I think it's an incredibly complicated topic that's impossible to be right about.

Sure. Never teach your kids to dream, imagine, experience wonder and magic.

When did I imply that?

UH, the topic of the thread?

I'm not going to lie to them.

Wanna bet?

It's so cute to see single people make promises about being a parent.

Luckily my girlfriend feels the same about Santa. We've already agreed to not lie to our kids if we have any.

Right on.

When you do and they turn 3 or 4, lets revisit this topic.

Bogeyman = punishment

Santa = positive/negative reinforcement

Reinforcement of either sort is more effective than punishment in the long term.

Even if I were single, what does it matter? Maybe you're just a lonely bitter old man. Since we're assuming things about each other and all.

Which is why I choose to be the harbinger of that reinforcement and take the responsibility on myself and not pass it on to a fictional character.

Yeah.

But the that's the whole point of negative reinforcement. It's attached only to the behavior. Not the parent. Not Santa.

The rewards are most definitely connected to the action otherwise there would be no threat of not getting presents under the tree. It reinforces materialism, absolutely it does.

So you'll teach your child altruism at the age of 3?
