I grieve for the next generation if everyone is crying about cops making suspected rioters kneel on the floor so they don't do a runner.
I wouldn't have kneeled though, I'd have sat on my arse because there is no law forcing me to kneel for anyone. I wouldn't kneel for the queen let alone some angry cop.
...and yes I'd expect the baton as well, but hitting me will not get me into a kneeling position, more likely laying down with my hands trying to protect my head.

Cops still have to do their job. Protesting is not a safe activity. This was the expected "best" way for the public peace and their protest to coexist.
