I was wondering if we could have a forum that is invite only in which the thread creator creates a thread and invites the members he or she would like to converse with on various topics, and is still viewable by the uninvited and lurkers.

I was just in a thread about the dead making prank calls and it was hijacked.

I understand the Mod Squad does everything in their power to keep threads running smoothly and am by no means saying they are not able to keep up but I was thinking with an invite only forum it would help the Mods out by alleviating some of the babysitting they have to do because of members that signed up just so they can leave repetitive comments on threads they disagree with.

My view is if I read an OP that does not interest me or I disagree with I'll refrain from commenting. And if by chance I see a comment on such thread I may respond once or twice to that comment but I try not to carry on conversations in another member's thread.

Or at least limit the amount of times a member can respond in the thread.

Anything.

I've seen threads that had almost two or three pages removed by Mods because of political trolling or baiting and rudeness.

It's just a suggestion. I hope you understand where I'm coming from.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

EdisonintheFM

So you want ATS to have exhibitionist echo bubble chambers where approved only members get to partake in specific publicly conversations while the rest may only watch?

Why not start a chat room?

That's what it sounds like to me .

I'd be cool with an ATS chatroom, where various topics could be discussed and seen by lurkers. As long as there is an ignore feature.

And what happened to the that pretty little button anyway?

I'm not sure you quite get what I'm saying. There's a million and one options out there for private messaging groups. ATS is a public forum. If you want to have private discussions with select groups of members, set something up then pm those members to join you. Having a forum with publicly viewable, invite only threads just seems to go against what ATS is about.

ATS has had a few forums over the years with limited posting or viewing capabilities, but never at just the whims of the op.

That's basically what the mudpit is. Just a reacharound star and flag festival for the right.

Nice. I'll try again. You both misunderstood, obviously.

So I'll type slowly and explain.

I'm asking the owner, not either of you, if there could be a forum...that is invite only....so that those of us that wish to create a thread....can invite members that may or may not share an interest....by doing so....it will hopefully keep the thread moving smoothly by keeping members out that do nothing but drive by commenting and at times goad others into going off topic. Yet let the thread still be visible so lurkers can still read and maybe become intrigued and join ATS and so uninvited members that would like to join in could request to join.

I hope that helps. Because I don't have my dancing shoes on...

I don't want private discussions. I want to engage in member's threads and not read comment after comment that is just pointless naysaying and witty remarks.

You see how my supposed off topic comment was yanked?

There's no consistency in the babysitting. At least in threads I've been in anyway. And I don't bother reporting it, that seems just as ridiculous as the comment traffic jams that are irrelevant to the topic.

I know Mods have a handful. I was trying to help them as well as help the site with a reasonable suggestion.

And I do understand what you are saying. Once again thanks for the discord link. I'll check it out.

And the Left's drive by target practicing.

I've been on ATS since 2008.

When "pics or it didn't happen" was the bullet of choice.

No stranger to ATS or the Mod Squad.

I do get your point. I've seen plenty of interesting threads totally derailed by a few posters. The only thing I can attribute to it is these quotes i've sent to a couple other people who've questioned this. I can't post the source because...rules, but...

Technique #1 - 'FORUM SLIDING'
If a very sensitive posting of a critical nature has been posted on a forum - it can be
quickly removed from public view by 'forum sliding.' In this technique a number of
unrelated posts are quietly prepositioned on the forum and allowed to 'age.' Each of
these misdirectional forum postings can then be called upon at will to trigger a 'forum
slide.' The second requirement is that several fake accounts exist, which can be called
upon, to ensure that this technique is not exposed to the public. To trigger a 'forum
slide' and 'flush' the critical post out of public view it is simply a matter of logging into
each account both real and fake and then 'replying' to prepositined postings with a
simple 1 or 2 line comment. This brings the unrelated postings to the top of the forum
list, and the critical posting 'slides' down the front page, and quickly out of public view.
Although it is difficult or impossible to censor the posting it is now lost in a sea of
unrelated and unuseful postings. By this means it becomes effective to keep the
readers of the forum reading unrelated and non-issue items.

A second highly effective technique (which you can see in operation all the time at www.abovetopsecret.com) is 'consensus cracking.' To develop a consensus crack, the following technique is used. Under the guise of a fake account a posting is made which looks legitimate and is towards the truth is made - but the critical point is that it has a VERY WEAK PREMISE without substantive proof to back the posting. Once this is done then under alternative fake accounts a very strong position in your favour is slowly introduced over the life of the posting. It is IMPERATIVE that both sides are initially presented, so the uninformed reader cannot determine which side is the truth. As postings and replies are made the stronger 'evidence' or disinformation in your favour is slowly 'seeded in.' Thus the uninformed reader will most like develop the same position as you, and if their position is against you their opposition to your posting will be most likely dropped. However in some cases where the forum members are highly educated and can counter your disinformation with real facts and linked postings, you can then 'abort' the consensus cracking by initiating a 'forum slide.

Reasons why certain dedicated posters may derail threads.

Also, you're welcome for the link.

And due to you trying to derail the thread your pissed off and want invite only threads?

Actually, there's no need.

A return to Ignore Lists, however, would solve a hell of a lot of problems. And if people think it's excessive and unnecessary, I might have to converse with mods about a deliberate troll experiment to prove a point.

Holy crap. Ok, I had no idea or even considered thread topics could be bumped up like that.

I guess I've always thought ATS did not have shenanigans like that going on.

Overall I 100% love this site and its structure and content, and for the most part the community.

I was freaking out a few months ago when it seemed ATS was going to end. I know I can't prove this to you but for a year I've only been on ATS, Gateway Pundit, and Breitbart. Once I was able to join again at ATS I left those two. I don't do social media platforms and try to avoid utoob unless there's a vid on here to watch.

Anyway, I appreciate and am grateful for your time and help.

There's definitely some trolls here.

And at times I wonder why they seem to be invisible because I have no problem seeing it, and I guess really I'm just being a little bitch but I'm not crying about it, I just had an idea after leaving a thread earlier because I kept seeing the same username leaving comments and one other member even asked why they're in that thread if they didn't agree with the OP.

Anyway, I made a suggestion, dug88 helped me out. I can unclinch my dime piece now.

But yeah, I like your idea.

I've been getting those calls for months. I said what it was and stated a fact : past two Presidents were going to fix that issue.

You obviously were in the thread. Did you not notice what I was referring to regarding the pointless comments?

I don't see how my comment thread drifted or was off topic but if YOU do then when you have a moment please let me know. Thanks.
