So why isn't there a big quake every time there is an Earth directed solar flare?
I did a study of the data over the last couple of years going back 10 years, there is no correlation at all.
The 2011 match was just coincidence.

I don't think that the flares are the sole cause. I think it's mostly dependent on the stress build up on a fault line that hasn't been relieved in hundreds of years. Then you get lunar perigee and the new moon occurring on the same day, then add an earth directed solar flare on a overdue fault line.

I think you could have hundreds of earth directed flares and not have an earthquake as long as the fault has relieved its stress, gradually.

Probably a lot of other factors other than lunar gravitation and solar energy.

Bit of a ruckus on Sunday night around Cook Strait, a couple of M4's within half an hour.
I didn't feel them here, had already gone to sleep.
The 2nd one was in the middle of Cook Strait, a lot closer to Wellington than the ones that have been spilling over from the Culverden-Kaikoura 7.8 aftershock series.

The activity at the Philippines seems to have moved to the east, to the Trench?

I thought for sure, that a fair sized quake was in the works last night, when I saw Chile, New Guinea & Japan all on the list again. But it didn't pan out. That's the second time nothing happened. It was a good coincidence/theory while it lasted!

Nooooooo!!! Say it tain't sooo!!! It's still the best forum on the net! Not quite what it used to be, but what is?

I went back & looked at the last page, I missed most of that! Four or five bleeps altogether!
I'm always a day late & a dollar short! Doggone it!
I remember when you took over QW after PuterMan & they closed your new thread. I got bleeped like three times for 'expressing my displeasure'! Ha, ha! Then I believe I got a PM with a warning, if I remember correctly! I was fuming for hours! But then when I calmed down a little & I thought about it...Pfffft! I wouldn't have done it any differently! So it was worth it. My first bleeps! I felt like a rebel!

So have one on me... Here's to righteous indignation!!! Please reconsider! We appreciate & need your expertise!!!

This is the best earthquake forum on the internet.

And it's because of folks like Muzzy and Puterman and too many others to mention, who are not only willing to share, but also have the patience to teach.

Including YOU.

I got a question. Should any of these big bombs or missle strikes show up on seismic monitors or are they too weak. If they do show up I would assume you could tell by the depth. I thought aboit this before this recent MOAB bomb dropped in Afghanistan, I would have though that bomb might be big enough to pop up on seismic stations.

Thanks

I'm hoping that the issue will be resolved through conversation and that you remain, Muzzy. I have appreciated your (and others far more knowledgeable than myself) input and hope to see you posting again.

I answered that and the connection got reset! Yes if the blast is close enough or big enough it will show but it can be easily discounted as an earthquake as the signatures are different. This is how they police the Test Ban Treaty,

So those monitoring the stations can quickly identify an explosion vs a true earthquake and filter what gets posted?

Then I am assuming the explosions from fracking get posted because their signature is more similar an EQ?

Sorry to be so dense. Feel free to direct me to links.

Sadly since it sounds like we might see more bombings and such I figured it might help to notice the difference between the two when looking at EQ activity.

Thanks again.

I was checking the USGS for just the same thing.
When North Korea has a nuclear test it shows up on the USGS,
so I would think a MOAB would too,
but perhaps they chose not to display the little diamond that shows explosion vs EQ.
