I dunno, taking a selfie only takes a second. It hasn't made my life sad. But I don't have a Facebook, so, I am not really documenting my life. But when I happen to be texting or chatting with a lady and she wants to see a selfie, she gets a selfie of me. So, but I'm not very photogenic, it's strange, but, theres something about my crooked broken nose, hairy moles and missing teeth (or it Could be my yellowed smokers teeth) that makes me so I'm not very photogenic for some reason... hmmm... yeah I don't know I guess it's just one of those mysteries! So I take five or ten and select the least hideous one or two.

He was the only person not looking at his phone, it was pretty hard to not notice.

I'm sure. My vacation doesn't consist of taking inventory of other people's actions.

Same! Sometimes it takes more than 10 to get one NOT completely hideous LOL
Although I DO have a facebook acct but the profile pic isn't me, it's my dog cheesing for the camera!
As for the OP, I think some folks just do whatever they enjoy and we're all different. When I'm on vacation (been forever ago!) I don't prefer to have standing plans. I just like to let the day carry me along so I am sure to some, my vacations would seem boring.

I don't care what other people do or when they do it as long as it's not hurting me. If they want to dick around on their phone who the hell is it any of my business.

Well I was plenty pissed when the guy next to me at an Alice Cooper concert taped and posted through the whole damn thing.
Concert manners have gone straight to hell. I was so disgusted by the clowns behind me at a Hackett show that I swore off concerts. But there is that Marillion Weekend coming up next year...hmmm...
I get the OP's complaint though, but it isn't new. How many people have always viewed their vacations through a lens? Still cameras, video cameras, vacation slide shows afterwards? We carry cameras, but make sure to enjoy the moment!

So I was on spring break in a spring break town. I has been about six or seven years since I had visited. Nobody knows how to relax anymore! In just that short time a lot has changed.
There was one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and all these people were just taking selfies and browsing nonstop. Isn't vacation to get away from it all and enjoy the scenery? I could not believe the amount of people walking while taking selfies. It seemed surreal as if I was in the twilight zone. I sat there on beautiful white powdery sand and watched. Many people only went into the water to take posed selfies and jumped right back out. I made dinner reservation. I received a confirmation on my cell phone, now here is the disturbing part, I then received another cell phone message basically asking if I was really coming. This was a common scenario not just with the restaurant, text after text after text. So I get to the restaurant and there are so many people not talking to each other but instead looking at their cell phones or taking photos of their food. I know this is the popular thing to do right now, but I think people are truly missing out on real experiences. Maybe this is why everyone is unhappy and stressed out all the time. They are too connected never letting go. It is very easy for me to do because I grew up without technology. I think I should open a vacation spot and not allow devices of any kind, only a rotary phone in the lobby and that's it! No computers and of course no cell phones!

Spring break is not a real vacation.

...

Tech gives us instant grat.

I'm guilty of it, starting on the plane or sooner.

Pics or it didn't happen, lol.

...

(shudder!)

Ummmm, that just sounds, well,...wrong!

Crowds are part of the experience sometimes.

Used to go to concerts, ball games and movies, a lot.

Parties anywhere, on hill tops, on the beach, bars, pool halls.

Grew older, I guess.

I don't really associate party scenes with vacations, maybe a destination trip for a few days, but a vacation is something different in my mind. Not all recreational trips are vacations.

Fortunately, people can do whatever they want with their extended time off, provided they can afford it which is another matter.

People don't enjoy their time off like you do and suddenly that means they don't know how to vacation? That sounds rather arrogant to me. Who made you the official arbiter of how people have to spend their vacations having fun and enjoying themselves?

The difference in your mind is the cost... the more you spend , the longer you are 'off' the more like a vacation it is?

I will admit to making a short exception to my no selfie rule, when me and the missus were living in Europe we took at least 1 selfie where ever we went on vacation so my mom could see us and where we were up till she passed away, then we stopped with the selfies.

If you are taking them so friends or family members that will never be at that location, I think a selfie has merit it can give the illusion of being there with you.

The take a selfie every 10 steps crowd though... they make me grind my teeth with the selfie sticks.

Panama City Beach Spring break:

Clearwater Spring Break:

I think people who just graduated high school go to Panama City, so they really are, um, impaired. Ya know, away from Mama and all that.
The other places seem to get college kids, so it's a bit different, maybe? I don't know. I haven't been to either in a decade or so, and have no desire to go. I like more exotic, and less drunken places now, although I did my time. hehe

It's a difference of location and what the different cities allow. PCB when that video was taken allowed drinking on the beach. It was crazy and has been crazy for the past few decades. The city council has now outlawed alcohol on the beach during Spring Break and the problems have calmed themselves a little. I think arrests were down this year and bed tax revenue was up so that's a good thing. Still a long way to get before PCB is as docile as Clearwater Beach. The two at this point and in the past have been no comparison.

I still love them both but for reasons that have nothing to do with Spring Break.

That's not it. There can be inexpensive vacations such as going camping. Going to something like a spring break party or Burning Man I don't really associate with being a vacation though. I think a lot of it has to do with the duration.

I enjoyed my time 'off' without having to go anywhere. Depends on what you settle for. If I had a lot of money I guess I would waste it running round the globe too.
