a place for all and 99% of the time they do get it right.

If there was any deliberate, ongoing bias I wouldve felt it long ago.

If you present comment A, B or C that would be a starting point. Mostly you'll find that a mod acted within their rights.

The one thing we can all agree on is that they nurture this environment and for the most part they let the conversation flow uninterrupted.

This place is the last of it's kind and I do believe in some respects it is a labor of love.

We seem to forget that sometimes.

There is something special here.

Thirteen years I've lurked and joined, lurked and rejoined, lurked more and rejoined yet again.

I miss some of the members from a decade ago.

One passed away, he knew he was dying. It was gut wrenching reading comments to him by other members.

I remember Bobby Powell. I think that was his name. He looked stressed and sickly in an ATS vid....by the way, I'm on a phone, how do I get to the ATS vids or are they gone. I want to watch the first vid I watched on ATS again, since it's about to be the 20th anniversary for the content of that vid.
